    Review & Installation Video

    Review & Install Video

Jeeps have had exposed fuel filler caps for quite some time now, but a lot of you are looking to finish off the look of your Jeep a little bit, also customize it a bit, so going with a fuel door like this one is going to accomplish that. Today we're gonna talk through the installation of this fuel door which is a very simple one out of three wrench install that shouldn't take you more than a half hour to complete. And unlike some other fuel door installations, this does not require any type of drilling, so this is completely reversible without leaving any holes in your Jeep, but we'll talk more about the install in a moment. This is going to be very well built, it's going to be higher quality materials, it's going to have a lot more fit and finish, as I said before, it's going to install a little bit differently, however it is also going to be a little bit more expensive. So if you are looking for a premium product and you're okay paying that premium price, this is gonna be a great option for you. However if you are looking for something a little bit less expensive, you don't need or want anything quite as fancy, you can go with Rugged Ridge's more basic line of fuel doors or one of the other brands that's out there as well.So like I said, this is the Elite Series, and this is going to be built of a higher grade material than the more basic Rugged Ridge stuff. This is going to be a cast aluminum piece. Now, of course most of it's cast aluminum, the front section, everything that you see, the door itself and the door surround is going to be that cast aluminum. The rear section is still plastic, but that's okay, that's just like the factory piece is. Now a couple things that I like about this. This has a completely hidden hinge, even when you open up the door, you really don't see the hinge, and that's just part of that fit and finish that I'm talking about with the Elite Series. The other thing that you get with this fuel door that you don't have with some of the other ones is a push to open. The push to open, this pops out, you can very easily open it, push to close. Some of the other ones don't have that feature, they'll just have a magnetic clasp and an area that you can kinda get your finger behind to pry it open and then push it closed again. Again, they're also going to have that exposed spring, so just a little bit less fit and finish. This thing is much better built than those other ones. Again, this is also going to be aluminum. So if you were to ever get a scratch or anything in this, it's not going to rust like mild steel will, this is going to hold up a lot better. You might just get a little bit of oxidation with the aluminum, but again, no rust. This is also going to install a little bit differently. This is going to take the place of that factory fuel filler surround instead of just drilling into it and going over top of it. So again, a little bit different there as well.So getting this installed is going to be a very simple one out of three wrench installation that shouldn't take you more than a half hour to complete. Like I said before, the more basic series of Rugged Ridge and a lot of other fuel doors on the market do require drilling into that plastic surround, this one does not. So the first step in this installation is going to be removing your driver's side taillight, and you need to do that to be able to get behind that fuel filler surround to be able to remove it. Once you have the taillight out of the way, go ahead and remove the fuel filler cap completely from the Jeep, reach behind, push in the plastic clips to remove that surround completely, then it's just a matter of setting this in place, giving it a push, and it'll clip down in position. You can replace your fuel filler cap and finally bolt your taillight back into place after you reconnect the wires. This is a very simple process, there's no drilling, and that makes it completely reversible. Now because this is a higher grade of materials and it does have a lot more fit and finish than the other versions of Rugged Ridge fuel doors and some other ones on the market, this is more expensive. This is gonna run you around $85 versus some of the others that are closer to $50, $55. In my opinion, for the additional $30, I think this is worth the additional money. I do think that you're getting that much more value out of this elite version versus the more basic versions. However it comes down to what you want on your Jeep. If you just want something simple, you wanna save some money, that option's out there. If you want something a little more premium, you have this choice. So if you're looking to add a fuel door to your JK, you wanna make the side of the Jeep look a little bit more finished, add a little bit of fit and finish, and you want a premium product versus something that's a little bit more basic, as long as you're willing to pay the additional money, I do think this is a good option. So that's my review of the Rugged Ridge Elite Non-Locking Fuel Door, fitting your 2007 and up JK, that you can find right here at

This product looks great and is easy to install. Total installation took approximately 5 mins. Product fit perfectly, even with my over-sized fender flares.

No longer shuts and entire assembly rotates

As others have pointed out, after time, the door doesn't close properly. The clips that swinging part connect to are flimsy and don't hold the door anymore (after about a year). Thus, I have driven around with it open (no choice) - and sometimes it works again if I pinch the receiver part in a bit. Also the entire assembly is not tight - it can rotate a bit.

            Doesn't fit properly

doesn't fit properly has a design flaw in the fact that the upper clips are bigger, making the clip plastic more flimsy than the lower shorter ones. The upper clips wouldn't set properly.

            Fuel Door

Overall this is a really good product. There was a slight indentation on the side and two of the connection points were a little difficult to secure. Other than that it looks good and works great.

2 2017 Rubicon - Ron Installation Time: Less than 1 Hour

I have had it for just over a year. Though it looks good, the fit is poor and continues to rotate. It will not set secure to the tub. The gas cap door was initially difficult to snap shut or release to open. After a few months, it simply will quit working all together. The door has a cheap latch mechanism that continuously fails. I have to wedge a small piece of wood in the door to get it to stay closed. A total wast of money. Do yourself a favor, and spend a few more dollars and get the Jeep cover. This one is Awful. Review Program won't let me say what I really think of it.

            Fits Perfect and Looks Great!

This is definitely a cheap little upgrade for your Jrep. It's a quality piece and don't be fooled by the cheaper ones out there. This is a bit more expensive but for the fit and quality it's worth it. It's extremely easy to install and only took about 15 minunets to install.

Looks great but two of the clips will not engage no matter what I tried. The cheap plastic locking mechanism failed the first day. Currently trying to figure out what to replace it with.

            Poor locking clasp

We have brutal winters in Chicago, with that said, the plastic snap-in locking mechanism stayed gaping open once it got cold and no longer secures the fuel door. I took a small folded piece of my gas receipt and wedged it, to make the door stay closed. I'll replace it in the summer.

While this looked nice and comes with some promise given the price and manufacture, I was met with a bad experience. Cover doesn't actually fit snugly in, you can spin the whole housing once its clipped in place to the body panel. Material was great except for the cheap plastic clip you click the cover in and out of to open the flap. Broke on me after my third time of filling up my jeep. No Bueno.
