Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

Hi, I'm Dave from extremeterrain.com, and this is my review and installation video for the Rugged Ridge Door Hinge Covers for 2007 and up JKs. You can choose between a set of four or 2-door and color choices are available on our website, whether it is powder-coated black steel or stainless steel. I also give these a one out of three wrenches on our difficulty to install meter, because you're just gonna need some simple hand tools. It'll probably take less than 10, 15 minutes or so to get the job done, and in fact, we'll show you how to do that coming up in just a minute. If you've had your Wrangler for any length of time and especially if you've ever taken the doors off, and ridden around without them on, you know one of the biggest things and it happened to me years ago, and I hate what it looks like on my Jeep. And that is the door hinges wearing out and the paint flaking right off of them. It exposes the metal. It makes them susceptible to rust. These door hinge covers are going to cover up that unsightly place. Now, when you pop these on it's gonna be really easy to do so. It's gonna add a nice beefy look to your Jeep, it is going to cover or mask the problem, it's not going to solve it. So, I would highly recommend that you take care to treat whatever issues that may have been created from paint flaking off, from the hinges being open and closed, or the doors being taken off and put back on over time. These door hinges are made out of cast steel, and we're looking at the black powder-coated version, don't forget we do have stainless steel available as well. But that means it's a solid piece of metal. In fact, you'll see when you get these home. They're quite hefty. Again, these are going to cover up any of the trouble areas over your hinge. It's gonna make your Jeep have a much beefier look, that's one of the best descriptions I can come up with. At the same time it's gonna cover up any of those unsightly areas that may have been caused from opening and closing the door over time and the paint flaking off of the hinge. But at the same time, it's gonna be very nice that the back of it is not going to inhibit any sort of door removal for the future as well. It covers, but it doesn't obstruct. As I mentioned at the beginning of the video, I give this a one out of three wrenches on our difficulty rating meter to install, because it is gonna take some simple hand tools, but it shouldn't take you longer than 15 minutes or so to get the job done. Here's how it's done. You're gonna go over to the door hinges, and you're basically going to remove the bolts that are installed on your factory door. I want to let you know to help eliminate some of the flaking that could be caused because of factory paint. You may wanna take a sharp knife, a utility knife and score around the head of the screw, the preexisting screw that's in place on your original equipment. That will hopefully eliminate any sort of flaking that could occur across the rest of the door when you take the screw out. Then, you're going to put your door hinge right in place over it, and we do have some included bolts that come with the Rugged Ridge package, or you can reuse the factory ones if you choose to. But either way, you just install them right back on the inside where the predrilled holes are. Again, if you got a set of 2-door or just 4-door, you're gonna do this on every single one of the doors, two hinges per door, obviously. So, as far as these being made out of cast steel, you're gonna find that the price on these could be in the middle to the higher range when it comes to serving their purpose, which is basically to cover up unsightly areas. This does not fix or resolve any issue that you may have when it comes to rusting on your door hinge or paint flaking which is such a common problem to us Wrangler owners. But, this is gonna cover it up, it is made of cast steel so it has that beefy look and you probably feel pretty good about putting these on your rig. You're the one who's just gonna have to decide if it's cast steel is right for you and the price that comes along with it, or are there some more budget friendly options out there. Like plastic or other cover-ups made of aluminum or other materials. So, these hinges from Rugged Ridge certainly solve a problem of being able to cover up those unsightly areas. If you're like me and you hate the fact that wear and tear over time has caused paint flaking, chipping and maybe even some rust on your Wrangler because of taking doors off or putting them on or really just an older Jeep. It just happens. The big thing that you wanna do as a reminder is to treat that area if it is damaged. These cover-ups create a nice big bold look, but they don't solve any of the problems. And if there is rust or anything like that underneath, it's just going to continue on. Again, if you like the idea of covering up that unsightly area and yet still having access to taking your doors off or on, this may be a good solution for you. I'm Dave, and that was my review and installation video for the Rugged Ridge Door Hinge Covers in powder-coated black, is what we were seeing here. We do have them available in stainless steel, and you can pick up a set in two or 4-door arrays and of course, they're gonna be designed for JKs 2007 and up, and you can check them all out on our website at extremeterrain.com.

The intro instruction video shows removing bolts and lifting off the door hinge...why is it necessary to lift off the hinge ? Can't the covers just be screwed on over the hinges without lifting them off ?

  • Removing the doors is not necessary when installing the Rugged Ridge Black Door Hinge Cover Kit, however you will need to support the rear of the door to maintain proper door alignment, and avoid damage to the paint and body.

Easier said than done, but worth it!

When removing the original bolts, first take a knike and score around the heads. They have been painted and clear coated on the Jeep during manufacturing and are very difficult to break loose. By doing this it can save you from possibly stripping the head. The fit of the hinge covers varied from a good flush fit on most of them, but a few had a space between the cover and the door. This was dissappointing to me as I'm a perfectionist. That being said I was happy with the end result,it gave my Jeep it's own personality. It was alittle more work than anticipated but in my opinion well worth it.I will send a picture.

Looks great, install is a little tricky

The rugged ridge door hinge kit looks great once installed. A Jeeps door hinges usually are the first part of the Jeep to show wear, rust, etc..Thus, the door Hinge kit covers up such blemishes and add character and asthetic appeal that will turn heads and get you compliments. With respect to installation. Make sure to score the bolts, which are painted and clear coated, and be sure to use a wrench which will give you sufficient leverage to brake the OEM bolts free. Furthermore, like the instructions inform you to do, keep the doors closed during installation.

    great look and easy install

Well almost an easy install..had the worst factory hinge not been corroded and stripped out. The others went on easy and look so much better than the factory hinges.. I wish I would have found them much sooner. be sure to use a T50 star bit, if it rounds out you will have to drill out the factory hinge and that is not fun! I repeat do not strip the factory bolt!

    Nice beefy look

These hinges covers from rugged ridge provide a awesome look. I did all 4 doors and the hood. The quality is awesome the are beefy steel hinge covers that are easy to bolt on all took about an hour. Gives the jeep a beefy look. The protection will be fine also seems to give the door a little more stability and better latch when closed.
