Storage Construction. The Expedition Rack with the basket by Garvin is designed so that you can carry 300 pounds of gear and equipment safe off-road, or 500 pounds static weight. Fashioned from ¾ inch heavy duty steel tubing with 1 inch steel tubing supports, this rack is built to last. Black powder coat finish throughout prevents rusting. The Expedition Rack is covered by Garvin Industries's limited lifetime warranty against defects.

Storage Specs. The Expedition Rack is made to allow useful access to the roof, including removal of hard top front roof panels without removing the rack. The rack can be tilted to allow removal or installation of the soft top also. The basket's sides provide a confined container in which various small to medium items can be stored, including gear, camping equipment such as tents, fishing and hunting equipment, containers of food or drinking water, and so on.

Application. Garvin Industries's Expedition Rack is a roof rack that fits 2-door models of 2007-2018 JK Wranglers. This rack bolts on to brackets on the windshield frame in front, and the rear bodywork of the Jeep at the back. Minor drilling is needed in a few places to complete assembly, though this rack is mostly bolt-on. Ease of installation is between easy and intermediate. Basket assembly and attachment to the roof rack is straightforward.

Will this rack work with a 2015 freedom top? I have a 2015 Wrangler Sport with a freedom top.

Binx

  • Yes, the Garvin Expedition Rack w/ Basket (07-17 Wrangler JK 4 Door) offers enough clearance to remove the Freedom top front section without having to remove the rack.

What and where is the drilling required? If rack is removed are there plugs for wholes?

PaulB

  • The Garvin Expedition Rack w/ Basket will require drilling on the rear quarter panels under the top body crease and above the bumper. The kit does not come with plugs, however, the 3/8" plugs are very common and should be easily source-able if you decide the take the rack off. Attached below is the link to the installation guide if you have any further questions or concerns regarding installation. https://www.extremeterrain.com/garvin-expedition-rack-jk-44074-manu-install.html

2015 soft top opened, not all the way down. Will it fit under the rack when the rack is closed?

TravisO

  • The Garvin Expedition Rack will have space for the soft top to remain in the open position, however there will not be room to open/close the top with this installed.

Hello, is this roof rack compatible with the Smittybilt Overlander Roof Tent?

ZaT

  • Thank you for your question. The 300 Pound Off-Road Capacity and 500 Pound Static Weight Capacity, it should be great to use with your Smittybilt Overlander Roof Tent!

Your picture shows with a hard top and adjustment knobs to hold in place what happens if I have a soft top or no top with this rack still stays from not swaying with these knobs being used

ShawnE

  • The Garvin Expedition Rack w/ Basket is designed to be very versatile, with or without a hard or soft top on. The rack is mounted to the body of the vehicle and may possibly have a very small amount of sway without a top on but it is designed to be a stand alone unit.

Review from Garvin Expedition Rack w/ Basket (07-18 Wrangler JK 4 Door)

    You won't regret it!

After weeks of extensive research, I decided on the Garvin Expedition Rack and I couldn't be happier. I installed it myself in the course of two days. The instructions were clear and concise; absolutely spot on and easy to decipher. I must have checked my drill measurements at least six times. They weren't 100% perfect but they were pretty darn close. The great thing about this rack is it allows some room for error while ensuring a great fit. The rack is sturdy as can be. After having traveled 900+ miles with 250+ lbs worth of belongings on the rack, I have full confidence in its sustainability on the trails. For those of you wondering, there are no noticeable changes to my mpg, nor does it rattle or let you know its there. If you're thinking about making the purchase, rest assured - the Expedition Rack will NOT disappoint!

Review from Garvin Expedition Rack w/ Basket (07-18 Wrangler JK 4 Door)

    Disappointed

I'm not one to give negative reviews however I'm very disappointed in this rack system. First was the instructions the drawing looked like a 1st grader drew them. If you go on You tube they make it out how to be so simple ,not so much. So after spilling out just about every swear word known to man in 3 different languages it's put together. Here is the good part the hole point I purchased this design over the others is it's made out to flip over easily to take your tops off. Nope not at all first you have to undo 4 larger bolts 1 on each corner. Then you have to take the hole license plate assembly off. Then you have to bolt on these metal stops. Then it takes 2 people to pull it back. Then you finally get to take your top off. The tou have to take the medal stops off What??? Is it just Me but I missed the part that because of the rack it's going to take 2 people and over a hour to get some fresh air. Really????? I wish I saw this review before burying Mine.

Review from Garvin Expedition Rack w/ Basket (07-18 Wrangler JK 4 Door)

    Does what I wanted but........

The rack itself is wonderful and does what I wanted, needed it to do but, at a price. The wind noise is horrible! It may get a little better on a hardtop, I don't know about that! I did have a friend build me an aerodynamic shield that does help a lot 50 and under but it's still pretty annoying above that.

