    Review & Installation Video

    Review & Install Video

I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com, and this is my review of the Raxiom auto-dimming 4.3-inch rearview mirror with backup camera, fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs. There are a few things that can make it difficult to see when backing up your Jeep, from tinted windows to a large spare tire taking up most of that rear window, so if you want to make it a little bit easier to see behind you and you want to add a modern convenience to your Jeep, this is a really nice kit, assuming you have the budget for it. There are a few different components you need for an effective backup camera system, and this kit includes all of them. The mirror that's included in the kit is not only auto-dimming, which is a really nice feature if you haven't experienced it before, if somebody behind you has their high beams on, the mirror will dim down to eliminate any glare that would otherwise go into your eyes, but the mirror also includes a three-and-a-half-inch LCD screen which is what you view your backup camera image on. The camera that's included in the kit gives you a really crisp, clean picture and it's in color, which is a nice feature, and you can really mount that camera anywhere you're willing to drill a three-quarter-inch hole. But, the kit also includes this really nice camera mount that not only puts the camera in an area where it won't stick out like a sore thumb, but also gives you a really nice high viewing angle to give you a very nice picture of what's behind you. The camera comes with all of the wiring harnesses that are necessary to get it hooked up, and it'll come on automatically when you shift the Jeep into reverse. Between the mount that hides the camera and the rearview mirror that looks factory, you can hardly even tell this system is installed on the Jeep until you shift it into reverse. The camera system also includes a second video input, so if you were to add a second camera up front, or any other video input, you can do that, as well. There are a few steps involved in getting this installed in your Jeep, and there is going to be a little bit of wiring involved, as well, but if you're comfortable with automotive wiring, this is definitely doable by yourself. You could always take this to a shop and have it installed, as well, if wiring isn't something you're comfortable with. The first step in the installation process is to remove your factory rearview mirror. There's just one set screw that you need to remove, and the mirror will come off. There's a trim piece that you'll need to cut a little bit off of to run your new wiring from the mirror, and a trim piece above the windshield and down the A-pillar that you'll remove to run your intermediate wiring harness. After that, you'll remove your spare tire and install the camera on the spare tire camera mount. There are a few other connections that you'll need to make at the back of the Jeep to pick up 12 volts of ground, and your trigger wire so every time you shift the Jeep into reverse the camera comes on automatically. After everything is installed in the Jeep, and all of your wiring has been tested and is working properly, you can use the remote control that comes with your rearview mirror to set up your parking guidelines and a few other options. The whole installation process should take you about an hour and a half, and you won't need any specialty tools, however, some wiring tools are necessary. As with most kits that include multiple components, you can generally put that kit together from individual components for less than the kit would cost. But, you're paying a little bit of a premium when you purchase a kit like this because everything is put in one box for you, it includes all the wiring harnesses, and you know for a fact that everything is going to work together. So, if you're looking for the convenience of having everything in one spot, and you have the budget for it, this is a good kit to look at. So that's my review of the Raxiom auto-dimming 4.3-inch rearview mirror with backup camera, fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs, that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.

Backing Up Made Easy.Raxiom's Rearview Mirror with Back up Camera provides an easy and convenient way to check your six while maintaining a clear line of sight on the front of your JK. Perfect for parallel parking and busy streets, this kit includes a replacement mirror, a spare tire mounted camera along with cables for installation. Blind spots will become a thing of the past when backing up, and you'll never miss low lying hazards again, allowing you to safely and effectively maneuver your Wrangler.

Superior Function. The rear view mirror features a 3.5 inch LCD display with 2 video inputs. You'll experience 307200 pixels for a super clear image set in a 4:3 ratio. Equipped with auto dimming function, this set up provides a smooth conversion when leaving reverse. This display is Jeep ready and performs in conditions from -4 degrees and has been known to master scorching temperatures well in to 150 degrees Fahrenheit. So even if you're Jeep bakes in the sun, your camera and rearview mirror will still function flawlessly.

Spare Tire Mount. Crafted from high quality materials, this adjustable mount is includes a built in bullet camera. It is designed to strategically place the camera within the spokes of your factory wheel for a central, clear view when backing up. This mount fits with most aftermarket wheels for ease and function.

Easy installation. This kit includes everything you need for installation and mounts to your factory rearview mirror's mount. Included in the kit is 8 feet of cable for a complete set up. No drilling or extra modification to your JK is required, making this a straightforward and easy upgrade.

Application. The Raxiom Auto-Dimming 3.5 in Rearview Mirror with Backup Camera is specifically designed for use on 2007-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK models.  JK Unlimited model applications may require a longer cable for installation.

Can you drop the front window with this mirror installed? I'm assuming not

    ColinD

    • No. You would not be able to drop the windshield with this Raxiom Auto-Dimming 3.5 in. Rearview Mirror due to the wiring from the mirror to the camera.

If I have a stock auto-dimming mirror, could I tap into the wires of that harness (ignition 12v, ground, reverse signal) instead of around the passenger footwell?

    • Hello, for the Raxiom Auto-Dimming 3.5 in. Rearview Mirror w/ Backup Camera we would recommend following exactly the instructions and not altering anything.

Is the mirror still visible while the camera screen is on. In all pictures the mirror is completely black while the camera monitor is being used. Also, do the guidelines on the camera turn when you turn the wheels of the vehicle?

      Better visibility while backing.

Wranglers are short but rear views are limited, really helpful when backing out of parking spaces. Camera and mirror appear to be very good quality, a similar system installed at Car Toys was $850. Basically saved the labor. Install was not hard, wiring has system powered off of the headlights circuit, so headlights on to make it work. Works for me, I turn my lights on for better visibility anyway. Nice clear picture from the camera.

