Review & Install Video
I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com and this is my review and installation of the Rugged Ridge XHD Front Bumper Kit with High Clearance Bumper Ends, fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs. Today, I'm gonna tell you about the construction, the installation, and some of the features of this bumper.
A kit like this is for those of you who can't find an off-the-shelf bumper that has all of the features, the looks, and the budget that you're looking for and want something that you can purchase and then customize down the line. A bumper like this will grow with your build because it's a bumper base with some accessories, and you can change out those accessories pretty easily and pretty inexpensively. Although right in the beginning, because you are buying the base and all the accessories, this is going to be a little bit more expensive than an off-the-shelf bumper. But for those of you who can't find a bumper that matches all of the features, the looks, and the budget that you have, this may be a good option to take a look at.
As I said, this is a bumper kit, and at the heart of the kit is the Rugged Ridge XHD Winch Bumper Base. This bumper base can be run all on its own if you'd like to, but it is a little bit on the plain side. The base is made of steel, it's covered in a textured black powder coat finish, and it has a couple of features that I really like. One is the fact that it accepts the factory fog lights out of your factory front bumper. That way, you don't have to go out and buy auxiliary lighting if you don't want to. You can use what you already have.
The other feature I like about this bumper base is that it accepts any standard winch. You'll be able to bolt any winch into there without the need to buy any additional hardware, like any other winch mounting plates or anything like that. Your new winch will bolt right up to your bumper. But because this is a kit, you don't just get the center section. You also get this bumper hoop that bolts right on top and these high-clearance bumper ends. The high-clearance ends are really nice for those of you running a larger tire, maybe a 37-inch tire and you wanna make sure you don't have any clearance issues between the tire and the bumper ends.
Again, because this is a modular setup, the accessories, this hoop and these ends, those are things that you can change. You can get stubby bumper ends, you can get a stinger bumper hoop, and you can change upfront here to add some additional D-ring mounts for recovery. This setup is very modular and completely customizable.
This bumper setup will bolt right onto your Jeep so you won't have to cut or drill anything. The first step in the installation is to remove your factory front bumper, and you'll do that by first removing the factory splash guard and then removing the eight nuts that are holding the bumper onto the bumper horns. After that factory bumper is removed and out of the way, you can get to installing your new bumper.
Now, I would recommend that you bolt the bumper ends onto the center and bolt the hoop onto the center section as well before bolting the bumper base onto the Jeep. Some of these bolts can be a little bit difficult to get to after the base is already on the Jeep. With that in mind, you'll also want to remove the factory fog lights out of your factory bumper and bolt those into your base, and if you're running a winch, you'll wanna bolt that on as well.
Once you have all of the accessories bolted onto the bumper base, you can then put the whole base onto your front bumper. You'll do that by bolting directly through the front of the bumper into the frame horns, giving you a nice, solid, strong connection. The whole installation process of this bumper shouldn't take you more than an hour. However, if you are wiring a winch, it may take you a few additional minutes. You won't need any specialty tools to get this job done, just a good socket set.
As I said before, a modular bumper kit like this is going to be more expensive than an off-the-shelf bumper that is not modular, but you're getting something for your money. You're getting the ability to customize this bumper. As your build grows, you can change out different accessories on this bumper, instead of having to scrap the whole thing and getting a new bumper. So if you're somebody that likes to change it up a lot, a setup like this may end up being cheaper in the long run.
So if you haven't been able to find a front bumper that matches all of the features, the style, and the budget that you have, looking at a modular front bumper setup like this may be a good way to go. This will grow with your build and give you the ability to change up your bumper without having to scrap the whole thing and start over again. So that's my review of the Rugged Ridge XHD Front Bumper Kit with High Clearance Bumper Ends, fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs, that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.
