Review & Installation Video

Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com, and this is my review of the RedRock 4x4 Billet Grille Inserts, available for all 2007 and up JKs. These are available in both the black finish that you see here and a polished finish. Today, we're gonna talk through the installation of these grille inserts, as well as some of the features and the construction. These grille inserts are for those of you who wanna change up the look of the front of your Jeep but keep that iconic seven-slot grille. A grille insert like this will not only change up the look of the front of your Jeep but also provide a little bit of protection to your radiator, which is important. Those large slots on the front of your Jeep can be a magnet for stones, and you can certainly get some damage to the radiator. This will help to protect against some of that. These are an aluminum grille insert, which means they are a high-quality product that are gonna hold up and last a long time, all while looking good and without breaking the bank. As I said, these are an aluminum grille insert and they're available in two different finishes, either the black that you see here or a polished finish. So you have a couple of different options, depending on what look you're going for on your Jeep. Something I really like about the fact that these are aluminum is, even if they do catch a stone throw and get a chip in them, they aren't going to rust like a mild steel will. I also really like the way that these install on the Jeep. It's a very solid installation. You don't have to drill anything, so it makes it very easy to install and they're gonna stay exactly where you put them. As far as the install, I will give these a very simple one out of three wrenches. To be in the process, you'll remove the six clips across the top of your grille and then give it a pull to remove it from the Jeep. From there, it's simply a matter of laying down the grille inserts upside down. Lay your grille face down on top of it, and then use the included hardware to sandwich the grille between your new insert and the bracket that's included. Once all of the hardware is bolted down and these are securely in place, you simply reinstall the grille onto the Jeep by pushing the lower clips in place, and then reattaching the six upper clips. The whole installation won't take you more than an hour and you won't need any specialty tools, just some traditional hand tools. RedRock 4x4 is known for making a high-quality product at a budget cost, and these are no different. The finish on these, the way that they're built, the way that they look when they're installed on the Jeep is all top notch. However, these will save you a couple dollars over some of the other brands on the market. So, I think that if you like this style, if you're looking for a grille insert like this, the RedRock 4x4 ones are definitely a good option. So, if you wanna change up the look of the front of your Jeep but you don't wanna get rid of that iconic seven-slot grille, adding a set of grille inserts like this is a great option. These ones are going to be very high quality and well-built, all while being a little bit less expensive than some of the other options on the market. So, that's my review of the RedRock 4x4 Billet Grille Inserts, fitting all 2007 and up JKs, that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.

How do you open the hood with these installed?

Brooke

  • With the RedRock 4x4 Black Billet Grille Inserts installed, you would open the hood with the same methods as stock, releasing the two rubber latches, and then using the release between the hood and the grille.

Drilling Required? I know it says this bolts on, but do you need to drill holes to secure the bolts into the grille? I'm debating between this insert and another mesh-style one which DOES require drilling. I'm a new owner, and am looking for an easy install.

Belleayre

  • No, the RedRock 4x4 Black Billet Grille Inserts (07-17 Wrangler JK) does not require drilling into the grille. If you have any questions about install you can check out the install guide underneath the "Installation Info" tab.

    Grille inseerts

Took a little over an hour. You have to be patient with the nuts and washers as they are trying. Getting them centered is the trick and not scratching the grille is important. The directions were good and pulling out the grille is easy and laying it on a flat surface with a towel or blanket is best. They do keep a lot of big road particles from getting in your radiator. Looks great.

    Poorly built

I bought a set of these, the product came nicely packaged and looked great. I went to install them and the fit is horrible and some of them didnt fit at all. These fit by tension, billet on one side of the grill and a bracket on the other side, when tightened, its suppose to "sandwich" together. The nuts are welded to the billet and some are so far out of place, you run out of thread before it gets tight. I would not recommend this product. I do have to give Kudo's to ET's customer service, sent an email explaining the situation, got an email back with a return tag. I sent it back on their dime and they refunded me fully.

Do not waste your time with this product. The billet grille inserts look nice but the mounting hardware is poor. The brackets do not fit and the screws are not long enough. I flattened my brackets in a vice and purchased longer screws to make it work. Bottom line: purchase a different product!

Review from RedRock 4x4 Black Billet Grille Inserts (07-18 Wrangler JK)

Good Fits -- Need Better Parts

Ordered the Billet Grille Guards on Tuesday and received them on Friday. Extreme Terrain was great. Installation was a bit challenging -- 1) the nuts that secure the brackets on the back of the inserts is smaller than the diameter of the nut. Had to purchase washers so the nut wouldn't pull through the bracket when tightened; 2) the plastic on the back of the grill had to be manipulated so it was inside brackets that hold the billets in place. This meant more than one person was needed to get the inserts installed; 3) the screws are not stainless steel or aluminum as I expected. I installed the inserts on Saturday and ran the Jeep through the car wash on Sunday and several of the screws rusted. I had to touch up all the screw heads as I was worried they would all rust. Otherwise, great product and looks sharp!