      Good product,

Once I got this installed, it works great. The physical install was a breeze. The wiring diagran(step 15) left a lot to be desired. After talking with customer service at Extreme terrain, I was referred to Raxiom which was an endless loop of elevator music. I ended up getting power from the 12v plug (bottom right of center console).

      Easy to install

This was easy to install given you have some experience in wiring. It was frustrating at one point because the wiring is different in the 2017 that it requests to wire, so I had to search for a hot wire.

Auto dimming mirror and backup camera

I would have given this product five stars if it came with better wiring instructions. For the most part it was an easy install until you get to step 15. Here is how I ended up installing the wire to get it to work properly. The red wire from the camera gets connected to the reverse wire ( white with grey line). The red wire from the mirror I connected to a 12volt power line running from the cigarette lighter. This way the mirror would be powered on when ever the Jeep was running. If you connect it to the orange wire your mirror will only work if your lights are on. I found that the green wire was not needed. I originally wired it but it kept shorting out the system. The black wires should be connected to the closest grounding point one the Jeep.

      Great product!

Fantastic quality and even maybe better than the stock install rear view camera. Installation will run you roughly 250-350 so keep that in mind but it's worth it. I would give 4.5 stars just because of that.

      Back up camera

Installed the Raxiom back up camera with auto dimming mirror in my 2017 Jeep Wrangler. The camera works great and was fairly easy to install. However the wiring instructions are a lot to be desired. Took a long time to figure it out because of lack of specific details about key things you need to know. Ended up getting a professional installer to wire up the power wires because of fear of harming factory wiring harness. I do recommend this product but suggest letting a professional wire it up.

Instructions lack a lot to be desired

Instructions are not detailed, appear to be written by someone who installs electronics for a living in the JK Jeep. My kit was missing the t tap connectors which left me at a dead end late on friday evening. When I wired the unit as instructed, the instructions state that with the key on and the car not running, the camera and mirror monitor should work. I was pulling 11.93 volts on the reverse wire ( white with gray stripe) and had no voltage on the orange wire with a tan stripe ( figured out by trial and error that this is the headlight wire). I did a lot of trial and error because Raxiom tech support is only available to dealers on the weekends! After speaking with ET customer support, I received no usable information with my problem. When I cranked the vehicle and turned on the lights, the system worked. If this was a $30.00 Chinese unit I wouldn't be so aggravated, but it was a $500.00 kit with $30.00 instructions. I am waiting for a tech call by Raxiom to find a switched wire alternative to the headlight wire so I can button up the Jeep and drive it.

The finished product really is nice

I'm a novice when it comes to trim removal and automotive wiring, so take what I say with a grain of salt. The install took me 6 hours over 2 days and I needed a bit of help from my buddy who runs a shop. I really took my time and tugging at trim pieces as this something I needed to get comfortable with. I spent a lot of time trying to understand how everything was together so I could get it back together. The mirror is high quality. I can't see the screen when the car is not in reverse, even without the screen it is an upgrade There are 16 steps in the instruction to get this job done. 1 through 14 are straight forward. Step 15 is tapping into the cars wiring. TThis was a roadblock for me. My issue is my wrangler had different colored wires that needed to be used than what the instructions listed. The instructions said to test all the wires with a voltage meter. Okay, but the instructions didn't say which wire was ground(black obviously), hot, reverse. So I enlisted a buddy who had access to manufacturing wire diagrams and he basically did step 15 for me. My only criticism of the whole setup is, I wanted to run the video camera cable from the tailgate, through the fabric loom to the jeep's body. The loom is just not big enough to fit the video cable connector. Someone better may be able to cut the cable and splice it back together, but I just ran the cable along the outside of the loom. Getting the camera into the holder took a piece of foam and a small vice. I'm sure others used different methods. The mirror by default will have 4 gridlines. 2 are adjustable. I found the non-adjustable lines a bit of distraction and connected the green cables to get rid of them. Now that I'm done I couldn't be happier and I'm looking for my next project.

      Works Great

This product worked great for me! The picture quality is good on the camera, and the screen disappears when not in reverse, so it does not interfere with rearview visibility when driving. Had a few installation issues with wiring the blue and green wire, was hard to tell which one it was, but called customer support and got it straightened out right away. Overall I am very satisfied with this product.

      Good overall mirror

The installation took me (novice) about three hours. BTW the thick black wire is the satellite radio antenna- don't us that. I like the view it gives me in reverse (my wife insisted on a back up camera.) I used Posi-Taps for tapping into the wiring harness and highly recommend those, especially if you're pretty inexperienced.

Installation is a bit involved, but the camera works great

All said and done, this is a great product that fits seamlessly and does the job well. It looks and feels like it was installed at the OEM-level. Raxiom did a great job with this one. This was my first big Jeep accessory install, so take it with a grain of salt, but I don't know if I'd trust the installation time or ease listed on the site (30 minutes, simple installation). It took a good amount of time over a couple days, and I definitely wouldn't say it was easy, but I was able to get it done. (The instructions assume a few steps that veteran Jeep owners are likely aware of, but things I had to learn along the way.) The two biggest wrenches in the installation process were getting the camera wire through the back door and connecting the new wires into the existing cables. In one case, you're supposed to tap into the white and light gray cable. Only problem: there's about 3 that look white and gray, in a mess of about 50 cables. I was hesitant to tap into the wrong one, fearing I'd break sometime. However, if you follow the instructions to the tee and have a relatively high IQ, you can get this done. Just don't expect it to take an hour. =]
