      Product Videos

Hey guys, I'm Eric with Extreme Terrain [SP]. In this video, I'm gonna give you my review and install of this grille guard in black for all 2016 and later Toyota Tacomas. You should really be checking this kit out. If you're looking to add a little bit of aggressive styling to the front end of your Tacoma, as well as adding a level of protection and the ability to add some off-road lighting. What I like about this kit in its aggressive styling is that it's contoured to follow the form and shape of the front end of your Tacoma, including the angles of the radiator grille. And it's also configurable. If you don't like the look of the individual slats in here, covering your headlights, you can undo a few bolts and remove those if you want to change up the look a little bit. And as I just mentioned, you can add some off-road lighting if you want. There are two pre-drilled holes in the center cross member. So, you can add a low-profile LED light bar, or individual rally lighting, whatever your taste. You can add that right to the center cross member of the grille guard. And it's already set up to do just that. Now, made from high-strength, carbon steel and protected in a two layer of black powder coat. This grille guard is not just about style. It's also about function. You're gonna get a substantial amount of protection for the front end of your Tacoma, especially if you like going out on those less-traveled trails, where you're gonna be pushing the nose of your truck down some trails that might be a little overgrown with brush or tree limbs. This is gonna give you substantial protection from those. What I like about it is it wraps around those headlights, which are a little bit exposed, the way Toyota designs these trucks. So, you're gonna have some protection there as well. The uprights of this grille guard are cut from a single piece and those pieces are one-eighth-inch thick steel, which makes it very sturdy. Welded to that, you have this inch-and-a-half diameter steel tubing that's gonna be very solid and gonna give you that wraparound protection. Now, this grille guard also mounts up to the frame down towards the bottom. That's gonna give you a very sturdy mounting point, and it's also braced about halfway up with a couple of additional brackets that are gonna attach to the cross member of the frame inside, behind the radiator grille. Nice little touch. I also like here is that they cover it in a thick kind of plastic rubber piece here that goes over these uprights. That's gonna give it a little bit more protection, especially against like flying rocks and other debris as you're going down the road. Now, don't be tempted to push against things. I don't think that's what this grille guard's designed for, but I think that's just to give it a little bit of added protection against chips and other things that might kind of ruin the appearance of your grille guard. Now, talking about protecting the finish of this grille guard, the manufacturer does provide a three-year warranty against any defects in the finish, as well as a one-year warranty against manufacturing defects in the materials. That's a pretty decent warranty. You don't see that often with a lot of products. However, coming in just under $600, that adds a lot of value to that price. I think compared to a lot of other options out there for front-end protection on your truck, that's relatively affordable and it keeps you well below the full-blown aftermarket bumpers that might be adding a little bit more protection to the front end of your truck, but it also comes with the cost of added weight as well. Now, as far as the installation goes, guys, I'm giving this a real basic one out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter. Just some basic hand tools are really all you're gonna need to get this installation done. We're gonna put the truck up on a lift here in a minute, but by no means do you need to do that. You'd be able to keep it down on its own weight in your garage or in your driveway to do this yourself. Now, I would budget about an hour of your time to get this job done. No problem. A couple of things I do want to call out about this installation is that if you want to keep the black plastic air dam that comes from the factory on the bottom side of your bumper, you are gonna have to cut a couple of notches to accommodate the mounting brackets for this grille guard. Now, we're not making this a permanent installation on our truck, so we're not gonna do that. But that is something I wanted to point out to you and the manufacturer also says that "the mounting of this grille guard may interfere with any front-facing cameras that you might have on your Tacoma, as well as any position or parking sensors that are mounted on the front bumper of your truck." So, with that said, let's take a look at the tools we're gonna use and go ahead with the installation. All right, the tools we're using for this installation are an electric impact wrench, extension bar, a six-millimeter Allen socket, 10, 16, and 17-millimeter sockets, and a 16-millimeter Crescent wrench. All right, now for this installation guys, we're gonna put our truck up on a lift and that's mainly to give you guys a better shot through the video of what we're doing underneath the truck. Now, the manufacturer recommends that you could either come at this job from underneath completely or also doing some of it from up top here. If you're gonna be doing it from up top, you may wanna remove your grille piece to give yourself a little bit easier access. We're mainly gonna be working from underneath the truck. I think that's gonna be a little bit easier. So, we're gonna go ahead and get started by removing our front air dam and go from there. All