    Quality and looks!

Welll made and easy install! Tip: make sure you have the correct side on the top. I read where people were complaining about the fit, that may be why. They seem to have a snug fit that would hold up off-roading. The instructions suggested Loctite on the nuts, but I did what any Southern girl would do, I grabbed my least favorite colored nail polish. It seemed to do the trick! It took a little over an hour, mostly because it was tedious installing the brackets on the inserts.

Review from RedRock 4x4 Black Billet Grille Inserts (07-18 Wrangler JK)

    Nice look, but...

These grille inserts were - as other reviews have stated - a bit of a pain to install but not overly difficult. As a weekend DIY-er, it took me a little over an hour and a half to install them. They do a nice job of subtly changing the look of the front grille although I'm not sure how much actual protection they will provide the radiator from flying rocks and debris. My one beef is that the small bolts provided to install the inserts (4 per insert x six inserts) have uniformly rusted which, at closer view, really detract from the overall appearance. For something not overly inexpensive, you'd think they would provide non-rusting hardware.

Excellent fit to my 2016 Jeep Wrangler

I like a process of upgrading my Jeep. To install those inserts required remove a grill, i like this process. Do not need any mechanical skills, just common sense. The grill looks great after installation. I have had the inserts which is just insert to the holes of the grill, it looks terrible for my opinion, this grill looks like a factory made, not any outside element visible.

    Took about 1.5 hours

The finished product looks awesome. The retaining brackets leave a bit to be desired. Super tight fit around the verticals of the grill holes. The 7mm nuts are nylock, so you know once it is together you will not have to mess with it again. I was concerned about road trash against the radiator. This is my 1st Wrangler, so I'm figuring it out as I go, but for $60+ this may save a radiator repair of way more than that!

    Good lookin' and hard workin'

I bought these inserts because they were attractive, non-rusting metal at a good price that would protect my radiator from serious SW tumbleweed threat. Yes, the directions could be a bit more thorough. Here's what I learned: 1) even though my '13 Wrangler's grille pins had slots, they needed to be popped out w/a screwdriver (pin, then shroud, then turn signals and off); 2) lay the longer, sharper tines of the grille blades to the bottom, the blunt side top and the cross pieces facing you on the floor 3) then lay the grille face-down over them bottom side to bottom tines 4) somewhat loosely attach right side braces on all 7 and then attach the left side only loose enough to manipulate the blades; 5) as you tighten, move the blades up toward the grille top where they will align and set; 6) add a drop of perma glue on each nut. All done. Replace grille. Hey, if this old girl can first time it, you can too. Tumbleweed tested in 60 mph crosswind.

Great Look! Closes all the gaps in your grille so you don't have to worry about picking up a rock on the freeway and taking out the radiator. Make sure you take the time to match each insert up with your grille before you mount them. You will be happy with the finished look!

    Great product to upgrade appearance

I received these the other day and couldn't wait to get them on. I am a new Jeep owner and have just started to do some mods. Install was fairly quick although I would recommend 2 people to install - one to hold in place and center and the other to bolt on. Other than that, good product for the price and I love how my Jeep looks with them.

    Great look for little cash

I love how much the billet inserts changed the appearance of the front. They also provide excellent protection to the radiator. My only concern is how the mounting points on several of the pieces protrude too far into the grille. That makes it impossible to get a snug fit when tightening the backing plates against the back of the grille. With that being said, I don't see them flying off or anything like that. Just not as snug as I'd prefer. Tip: The inserts only fit one direction. If it looks funny, flip it.

    Great look and functional

I love the way it looks and its functional , It took me a bit longer to instal as I installed them over Rugged Ridge Black Grill inserts , had to do a bit of drilling but the two of them together , the look it awesome. Some might ask why , I had bought the Rugged Ridge beforehand but the two of them together gives my jeep that extra unique look. And it cheeper then buying it as a set from Rugged Ridge. Both by themselves $140.00 , as a set from Rugged Ridge $199.00.

Much nicer than the cheap plastic inserts that you can put in your grill. I wanted something that would look nice and protect my radiator and AC evaporator from rocks jumping back at me and punching a hole through the fins. This definately fit the bill. The instructions need to be a little better in explaining that the inserts only fit properly when placed in one particular direction otherwise they don't fit in the grill openings properly. Once placed in the proper orientation, they look sharp. For someone with basic mechanical ability these aren't a problem to install.

Depends on what the kit comes with.

Instruction are photo copies, wording is good, but pictures are bad. Mine came with U channel and not flat bar like in pictures. Also instruction didn't match. But I had to bend the U channel outward to fit and secure to the back of the grill. Also have some black gloss touch up paint, painting is ok, areas were missing paint.

The brackets, tiny screws, and lock nuts are a pain to mess with, but once it's installed and fit then it looks great. Love the look and they are very rigid, so should be no problems with rocks causing radiator damage.
