All I need to do is put a 33x12.50 tire on a 17x9 wheel on my jeep. Will there be any issues with the factory mount?

MattC

  • The RedRock 4x4 Rear Hinged Tire Carrier will have no issues fitting your 33x12.50 tire. The stock mount may require a spacer depending on your wheel offset, but the RedRock 4x4 Rear Hinged Tire Carrier w/ Tire Mount will require no spacers.

Review from RedRock 4x4 Rear Hinged Tire Carrier (07-17 Wrangler JK)

    Not the best choice

I bought this product for my 2016 Rubicon. Although it is solid and well built, I was not happy with a few things. First, there is a welded stopper that does not allow the door to swing fully open - the back window barely cleared my 33's. Second, it rattles constantly. Finally, the bolts are not painted. If you can live with these things, it is well built and solid and the price is right.

    beefy, but....

picked up the tire carrier due to the heavier wheels/tires on my '14 JK. Where the installation instructions were OK, it is next to impossible to align the hinges with everything together. I had to eyeball the hinges, then put the gate back on. Not great, but it works.

    Good, solid and functional

This tire carrier gets the job done. It is extremely solid and well built. It will definitely support the door and any of the larger tires you want to run on your Jeep. There were only 2 draw backs, the first was the fit was just a little off and some additional adjustments to get the door to close properly were needed. It wasn't major but for someone who is not very mechanically inclined they will become frustrated. The second, while the product is extremely well built it does still retain a bit of an "industrial" feel it could use a little polish. Over all it is very functional and I would definitely recommend it.

    red rock hinged tire carrier

The hinges are work but are not sizes with each other correctly. The installation was simple but at least 20-30 minutes could be saved if a sheet was included showing where each bolt goes and what the plastic tubes are for. If I did another install it would be a half hour job, less painting

    One hand operation

I bought this because of the one hand operation. It was a little trickier to install than I thought it would be. Had to run to hardware store twice. (one of the stainless bolts was not in package, spacers were too big and made out of pvc pipe) Overall pretty happy and not rattles.

Review from RedRock 4x4 Rear Hinged Tire Carrier (07-17 Wrangler JK)

RedRock 4x4 Rear Hinged Tire Carrier (07-16 Wrangler JK)

The item is very heavy duty. Everything is 1/4" solid steel, including the new hinges. I have a 33" tire with solid steel 17" wheel which is quite heavy. Install is fairly straightforward, but lineup of bolt holes and hinges at the same time proved a little more challenging, but nothing that couldn't be handled. My product did not come with any install instructions, so I googled a similar product install which proved helpful. Install took approximately 3 hours due to some minor lineup issues. Once installed, no more tire bounce and rattle. Problem solved. And the price is much more affordable that most others, while not sacrificing quality.

    Awful product

I don't know where the other reviewers are getting their ratings from. This product is awful. Removal of existing hinges and replacement with this product leaves a portion of the unpainted tailgate metal exposed. Hardware (nuts and bolts) that come with the product began to rust within weeks of install Powder coated metal began to rust at weld points within weeks of install Mount and brake light stem vibrate (loudly) when you go over even the slightest bumps in the road. Look elsewhere- this product is a dog

    Great product for the price

first let me start by saying I would buy this again, but it is not a perfect fit for everyone the kit came with no mounting instructions BUT it is not difficult to figure out meaning that you may have to pull it of two or three times before all the hardware is used. :( the final fit is not the best but my rear door and glass do shut all the way with no rattles and my 38" spare has plenty of support and does not rattle one bit. so in short, would I recommend this tire carrier? YES is the product better or as good as whats out there? NO :( why i recommend buying this one over others? because it just plain works and I no longer have to worry about my tailgate falling off :)

Red Rock 4x4 Rear Hinged Tire Carrier w/Tire mount

The product itself has met all my demands. It is strong enough to handle a large tire and the cost is lower then replaces a bumper with a spare tire bracket by about 50%. I did have one problem with the product. It didn't come with any direction.

Looks great and very sturdy but alignment issues

The only reason that I give this just an average review is because of the hinges and bolt holes. I was disappointed with how the hinges did not have a flush fit with the rack. There is about a 1" air gap between the 2 pieces and no spacers were shipped in the box (not part of the sale). This gap caused the hinge bolt to fall out while diving because I could not tighten it to catch enough of the nylon nut. Also the other holes that mount the rack to the tailgate do not line up exactly so it is rather difficult to thread those bolts in without stripping them out. Maybe I just received a bad one from a new guy drilling holes but who knows. If I did not have the alignment issue then I would say this is a great product. The tire fits nicely on the rack and doesn't block out too much of the back window and I have 33's. Even with my aligment issues it took me less than an hour with just some basic hand tools.

