Jake: Jake here for ExtremeTerrain. And today I'm taking a look at the GTR Lighting Carbide LED Headlights with Amber Side Markers, Black Housings, and Clear Lenses, fitting 2016 to 2023 Tacomas without the factory LED daytime running lights. If you want to improve your Tacoma's lighting output while still keeping that OEM type of style, then these carbide LED headlights from GTR Lighting are going to do exactly that for a really reasonable price. They come in at a much lower price than a factory upgrade, but they are a significant upgrade when it comes to lighting output. Now, oftentimes when we see aftermarket headlights, they look like they don't belong on the truck. That, however, is not the case here at all. Now these are designed to be an OEM-looking setup that mimics the factory LEDs pretty closely with a few key differences. However, they do have significantly improved performance versus your stock headlights.Inside the light, you will find a black housing for a more sinister type of look, but it's not too aggressive. Surrounding those main lighting elements are these C-shaped LED daytime running lights. Now these are super bright, but they also automatically dim when the low beams are switched on. Now on the bottom portion of the light, you get LED turn signals. Now these are going to light up amber despite looking clear here on the table. Now these do also retain incandescent bulbs for your side marker lights here. But we've got a lot of good options that are inexpensive should you want to swap these bulbs out for some LEDs while you're at it. But they're going to work just fine as they come right here out of the box.But the biggest story here, although, are the main optics. Now, these are LED reflector-style optics with the large outer portions here functioning as your low beams, the inner ones functioning as your high beams. These are a bit different from some other lights on the market in that the cutoff is not super sharp. It's a little more smooth, more subtle, much more like a standard halogen-type projector. However, they are significantly brighter, as you'd expect from an LED. And the light itself is more of a white color. So the low beams here are going to put out 630 max lux versus 230 max lux, which is what your stock ones have. That makes them about 173% brighter. They're also much brighter the whole way across. So where a halogen would fade out on the edges, these do not. And the hot spot in the center is also wider. So it gives you a better overall lighting setup, much more visibility for you and other traffic. Now the high beams are much the same story. They put out 820 max lux versus the stock high beams at 630. Now, these also include stock style adjusters on the back, meaning that they are fully DOT, SAE, and FMV 108 SS compliant, which means they are fully street legal. So you can run these on your truck without having to worry about being compliant. Now construction is your standard ABS plastic for the outer housings with the black inner housings covered by polycarbonate lenses. And those lenses have a UV-resistant coating over top. So they're extra protected against UV rays and the weather. Everything is also sealed up to keep the electronics inside safe and dry as well. The LEDs are powered by TIR optics, and since they are LEDs, they should last you quite a long time. And everything here looks pretty nice too. You've got all your pigtails and connectors already done, plus your little heat sink down here on the bottom, and everything is set up just as you need it to be.Pricing comes in at about $700 for the set, and that does put them in about the middle of the range when it comes to headlights. These are going to offer you a lot of good features and some serious lighting output for the money, though. They illuminate like the more expensive options in the category, and they look like they could have been a factory part, but this pair also costs about half as much as just one of the equivalent OEM lights from Toyota. So if you want the output and the stock type of look for a great price, these are absolutely going to work for you.Installation is going to get a 1 out of 3 on our difficulty meter, and they should only take you about an hour to complete. Now, you're not going to need to modify anything on your truck. However, you are going to need to do a little bit of wiring stuff. However, everything is already done for you. Again, just like on the lights themselves, this harness that comes with it has the fuse tap already done with the fuses in it. And the pigtails are already done, too. So all you got to do is plug these in accordingly. Now, since your truck doesn't have the LED daytime running lights from the factory, you're going to need to use the included adapter as well. But again, everything is just plug-and-play. And these are going to bolt right in using all your factory mounting locations. You'll still be able to access the adjusters. So with that, why don't we head out to the shop and we can walk you through this process?Man: For this install, you will need an impact, 10-millimeter socket, clip removal tool, and a panel removal tool. What's up, guys? Today we're gonna be installing some headlights on our Tacoma, but before we get started, we're gonna send you to watch a short video on how to uninstall your factory lights, and we'll see you when you get back.Merideth: Our first step is to start with the hood open and then we can go ahead and pop off our grille. For that, you're gonna need a trim removal tool or a flathead screwdriver as well as a 10-millimeter socket. So our first step to removing our grille is to remove the two bolts that are holding it in up at the front support here. I'm gonna use a 10-millimeter socket and go ahead and remove those.Next, in order to release our grille, there are two clips on either side. I'm gonna use a flathead screwdriver to release those clips. Again, you could also use a trim removal tool for this. What we can do now for our grille is pull up on these two brackets here just to release it from this front support, then we can give it a good pull back and we'll be able to release the grille. In order to access the third bolt on our headlight, what we have to do is peel our fender back. There are a couple of clips in here, but