      Video Review & Installation

Merideth: Hey, guys. So, today, we're checking out the Axial Switchback Projector Headlights with the Black Housing and the Clear Lens, fitting all 2012 to 2015 Tacomas. Now, these will be a great addition to your Tacoma if the current headlights on your truck are fogged up, they're faded, or you're just looking to replace them with a stylish and better-performing option. The daytime running light bar will also offer some more modernized appeal, great if you're in search of a refresh to the front end, and the projector lens will offer a boost in lighting performance, which will be good if you're currently struggling with front-end visibility. Each of these lights will feature a bright LED daytime running light with an amber switchback function for the turn signal, making you significantly more noticeable and, of course, a lot more stylish when driving around on the street. On the inside, you'll also see a single projector lens that houses the high and low beam, which will create a more concentrated and more visible beam pattern, making it a whole lot easier to see the road or the trail in front of you. Not to mention the black interior housing and the small, sporty details will add a subtle yet stylish touch when it comes to the build. Now, the housing will be made of a black ABS plastic material on the inside, and then on the front, this will have a tough, clear polycarbonate lens that will be able to handle a little bit more abuse than the standard plastic lens. Now, on the side, this will also feature an amber reflector to keep up with OE standards while additionally adding some more style. Now, the lights will also feature a simple plug-and-play construction and an OE fit for a straightforward install, all while being DOT and SAE-approved. These will be reasonably priced at roughly $450. Now, compared to other choices in the category, these will feature some stealthy and sporty style while also including not only the daytime running light, but also that switchback function. Now, on one hand, when taking a look at choices on the site that are a bit more budget-friendly, you'll usually see some less features than what you see here, including factory replacements as well as no daytime running light at all. Now, on the other hand, some more expensive choices may be fully LED or include more projector lenses in the actual build itself. However, if you don't necessarily need all that and just want a headlight that's right in the middle, offering good style and good lighting performance, then this set will be right up your alley. Install will be a one out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter, taking you about two hours to get the job done with some basic hand tools. Now, at this point, we can head over to the shop and check out a detailed breakdown of the install. So, that's gonna wrap it up for me. Let's go ahead and jump into it.Man: Tools required for this install include an impact gun, an electric ratchet, a hand ratchet, a clip remover tool, a flathead screwdriver, a panel remover tool, a shallow and deep 10-millimeter socket, and some microfiber towels. What's up, guys? Today, we're installing a set of headlights on our Tacoma. First, we're gonna watch a quick video on how to uninstall our factory headlights, and then I'll meet you right back here for the install.Woman: All right. So, the first step in our install, we're gonna remove several pop clips on each side of the grille to remove the grille itself. With a pop clip removal tool or a trim panel removal tool, go ahead and remove the pop clip. Remove the pop clip on the other side as well. At this point, you can remove two 10-millimeter bolts holding on the top of your grille. At this point, we can remove our grille, pull up on the plastic brackets on top, and then grab your grille and pull straight forward to release all the clips. All right. So, at this point, we're gonna remove the trim piece beneath the headlight. In order to do this, we're gonna grab a trim panel removal tool. And if you're worried about scratching your paint, you can throw a bit of painter's tape on the end here. To release the tab, go on the top here. You're gonna look for a green pop clip. Now, if you press on the back of the pop clip, it will release the tab. To release the back of this trim piece, put your pop clip in the end and twist forward because the clip goes in this direction. At this point, you can remove the two 10-millimeter bolts holding on the top of your headlight. All right. So, there is one more bolt that we do have to remove, which is a bit hard to get to. It's right about here on the bottom of your headlight. And the way we're going to access this is remove two bolts underneath the wheel well liner and one screw in the side of it. With a 10-millimeter socket, remove the two bolts underneath your bumper. At this point, we're also gonna remove a pop clip with a stubby flathead screwdriver. Twist it to remove. With that clip removed, peel back your wheel well liner. And now you should be able to access the bolt by going in through here to the back of the headlight. All right. Now with the wheel well liner back, you can see this bolt. You might have a little trouble seeing it on camera here, but you can feel the one that you have to remove. We're gonna grab a 10-millimeter socket and a ratchet, and we're gonna go ahead and get it out. With all the bolts removed, we're now gonna release this tab here. You can do this by hand or if you like, you can do it with a flathead screwdriver and you're just gonna pry forward. Release the two tabs at the top as well. Again, you can just lift up or if you have a flathead, just pry it off. Now that the headlight is released and loose on your truck, we're gonna disconnect each of the connectors at this point. Go ahead and pull each of them off. There should be three, one main and then two marker lights. And there's one a little bit farther forward up here. Now that everything is released and your headlight is disconnected, it's a matter of wiggling the headlight and maneuvering it in just the right way for it to come out.Man: Now, before we get our new headlights installed onto the truck, we're gonna have to swap over our side marker bulbs. So, we can come to our connector, we're gonna twist counterclockwise to get that out. We'll do the same thing on our factory headlight and then we can transfer our bulb from our factory to our new headlight. So, now we can twist counterclockwise and remove our side marker bulb. And then we'll come over to this side, twist that counterclockwise to get it out, and then we can pop our side marker bulb into place. And then we'll turn that to the right to lock it into place. And then once you're done with this side, you can repeat the same thing for the other headlight and we can get these on the truck. So now we're ready to get our new headlight installed onto the truck. Before we do that, it's important to point out we have a bolt-hole right here. We're gonna have a bolt coming through this way and into the U-clip in one of our bottom mounts of our headlight. Now, once we have a headlight in here, it's gonna be pretty much impossible to see that. So, you can go in through the fender liner and you're gonna have to do that one by feel. So, now we can plug in our harnesses. We're gonna do our two on the outside first and then we'll do this one once it's installed because this side of the harness is a little bit shorter, so it's gonna restrict our ability to maneuver our headlight into place. And now we can come back and plug in our one remaining harness. And now we can reinstall our two 10-millimeter bolts up top. And we'll tighten those down using a 10-millimeter socket. Next, we can reinstall our lower headlight trim piece. Now we have a little notch here that this is gonna slide into and then we can push our clip into place. Now, next, we can go into our fender liner to install our bolt that goes into the bottom side of our headlight. I've got a quarter-inch drive ratchet with a shallow 10-millimeter socket just so that we can get in there and have enough clearance to tighten down our bolt. So, now we can reinstall that bolt we mentioned earlier. So, we'll go in through our fender liner, find our hole, and then once we have our bolt threaded into place, we can grab our ratchet and tighten that up.So, now we can come back down into our wheel well and reinstall our 10-millimeter bolt that holds our fender liner. And then we'll grab a 10-millimeter socket to tighten that bolt down. And next, we can come back below our bumper and reinstall our two 10-millimeter bolts. And then once again, we'll grab that 10-millimeter socket to tighten these up. And now once we have our two bolts below our bumper reinstalled, we can repeat that whole process on the other side. So, now we can get our factory grille lined up and pushed back into position. Now, lastly, we can come to the top of our grille, reinstall our two push clips and our two bolts. And then we can grab our 10-millimeter socket to tighten our bolts down. So, that'll wrap up this review and install of the Axial Switchback Projector Headlights with Black Housing and Clear Lens through 2012 to 2015 Tacoma. Thank you for watching. And for all things Tacoma, keep it right here at extremeterrain.com.
