How to Install Clutch Master & Slave Cylinder Kit (97-04 Jeep Wrangler TJ) on your Jeep Wrangler

Installation Time

3 hours

Tools Required
  • 14mm socket
  • 13mm socket or ½ socket
  • Flathead Screwdriver

Notes:

1. Don’t install the pushrod until after the master cylinder has been muted on the firewall. The pushrod cannot be removed after its pressed in the piston.
2. If you purchase a maser & slave set then don’t open the oil reservoirs as the system has been pre-bled.
3. Don’t break the plastic retainer on the salve cylinder. Install with the plastic in place. First time you press the clutch after you complete the installation the plastic will fall out by itself.

Installation Instructions:

1. Unpack the kit and identify the parts.

2. Locate the master cylinder on your Jeep.

3. Locate the master cylinder nuts on the inside of the firewall and remove them with 14mm socket.

4. Remove the pushrod from the clutch pedal using flat head screwdriver. Place the screwdriver head between the rod head and the clutch pedal and pray the rod out. Don’t be concerned if the plastic retainer break because you will be installing new pushrod.

5. Disconnect the clutch pedal sensor from the Jeep harness just to the left of the clutch pedal.

6. Remove the master cylinder from the firewall.

7. Locate the slave cylinder under the Jeep near the oil filter and starter. Remove 2 bolts with 13mm sockets.

8. Thread the new slave to the bottom on the Jeep following the same path the old hose went. Install new slave in place making sure it fit in the receiver grove. Its not hard to miss it. You may want to apply little grease to the slave head. Tighten back the 2x13mm nuts.

9. Finally, reverse the steps to install master cylinder. Tighten the 2x14mm nuts on the inside. Add the new bushing to the new pushrod. Move the clutch sensor to new pushrod. Push the new pushrod into the new master cylinder from the inside. Connect the pushrod to the clutch pedal. Connect the clutch sensor plug back to the wire harness.