Review from RedRock 4x4 Rear Hinged Tire Carrier (07-17 Wrangler JK)

Stout carrier - 1/2 the price of the competitor's

If you've the JK gate rattle from the oversize tire and your wanting to keep single swing operation, without paying double for the other guy's version, this one might be for you. Bought this one after having to take the spare (35") off the gate due to the rapidly increasing rattle. Similar to noted in another review, the carrier had several chips in the powdercoating out of the box. Decided to touch up with black spray paint before getting going (sprayed nuts/bolts while at it). Placed some wood blocks between the bumper and bottom of the tailgate for support before removing the factory hinges. Thanks to the other review, I had already purchased the touch-up spray paint for the areas behind where the factory hinges and and hinge brackets were mounted. (Thanks for the heads up! Jeep did not paint these areas behind the hinges or hinge bracket and these areas WILL be visible.) Doing the install outside and temps were moderate, so several hours in before I could begin with the actual install steps. Installation for me was no so straight forward. First, I found that the supplied spacers (which go between the gate and the angled portions of the new carrier) were too long to keep the gate inline with the body and had to cut them by what amounted to ~3/16" each (this was after a bit of trial and error - since the JK tailgate is somewhat rounded and it is difficult to get a measurement between the carrier and the inset on the gate where the old hinges were). [How did I know they were too long for my rig? With the spacers set between the gate and the carrier, the flat portion of the carrier plate (where the tire mount goes) was about an inch off the gate. While I could use some serious force to snug it to the gate, this pushed the hinge end of the tailgate inward (seriously compressing the weatherseal) and pushing the edge of the gate about 1/4" inset from being flush with the body at the hinge side.] With the spacers cut, was able to snug the carrier plate up to the gate and install the spare tire mount (I reused the factory mount). Was going to mount the bolt on TerraFlex bolt on CB antenna mount while 'into' the bolts on the back of the gate, but realized that it will not work due the lip on the top edge of the carrier (will return it and use/mod another option - might be able to drill through the lip on the carrier to mount the antenna, but I haven't yet meausred this out). With the bolts installed and nearly all tight..I found my next surprise with other aftermarket pieces - I opened the tailgate and found that the upper hinge hit the tail light guards I had installed a while back. Took the light guard off, and shifted the tailight over a bit and did have the clearance to swing the gate open. (Black light guards and other trim on the 'orange crush' - gotta have 'em..hmm, what now). After shifting everything as far as possible to try and get the clearance, still needed more room. Decided to break out the grinder and rounded out the edge of the upper hinge mount on the carrier to get everything to clear and allow the gate to swing open with the tail light guard on. A little more black paint touch up on the carrier and on to my next step. I had planned on installing HI-Lift mount bracket (style that bolts on at the gate hinges), but with the upper and lower 'lips' and the angled section on the plate this wouldn't work so I needed to shift the location a bit and mounted it to the carrier on the angled portion nearer to the hinges. This location also sets it out a little further from the rear glass. I set the base of the bracket onto the lower lip which should provide for some added strength but also helps locate it toward the left to avoid creating a new problem the tail light. Overall I'm pleased with the carrier, although I did have some challenges with my install, (some of which are not noted - of course). Haven't had her on the road much since installing this weekend, but so far haven't noticed much noise from the back - a welcome change and hoping it will stay that way. Overall look is good when installed, but gotta admit that I like the look even better after installing the hi-lift jack mount onto angle the carrier as I did.

Review from RedRock 4x4 Rear Hinged Tire Carrier (07-17 Wrangler JK)

    Very Stout!!!!

When I received the carrier, there were a few chips in the powder coat. I purchased some flat black spray paint and touched them up (no big deal). Prior to removing the factory tailgate hinges on my JKU, I wedged a block of wood between the bumper and bottom of tailgate so that the gate wouldn't drop down and helped to ensure alignment. Installation was straight forward. Beware: area on gate where factory hinges were WILL need to be sanded and painted. Jeep did not do this and it will be visible after new carrier is installed. Overall I'm pleased. Just wish the new bolts were black but I plan to paint them.

    Bolts Right Up

Appears pretty strong. Easy to install. Easy to mount CB antenna to it. I had to grind the tab to allow my back door to open more than 1/2 of the way. Still does not open completely without breaking the taillight lens.

RUGGED BUT A PAIN TO FIT RIGHT

If your not looking for pretty then this is a kit for you. heavy duty but is a pain to install and line up. In the instructions it shows to leave the bolts loose on the body to line up the bolts on the body. However there would be no way to mount it and then tighten up the hinge to body bolts because they are covered. so its swing open tighten, swing closed to check fit. If off, swing back open loosen bolts, adjust up or down , retighten swing back to check fit and so on until its all in line. you will have to paint behind the original hinges because you will uncover from the factory where there is no paint and minimal primer.
