Review & Install Video
I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com, and this is my review and installation of the Recon Red Smoked LED Tail Lights fitting all 2007 and up JKs. Today, we're gonna talk through the installation of these tail lights, which is a very simple one out of three wrench install. You'll be able to get this done in under an hour with just a screwdriver, but we'll talk more about the installation in just a second. We're also gonna talk through the construction and a few of the features of these tail lights.
These are for anyone who's looking to change up the look of the back of their Jeep. LED lights are a nice way to give a more modern upgrade because a lot of the modern cars rolling off the assembly line do have an LED light. LED gives you that really bright, modern look and that really crisp, clean on and off that a lot of us are looking for. These Red Smoked Lights are going to be a little bit more red than Recon's Smoked Tail Lights, so you just have a little bit of a different aesthetic look to choose from. Now, Recon makes a really high-quality light. These are plug-and-play, they're definitely going to work for a good, long time, and be very easy to install. However, you are going to pay a little bit of a premium for these lights. There are some less expensive options on the market, but you may be rolling the dice a little bit with how long those individual diodes are going to work. I'm sure you've seen, driving down the road, some cheap eBay tail lights that have a couple of LEDs out and they just don't look very good when they start to burn out. You're not gonna have that problem with these Recon lights, but again, you are going to pay a little bit more upfront for them.
These tail lights are going to mostly be an aesthetic mod. Now, if you've broken a tail light and you're looking for a replacement, you decide to go with an upgrade, you might land on these LED lights. But if you plan on doing the type of wheeling that could break a light, chances are you're not gonna wanna spend $400 for tail lights. You're gonna wanna get a cheaper OEM style replacement. But if you are looking for this style of light, maybe you like the more blacked-out look because that's what you're going for, or you just like the really bright and crisp, clean LED light that you get from these, these are going to be a really nice option for you.
Now, with the way that the Jeep works, it runs all of the lighting through the computer system, through the CAN-Bus system, so you can't just swap an LED bulb into your factory tail light without having the hyper flash or fast flash issue. Now, that comes from an LED having a much lower resistance than an incandescent bulb and the computer on the Jeep actually thinking you have a burnt out light if you were to just put an LED bulb in that factory housing. You can, of course, get a resistor module, but then you're getting into cutting and soldering. With something like this, Recon has taken all of that into account. These are gonna be completely plug-and-play. Just unplug your old light, plug these ones in, and it has all of the resistors, all the circuitry built into it so that it works seamlessly with the CAN-Bus system on your JK.
Because these are plug-and-play, again, a very simple one out of three wrench install, you'll be able to get this done in under an hour. All you need to do is, first, remove those factory tail lights, which you'll do with a Phillips head screwdriver, by removing the two screws that hold it in place. Once those screws are removed, you can pull the headlight out, disconnect the factory wiring harness, and set that light aside. From there, you'll just plug this wiring harness into your factory harness, set the light into the body, and use the included hardware to bolt it up. And that's it, very, very simple, even if you've never done automotive wiring, this is about as easy to install as changing a light bulb. This is going to be something anybody can do in your driveway with just a Phillips head screwdriver and a little bit of time.
Before, I mentioned that these are around $400 for the pair of lights, which might seem a little bit steep if you start searching around on the internet. However, I truly believe that you're getting a lot of quality with these lights. Personally, this is one of those situations where pry once, buy once, you pick these up, you're gonna spend a little bit more upfront, but you're not going to have to go replace them. Sure, you can get a set for $150, $200, maybe even less, but you're going to have to be replacing them and probably replacing them often. In my opinion, if you're gonna go LED tail lights or headlights, or really any lighting, I would recommend spending a little bit more, getting something quality that's gonna hold up, and that's where Recon comes in.
So, if you're looking to upgrade to an LED tail light on your JK, I think that these Recon ones are a really good option, as long as you have the budget for it. These are gonna hold up for a good, long time and look pretty good. So, that's my review of the Recon Red Smoked LED Tail Lights fitting all 2007 and up JKs that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.