right. To get our air dam removed, you're gonna have a series of 10-millimeter bolts underneath here, and then also on the backside one on each end. So, we're gonna start on these front ones here. All right. I'm gonna grab an extension here, but still using a 10-millimeter socket. You're gonna have to support your air dam at this point guys because there's only one more screw holding it in on the driver's side. All right. Now that we have all those screws out, you can just pull your air dam away. All right, here on the passenger side, guys, you're gonna have three bolts here. This is the one we're gonna be removing the one that's on the outside. And we're also gonna be, now that we have our air dam off, you can see, we have access to this hole up here. We're gonna be inserting a nut plate up...or a bolt plate up there in a minute. But right now, let's take this out. We're gonna use a 17-millimeter socket. And go ahead and repeat this on the other side. All right, guys. Now in your hardware kit, you're gonna have four of these bolt plates. Go ahead and grab one of them as well as one of these square plastic retaining pieces. We're gonna just thread this on a couple of threads, not all the way down just yet. And this hole I pointed out up on the frame. We're gonna drop this bolt plate in there. And then once it's in there, we cinch down this retaining plastic piece to kind of hold it in place until we get the bracket up on there. Right now, I'm just kind of threading this plastic piece down as far as I can. Sometimes it may not want to thread on you, in which case just kind of pull on it a little bit.All right, guys, now you have two brackets in your kit for mounting on the underside here and they are stamped with a letter D and a letter P obviously P is for passenger side, which is where we're working. So, I have that one in my hand right now, and I'm just gonna kind of slide it up on our bolt plate there and then grab a washer, lock washer, and a nut. And we'll get those started by hand right now. And then you can grab your factory bolt that we took out on the underside here, reinsert that we're just gonna leave these finger tight for right now. We're gonna tighten everything up, making sure we have some good fitment. Once we start getting more of these pieces put together. Right now, after you've mounted the driver's side bracket on the front of the truck, guys, go ahead and grab another bolt plate. There's a crossmember and I'm pointing, touching on right here that is in front of your radiator. There are holes on the underside, one on each side, and feed this bolt plate in from behind and let it drop into this hole.Like I said, there's only two holes on the underside of this cross member. You're not gonna be in doubt as to where you're gonna put this in place. It's pretty self-explanatory when you take a look at your truck, go ahead and do that on the driver's side as well. Right now that you have both of those bolt plates dropped into place on that crossmember in front of the radiator. We're gonna grab these brackets out of the kit. Again, they're gonna be stamped with a letter P and a letter D we're gonna use the passenger side one because that's where we're working. We're gonna attach these to that bolt plate in there. You're gonna want this part that has the angle down end. That's gonna be outside of the truck and we're gonna fish this in through the opening in the grille and then have a washer, lock washer, and a nut handy. And once we get that in there, we'll get to get this over the bolt and then just cinch it into place, finger tight for now. And then go ahead and repeat this on the driver's side guys.Right now at this step, we brought the truck back down. I'm gonna grab a friend here in a second. He's gonna help me lift the grille guard into place. We're gonna rest it on top of these brackets. And then we're gonna start. Go ahead and grab the Allen socket, button-head bolts, and a couple of washers, a lock washer, and a nut. And we're gonna be threading these button-head bolts through the outside, into the holes and we'll get that started like that. Just kind of finger tight. So, it's resting up there and then we'll work from the bottom with the brackets and more hardware down below. All right, guys. Now we're gonna go ahead. I'm supporting the grille guard here. Don't want it resting too much on these brackets up top. They're not meant to be load-bearing. Okay. I'm just gonna get these started up on here. Not tightening them up just yet because we're gonna do the other side. Once we make sure everything fits up nicely, then we'll tighten everything down. Let's go ahead and grab some hardware and finish up on your passenger side. All right guys. Now we're gonna tighten up these bolts down below here on the mounting brackets. They're 16 millimeters on both the nut and the bolt side. Repeat that on the passenger side. Now to tighten this up here, again, we're using a 16-millimeter wrench on the nut and then grab a 6-millimeter Allen socket. Repeat that on the passenger side as well. All right, now we're gonna tighten up these ones here in the bottom guys. This factory bolt here is a 17-millimeter and this one up top here from the kit is a 16. We already have it finger tight and repeat this on the driver's side. All right now to get at this one from the underside, I've popped on a extension bar and I'm using a 16-millimeter socket to tighten this one up. If you remember, this is the bolt on the nut plate, on the crossmember in front of your radiator. And then repeat that on the driver's side. All right. So, that wraps up this review and install of this grille guard in black for all 2016 and later Toyota Tacomas. And of course, for all tHey guys, I'm Eric with Extreme Terrain [SP].
