    Review & Installation Video

    Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com, and this is my review of the Rugged Ridge Fuel Cover fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs. This cover is available in both black and a chrome style finish, in aluminum or stainless steel, and in a locking and non-locking version. So whatever you need for your Jeep, we have you covered. The fuel filler cap on our JKs is left exposed which can give it a little bit more of that rugged Jeep look and also follows in line with its ancestry, but if you're one of those people who thinks that looks a little bit unfinished, a fuel cover is a really nice option. While this is mostly a visual modification you can get a locking version of this which will add some function if you have concerns about people getting into your fuel tank. I like this fuel cover in particular because they do offer different materials, finishes, and functions, and they do it all at a really fair price. Once you decide to go with a Rugged Ridge Fuel Cover you will have a couple of decisions to make. As I mentioned they offer this in both stainless steel and aluminum. Now a low grade stainless will rust if it's exposed to the elements, and aluminum will oxidize if it's exposed to the elements. So to be honest I don't see a huge benefit of purchasing one over the other, and the prices are only marginally different. So you choose which ever one you like. After you choose the material you will choose the finish. I prefer the gloss black, but there's also a chrome style version available. Being honest I would like to see Rugged Ridge offer this in a textured black powder coat finish because I think it matches a lot of the black plastic accents on the Jeep a little bit better than the gloss version does. Finally you'll decide if you want the locking or non-locking version of the cover. The locking version offers some added security that a lot of people like while others find it inconvenient to need a key every time you fill up your Jeep. If you decide to go with the non-locking version you'll have a magnetic clasp to make sure that the door stays closed when it should, and all the versions feature a rivet pattern around the outside which gives the door a little bit of style. Getting these fuel doors installed on your Jeep is a really simple process. All you need to do is hold the fuel door up over the factory fuel cap and make sure that it's level. Once you have it leveled and positioned where you like you can mark the four holes, and drill four small pilot holes into the plastic bezel around the fuel filler. After that all you need to do is install the four screws that are included in the kit and you're done. The whole process shouldn't take you more than half an hour and all you'll need is a drill, a drill bit, and a screw driver. Now even though this is mostly a visual modification unless of course you get the locking version, and you have that additional function, I do think that these are fairly priced. They drastically change the look of the Jeep and you're able to get a lot of different options, and really customize what you want for your vehicle when you go with the Rugged Ridge version of the fuel cover. They're a lot of other versions out there that are right around the same price that may or may not give you quite as many options. It's important to note that the factory Mopar version of the fuel door cover is available for only a few dollars more. So it comes down to what you want for your Jeep. So if you're one of those people who doesn't like the look of the exposed fuel cap on the side of your JK, and you want something that's gonna finish off the look. But you also want options for finish, material, and locking versus non-locking I think the Rugged Ridge Fuel Cover is the way to go. They offer all of that at what I think is a pretty fair price. So that's my review of the Rugged Ridge Fuel Cover fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.

Specs. Crisp-looking and ruggedly elegant, this Black Stainless Steel Locking Fuel Cover mounts over the stock plastic insert to isolate your gas behind a locking steel hatch. With the two keys included, you can keep people from siphoning your gas and make your JK Unlimited look even better, too.

Construction. Rugged Ridge's locking fuel cover is a round hatch made from sturdy, rust-proof stainless steel. Corrosion is further shielded against by the semi-gloss black powder-coated finish on the piece, which also improves the hatch's looks. Installation is medium-easy, with some drilling of the existing plastic insert in order to attach the included self-tapping screws. A 5 year limited warranty is included.

Application. Fits 2007-2018 JK Wranglers, 2-door and 4-door models. Some drilling required.

      Great, easy install

This locking gas door is very easy, short install and provides the needed amount of protection most people feel is necessary. Install took 5 minutes or less. I recommend taping the gas door onto your Jeep with masking tape to ensure it stays lined up. Four little screws to drill into the stock one. It is gloss black, although I will most likely take it off my Jeep and paint it matte black at some point. I do worry that it is perhaps easy to break into if you had something to pry it off. You just need to slip something under the metal frame of the door and pry. With just four little screws I assume it wouldn't take much. Overall I am very please with it.

      Locking gas cap review

The key mechanism for the lock isn't as smooth as it should be, however overall it's not bad.

      Locking gas cover

Holds up pretty well. I'm pleased with it. Took me less than 10 minutes to install. I didn't predrill holes or anything, just lined it up where I wanted it, took my drill and screwed it in. It's an awkward angle for the drill on the top right corner.

      EASY TO INSTALL

Good looking, easy to install, BUT having trouble with getting the key into and operating the lock when I stop for gas. Takes time at the pump to open the lock.

      Locking Fuel Cover

The product arrived and was exactly as described on the web site. It took less than 10 minutes to install and needing no drilling. The lock works great and looks great on the Jeep.

      Looks good but..

This was super easy to install and looks great, my ony complaint however is the lock portion has already corroded and I've only had it installed for about 2 weeks. Granted I live at the beach, but still. I'd recommend the same one without the lock.

      Great Looking Assessory!

Mounting can be a little tricky, if you're doing it alone. Trying to hold it steady and keep it lined up for markings.

      Locking fuel cover

The reason I don't recommend is the cheep lock on the door. Leaving unlocked be cause of this.Basically it appears the dust cover preventing dust and moisturizer out of lock sticks at an angle preventing the key from being inserted. Appearance and install very easy.

This product not only looks great, but will provide security for the fuel.

Looks good and installs very easily. No special tools and clean project. I feel it adds to the appearance of the Jeep. Much cheaper than a MOPAR part.

      Lockable Fuel Cover

This lockable cover was an easy install with a little elbow grease it took less then an hour. I did add some doubled sided mounting tape to hold the cover in place while I secured the screws. I like the look that my Wrangler has with the fuel cover. I plan on adding some lock lube since the key seems a little tight when I insert it. I did not have to do any drilling to install the cover I just used a little force to screw in these self-taping screws and it worked fine.

      Helps with Gas Thieves

The Locking Fuel Cover will not keep all thieves out if they are really determined, but will keep most out because of the extra effort it will take. It only took 30 minutes to install and works very well. It also looks great.

      Great item but not secure

I got this mostly as a deterrent against gas theft but if someone really wanted to they could easily take it off. I also got this product to keep mud out of the gas area while I'm mudding. It works great for that and the install was quick. Took about 2 min.

      Poor Lock Quality

It looks great, but the lock was tight and the key was very malleable, resulting in a broken key in the first week. For the price, the lock mechanism quality was very cheap.
