      Review & Installation Video

I'm Ryan from, and this is my review of the Rugged Ridge Fuel Cover fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs. This cover is available in both black and a chrome style finish, in aluminum or stainless steel, and in a locking and non-locking version. So whatever you need for your Jeep, we have you covered. The fuel filler cap on our JKs is left exposed which can give it a little bit more of that rugged Jeep look and also follows in line with its ancestry, but if you're one of those people who thinks that looks a little bit unfinished, a fuel cover is a really nice option. While this is mostly a visual modification you can get a locking version of this which will add some function if you have concerns about people getting into your fuel tank.I like this fuel cover in particular because they do offer different materials, finishes, and functions, and they do it all at a really fair price. Once you decide to go with a Rugged Ridge Fuel Cover you will have a couple of decisions to make. As I mentioned they offer this in both stainless steel and aluminum. Now a low grade stainless will rust if it's exposed to the elements, and aluminum will oxidize if it's exposed to the elements. So to be honest I don't see a huge benefit of purchasing one over the other, and the prices are only marginally different. So you choose which ever one you like. After you choose the material you will choose the finish. I prefer the gloss black, but there's also a chrome style version available. Being honest I would like to see Rugged Ridge offer this in a textured black powder coat finish because I think it matches a lot of the black plastic accents on the Jeep a little bit better than the gloss version does. Finally you'll decide if you want the locking or non-locking version of the cover. The locking version offers some added security that a lot of people like while others find it inconvenient to need a key every time you fill up your Jeep.If you decide to go with the non-locking version you'll have a magnetic clasp to make sure that the door stays closed when it should, and all the versions feature a rivet pattern around the outside which gives the door a little bit of style. Getting these fuel doors installed on your Jeep is a really simple process. All you need to do is hold the fuel door up over the factory fuel cap and make sure that it's level. Once you have it leveled and positioned where you like you can mark the four holes, and drill four small pilot holes into the plastic bezel around the fuel filler. After that all you need to do is install the four screws that are included in the kit and you're done. The whole process shouldn't take you more than half an hour and all you'll need is a drill, a drill bit, and a screw driver. Now even though this is mostly a visual modification unless of course you get the locking version, and you have that additional function, I do think that these are fairly priced. They drastically change the look of the Jeep and you're able to get a lot of different options, and really customize what you want for your vehicle when you go with the Rugged Ridge version of the fuel cover. They're a lot of other versions out there that are right around the same price that may or may not give you quite as many options. It's important to note that the factory Mopar version of the fuel door cover is available for only a few dollars more. So it comes down to what you want for your Jeep.So if you're one of those people who doesn't like the look of the exposed fuel cap on the side of your JK, and you want something that's gonna finish off the look. But you also want options for finish, material, and locking versus non-locking I think the Rugged Ridge Fuel Cover is the way to go. They offer all of that at what I think is a pretty fair price. So that's my review of the Rugged Ridge Fuel Cover fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs that you can find right here at

1 2018 Wrangler - MSH Installation Time: Less than 1 Hour

        Lock Stuck :(

The locking fuel door looked great however it was very hard to open. It ended up breaking after a few months. Since it had to be installed it makes it more difficult to replace.

        Goodbye missing gas!

We had gas missing all the time. Not much about 2-3 gallons per week. We decided to upgrade and put a locking door on. Getting great gas mileage now.

        Overpriced for the quality

I purchased this about six months ago. Within a month I could barely get the key into the lock, it jams up. I quit locking it because there are magnets inside. Now the magnets have came undone, so the cover will not stay shut, and the lock doesn’t work at this point. It looks great, but definitely isn’t worth the money.

        2 2011 Wrangler - Mike

        Inferior Lock

The lock doesn't work well in cold temperatures and the attached magnets rusted off after one winter. After trying to unfreeze the lock to get the key smoothly in by any means necessary, I had to bust the lock with a tire iron in order to fuel up. For the price, this absolutely should not have happened. Take your money elsewhere.

        Low quality lock

I love the look of this but the key doesn't slide into the lock very well. You have to really push hard and jam the key in. I'm sure the lock is going to be toast before long with this kind of wear and tear. Wish I'd gotten a different fuel cover.

4 2007 Wrangler - Matzke Installation Time: Less than 1 Hour

        Great, easy install

This locking gas door is very easy, short install and provides the needed amount of protection most people feel is necessary. Install took 5 minutes or less. I recommend taping the gas door onto your Jeep with masking tape to ensure it stays lined up. Four little screws to drill into the stock one. It is gloss black, although I will most likely take it off my Jeep and paint it matte black at some point. I do worry that it is perhaps easy to break into if you had something to pry it off. You just need to slip something under the metal frame of the door and pry. With just four little screws I assume it wouldn't take much. Overall I am very please with it.

        Locking gas cap review

The key mechanism for the lock isn't as smooth as it should be, however overall it's not bad.

4 2013 Wrangler - Samntha Installation Time: Less than 1 Hour

        Locking gas cover

Holds up pretty well. I'm pleased with it. Took me less than 10 minutes to install. I didn't predrill holes or anything, just lined it up where I wanted it, took my drill and screwed it in. It's an awkward angle for the drill on the top right corner.