what I'm gonna do first is remove these two bolts that are holding our fender and our bumper onto our Tacoma. I'm gonna be using a 10-millimeter socket. Now, once those are released, we'll have a couple of clips here. Now, one down at the bottom is already released because we've taken the fenders off before, but there's one in the middle. I'm just gonna use my flathead screwdriver very carefully. You can also, again, use a pry tool. I'm just gonna push down on that clip and carefully pull back.So now that is loose, so we're able to continue to disconnect our bumper. We're not gonna remove the bumper fully. We just need to move it down so we can access a bolt in this crease. So this clip up at the front is holding on part of our bumper, so I'm gonna use a trim removal tool and just pull that out.So after all of the bolts and clips are disconnected from the side and some of the bottom between the bumper and your inner wheel well, what we're gonna do is focus up here. We're gonna pull back on the bumper part of this tab, give it a good tug, and that should release it from the bumper clip on the other side. It might be helpful at this point to use a pry tool as well to work our way up the side and release the bumper from the bracket. And as you can tell, we don't need to take the bumper off completely. It's still secured at the front, but there is a bolt in here that is going to release our headlight. So with the 10-millimeter socket, I'm gonna start by removing that bolt that we just exposed. All right. Then we can move up to the top of our headlight to release the other two bolts. Then we can remove the two bolts up on top. They are also going to be 10-millimeter bolts. Use a 10-millimeter socket. So I am going to remove this clip at the side of our bumper just to pull the bumper a little bit more outwards. Give myself some room so we can get this side right out. We do have to slide the clip part of the headlight out. All right. So once the headlight is released, what we can do is expose our wires and start to disconnect our wiring harnesses. You're gonna have five in total on the back. Okay. Then we can fully remove our headlight.Man: Alrighty, guys, welcome back. Now that we've shown you how to remove your factory lighting, we're going to go ahead in with our new assembly. There isn't anything we need to do, this is a straight-up plug-and-play. So we're going to go ahead and get these connected and get it mounted. So we'll start with our marker light connector here. We'll plug our marker light connector in here. And we can start with the rest of our connectors by matching them up. So our green connector here is for our low beams. Now you'll notice the harnesses on these new lights are labeled for the low beam and high beam connectors because they do look the same. So we'll go ahead and plug our low beam one in first. Again, that is the green one. We can find our high beam one which is the yellow. Plug that into our high beam connector here. Then we'll find our dark gray connector here. That's going to go into this one. Make sure they snap into place. And then our last connector here.Once those all are clicked in, we'll go ahead and set this back into place and get it mounted back up. So we'll go ahead and slide our light back into position. We're going to work it behind our bumper here, our bumper cover rather. We'll get it down into place. Try not to get anything too tangled up here. Make sure your mounting points get back to where they're supposed to be. We'll lock our bottom tab in there. Make sure everything is lined up. Then we can go ahead and get this mounted. So now we'll go ahead and get our side mounting bolt back into place using our 10-mil socket on our impact. We'll go ahead and get our other mounting bolts in place, and then we'll go ahead and get our bumper cover and fender flare back into position. Now we can go ahead and reinstall our two upper 10-millimeter mounting screws. Get these back into place here. We'll use our 10-mil socket to go ahead and tighten them back down. Remember, you are tightening into a plastic insert here, so there's no real need to go crazy. They just need to be good and snug.So now we'll get our inner push pin here back into our bumper cover. Get that lined up. Get that back into place. Now, we can go ahead and push our bumper cover back into position. It should just have a couple of clips in its slots here. I'm just gonna push that in. Ours is a little worn out because it has been taken off many times, but they should just pop right back into place. And then we can go ahead and get our fender flare back into position here. Same deal. Just pop that back on. Again, ours is missing a few clips here due to previous installs. Then we'll go ahead and get our 10-millimeter bolts back in here.So now we'll go ahead and get our 10-millimeter screw back in our wheel well side of our fender flare. We'll go ahead and get that lined up. Get that back into position. And we'll tighten that down, again, with our 10-mil socket on our impact. Now you should also have your lower one as shown before, but ours is no longer with us due to previous installs and modifications, but from the factory, you should have that. So once you've got your headlight in on this side you can go ahead and repeat these same steps for the other side and then we'll reinstall our grille. So now that we have both the headlights and our bumper cover back into place, we can go ahead and reinstall our grille. So we'll get that lined up and then we'll get our mounting points in place. So we'll get our two locators in here on the side. We'll go ahead and push in to get our two bolt holes and two push pin locations back on. Then we'll grab our two push pins and get those back into place here. Push them down. Same thing on the other side. Then we'll get our two 10-millimeter mounting screws back in here up top. And again, we'll use our 10-millimeter socket on our impact to go ahead and tighten those down. Again, you're tightening into plastic inserts here, so no need to go too tight, just good and snug.Alrighty, guys, that about wraps up our review and install of our GTR Lighting Carbide LED Headlights with Amber Side Markers, Black Housings, and Clear Lenses for your '16 to current Tacoma without factory LED DRLs.
