    Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from ExtremeTerrain.com, and this is my review for the Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier, fitting all 1987 to 2016 Wranglers. This version has 12-inch tall sides, but there's also a version with 7-inch tall sides to fit your needs. Whether you have a YJ or a larger four-door JK, space is always at a premium in our smaller Jeeps. And if you're somebody who likes to go tailgating or camping, or you just have a lot of gear to haul around, you'll want a little bit of extra room. So if you have a 2-inch receiver, this is a really nice option. Now, obviously, you're not going to leave something like this in place when you're doing hardcore off-roading, but it'll definitely help get your stuff to your campsite. This rack gives you plenty of extra cargo space. It's 4 foot by almost 2 foot, and this version has the 12-inch tall sides. But like I said before, there's also a version with 7-inch tall sides. I like that those slats on the bottom are nice and close together so you can hold some smaller items without the risk of them falling right through. And there are plenty of spaces to attach bungee cords or ratchet straps to keep all of your stuff where it should be. Any time you're hanging cargo off the back of your jeep, weight is definitely important. And one of my favorite parts about this rack is that it's built from aluminum, so the whole thing only weighs 22 pounds. And it's finished off with this durable black powder coated finish, which'll hold up really well and it looks good. The rack itself is rated to hold 300 pounds of cargo, which is probably more than you'd be able to fit in there. The basket on this rack is really well-built. You can tell when you look at the welds, and it doesn't flex. I like the basket. However, something I noticed about this cargo rack and a lot of other hitch-mounted cargo racks is that they sit pretty far back from the Jeep, and any time you're getting all that weight further away from the vehicle, you're causing additional leverage. Now, the space between the rack and the spare tire is a good thing because you can run a really wide tire, and it doesn't matter what backspacing you have on your wheel. You're not going to have a clearance issue. However, again, the further you get away from the Jeep, the more leverage there is. Something else we noticed when we were installing this rack is there is a little bit of a wiggle. Now, I don't think it's anything that's going to cause the rack to fall off when you're going down the road, but it was something that we noticed. There is a little bit of assembly required when you get the rack home. The basket itself comes fully assembled, but you will have to put on the receiver bar and the support braces. In order to do that, you'll put the basket upside down on a table or on the ground, put the receiver bar on top, and then the support braces on top of that. After you have the six bolts, washers, and nuts loosely in place, you can start tightening everything down. That assembly is something that you're only going to have to do one time. After the basket's assembled you can put it in and out of the hitch as many times as you want in just seconds. However, you will need a standard hitch-pin to hold it in place. The initial assembly shouldn't take you more than 20 minutes, and the only tools you'll need are a 13-millimeter socket and open-end wrench. I do think you get a lot of value for what you pay for this. Again, it has a really solid powder-coated finish, and I like the fact that this is aluminum. If you're somebody who is going to be using the rack every single weekend or, especially if you're going on the beach where you have that salt air and that saltwater, I think having a well-built aluminum rack like this is definitely worth the extra money. If you're somebody who's just using the rack maybe once a year to go on vacation, maybe you can get away with one of the less expensive racks. So, if you want to add a little bit of extra cargo space to your Wrangler and you have a 2-inch receiver, I think this hitch-mounted cargo rack is a really nice choice. It's really well-built, really light weight, and it's going to hold up over time. So that's my review of the Hitch Mounted Cargo Rack XL, fitting all 1987 to 2016 JKs, that you can find right here at ExtremeTerrain.com.

Extra Storage. For those with a full cab and a full life the Redrock 4x4 Hitch Mounted Cargo Rack is a smart investment. Providing you with 48" x 22" x 7" of extra space, this rack mounts directly to any standard 2 inch receiver to give you more cargo space for trips when your Jeep is at maximum capacity. It easily accommodates larger aftermarket tires and tire carrier bumpers by providing extra room between your bumper and rack.

Quality Construction. This Redrock 4x4 Wrangler Hitch Mounted Cargo Rack is crafted from aircraft aluminum for extreme strength without the hassle of extra weight. This basket weighs in at only 22lbs and is finished in a durable black powder coat to withstand wear and tear due to the elements.

Application. The Redrock 4x4 Hitch Mounted Cargo Rack is designed to fit any standard 2 inch receiver; We recommend its use on your 1987-2018 Jeep Wrangler YJ, TJ or JK model.

Review from RedRock 4x4 Hitch Mounted Cargo Rack - 12 in. XL (87-18 Wrangler YJ, TJ & JK)

      Cargo Carrier

Excellent carrier. Sits far enough away from the exhaust so you don't have to worry about the heat affecting your items. You can open the back door alittle, just enough to take the soft top on and off. Very light weight. Wish it would fold. Over all, very good product and well made. I've had the carrier a few months now and no rust even though some of the metal is visible where the hitch connects to the carrier. Also, the carrier can handle the weight. I carried 250lbs of sand with no problems.