    Much easier than originally thought

I was very hesitant about drilling in to my body and quite frankly I was worried about my skill level doing a job like this. Reading the diagram for the drilling was slightly confising at first but once I figured it out it was simple. Remember measure twice (or 4-6 times and have someone else check it) and cut once.

    Strong, sturdy rack

Very sturdy rack that adds great look and function. Took about 3 hours to complete installation. Contents very well marked. Spent some time prior to installation watching a few assembly videos. Took my time and set up work area with tables and plenty of space to layout and assemble everything. Take your time to measure everything before drilling, and read through the instructions before just going step to step. Almost made the mistake of using holes on inner support bar to drill holes, instead of measurements given. Next step warns you to not do what I almost did, because bar will flex and fit to correct drill marks. There is room for slight margin of error. Just don't rush. Take breaks, and go back to installation videos if you have questions. Rack is sold to vehicle. Tightened everything back down after a week, and all was still solid. Does add a bit of noise once I crest 65 mph. Did the bungee strap trick as some sites suggest, and it made a huge difference. It is an expensive add-on, but feel it was money well spent as it adds great function, and distinction. Get all kinds of positive comments.

    Great product

This rack is exactly what I have been looking for. I searched far and wide for a rack. The prices are all over the place. This was in the higher end but it definitely is not lacking in quality. It was built very well with many considerations. The packaging was the best I have ever seen.. Garçon really took into consideration shipping. It looks great and easily holds my gear, kayak, and bike. The negative is that is marketed as a tip back. It appeared in the photos to be very quick. If you want it to be quick you need to carry tools for the bolt removal. I wish they considered some kind of pin release. Other than that great product and will continue to buy their products

    awesome rack

I got this rack because I was told I would be able to remove my top without removing my rack and it works with my snorkel. I also didn't want a rack that bolted to my hard top so this rack was everything I was looking for. It looks great and works great. I didn't like how unclear the instructions were and how many times we had to flip back and forth between pages. There isn't anything I dislike about the rack itself.

Review from Garvin Expedition Rack w/ Basket (07-18 Wrangler JK 4 Door)

    Great Investment

This is a great rack! It has lots of room, is very sturdy, and makes minimal noise. I had it installed by a shop due to lack tools and lack of time in preparation for a move. This was the first time the guys installed this model of rack and said it was very easy. The instructions laid everything out and all of the pieces were pre-identified. The rack covers the entire top of the 4 door and has tons of places for tie-downs. There are also pivot points at the rear which lets you take off the roof. The only issue I've had since traveling over 2,000 miles is the bolts at the pivots coming loose and needing to be tightened about every 300 miles. Nothing major, but it does rattle, and was concerning the first time until I figured it out.

    Great Roof Rack

Better instructions could have made the install a little easier but overall I'd say it went pretty smoothly. I was a bit hesitant to drill holes in the body of my Jeep but it turned out to not be as scary as I expected. I see a lot of people complaining about wind noise but with the Garvin wind deflector that I purchased to go along with the rack, I didn't even notice a difference. It's not like Jeeps are really all that quiet to begin with anyways. Overall this is a very sturdy rack that looks great as well.

    Garvin Expedition Rack w/ Basket

I've been building my 2012 Jeep Sahara Unlimited and I'm really happy to say I invested in the Garvin Expedition Rack w/ Basket (07-17 Wrangler JK 4 Door). I also got the Expedition Rack Ladder. They look awesome on my Jeep. Now I'll have the extra room to haul when traveling or hunting.

    Easier install than expected

I've had the rack on for 2 weeks now. It is a bit noisy, and crosswind seems to have added impact, but thats to be expected. It still isnt bad though, plus you can add the wind deflector to help with the noise. Installation was a bit daunting at first, after all, i was drilling into my brand new jeep! But as other said, measure twice, or three ti es even, and read the instructions beginning to end before starting. Installed by myself in 4 hours, and it really looks great. Packed qbout 150 lbs of gear and it handled it great!

    Loving this rack!!

I finally decided to spend the money on this rack and it did not disappoint! Even though the installation is somewhat involved. Anyone with some basic mechanical skills could get the job done, provided you are not scared to drill some holes in your jeep. The rack is very sturdy and it will soon have a tent mounted up there. For anyone looking for a great rack for their JK this is a great option to consider.

    Great

First off, everything came very well packaged. All the little nuts and bolts were decided into their separate bags and labeled for each step it assemble the rack. The directions were simple and easy to understand. The rack itself is super stout. It tells you specifically not to put any tires above 31" on the rack, but I did anyways lol. (Would be taken down for offroad) it makes little to no noise, no more than my light bar makes already. It looks fantastic as well. It took me a better part of 6 hours to install all by myself.