The rack is attractive, sturdy, and just the right size for what I needed to haul equipment to and from the beach. My only complaint is that the paint isn't durable and it's peeling.

      Looks Promising

Will be going on a trip in the following weeks and I know storage has always been somewhat an issue with my jeep as there isn't much space to load up cargo. Overhead racks are pain and this seems like a perfect alternative. Will update this review after the trip along with pictures.

Review from RedRock 4x4 Hitch Mounted Cargo Rack - 12 in. XL (87-18 Wrangler YJ, TJ & JK)

      Best Jeep Basket

One of the pitfalls of a JK is limited cargo space. A hitch rack is the current resolution path I'm pursuing. Roof racks are (IMO) ugly, hazardous to load, and some of the trails I've been on trees aggressively scrub the roof. A trailer is another option but then I'd need to license, store, and maintain it. This hitch rack is very well thought out. The Al is light enough that it is easy to install and remove. The tongue is long enough that it clears the spare w/o crowding usable space. The basket is narrow enough that your load will not block your tail lights. The cage is deep enough that you do not need to worry about your cargo walking off the edge. I did a ton of research before I chose this hitch basket and my criteria was set after using a 52" wide steel flat hitch rack a few times. I give it four stars only because I feel like it is over priced.

Review from RedRock 4x4 Hitch Mounted Cargo Rack - 12 in. XL (87-18 Wrangler YJ, TJ & JK)

      Solid build

Great product that was easy to assemble and install. Used it out in the Mojave desert for a week transporting all sorts of gear on the highway and off road. With anything tow-hitch mounted, you'll want to be mindful of your clearance if you're off road / trail. Great storage option for me. Make sure your spare tire is mounted clear of the top frame for easy access to your gate. Otherwise you'll need to constantly remove / attach the cargo rack.

Review from RedRock 4x4 Hitch Mounted Cargo Rack - 12 in. XL (87-18 Wrangler YJ, TJ & JK)

      Nice, quality lightweight cargo rack.

I bought this to use with my 2005 TJ. My main concern was that it would clear the 33 x 12.50" rear tire that hangs off the back of my door and was glad that the XL (41") version is the one offered here. It allows me to open my tailgate door enough to have some access to my interior, however to get the door mostly open I still have to use an 8" extension, which works just fine for my purposes. If I don't use the extension I can open the door a bit, but not as much. It's a really nice rack. It comes pretty much assembled. You pull it out and and all you have to do is connect the shaft to the bottom the rack via six bolts. A set of good instructions is included. Anyone can put it together. A lot of the cheaper racks come in pieces and have to be assembled completely and have plastic corners that break off. This is a high quality, solid rack that is made of aluminum and painted so it looks great and is very lightweight. I'm 5'2" woman and can lift the rack and install it easily. It will fit my Rola luggage bag nicely and it fits solid into the receiver and doesn't wobble. I installed a hitch stabilizer in in any case so I don't anticipate any problems. If you are looking for a nice lightweight, quality cargo rack with an extra long length to give some clearance for the spare tire on your Jeep this is the one. It costs a bit more but is worth it.

      Great rack

Loved the size of the rack and the sides of the basket were an excellent height for most cargo loads. The rack itself was light and easy on the back. Only suggestion is that I would have liked the hitch to have been adaptable for using a screw pin.

Review from RedRock 4x4 Hitch Mounted Cargo Rack - 12 in. XL (87-18 Wrangler YJ, TJ & JK)

      Exactly as billed

very light weight. I like the high sides as it lends to better support of the cargo. We have 35" spare tire and cannot open back door with cargo rack on....but wasn't expecting it to with such a large tire, also if the rack has cargo in it no one will be able to open their door no matter what size tire they have. Not sure any other cargo rack would perform differently. Assembled easily. It would be nice if there were optional holes in the receiver bar so that you could adjust how far in or out you would like the rack positioned behind your bumper. The way mine is situated, it could be set closer to the bumper by about 3 to 4 inches. I would drill the holes myself but not sure if this would impact the integrity of the weight rating so better left to the engineers to redesign.

      Decent

This does the job used it cross country however it feels kinda flimsy so it made me concerned to must a decent amount of weight on it. Also the mount sits to far out from the tire so again it feels flimsy but at the same time Cole enough to the tire you can’t open the gate. Because of this I advise drilling another hole in the tongue to make it sit closer I feel this would fix the flimsy issue

      Cargo Rack

Purchased rack to get extra space for camping trip. If the holes were drilled properly in the hitch post this would have been a 5 star review. Contacted manufacturer and they did admit that a few of the units were shipped with the holes drilled an inch off. Being that we were leaving the next day, a replacement part would not arrive in time. I asked if I could drill the holes myself without effecting any warranty. I was told it was no issue and I was able to complete the assembly in about 15 minutes. The rack itself is perfect for luggage, coolers, and any other item that can be strapped down easily. While driving I did not notice any noticeable shifting of the rack while in the hitch. In order to access my rear door, I removed my spare tire and gained valuable space.
