Hey, guys. Adam here with extremeterrain.com. And today, we're taking a quick look at and installing the Alterum lockbox under seat storage unit available for the '05 and newer Tacoma double cabs. You should be checking this out if you're looking to replace your factory plastic under seat storage that isn't lockable with a set that is pretty much an identical lockbox but made of a steel construction with really secure hinges and double locking mechanisms. So this is going to be a great way to store some valuable goods that you don't want anybody to have access to if they were to, say, break into your truck. The plastic unit does lock with a turning mechanism, but it's not locked in key, so anybody can just turn it and open it. Not the case here. You have two secure locking mechanisms that latch in underneath where that steel is. And of course, you can pop it open and you have access to your goods underneath. Now, the nice thing about this is it utilizes basically the same storage space and available area that your factory one does. It has that same cutout for your bottle jack gear, so you don't even have to take the bottle jack out, and you're not sacrificing that storage space. It has a cutout on the bottom of the unit, so that comes straight through. And then you, of course, have that hump in the middle between the seats and then more storage on the other side there. Now, again, same, almost identical amount of space inside here, maybe just a hair bigger. Really the key selling points here are going to be the locking mechanism and the steel construction so it can't be easily broken into. Now, the nice thing about the locking mechanism here is this allows you to use this as a gun safe. You obviously could not use your factory one as a gun safe, so this is really going to be good to store some of those higher valued items. Now, the price tag comes in right around 550 bucks. It is a pretty steep price tag to pay, but it's definitely useful for guys looking for that extra security that is pretty difficult to find in this category, especially with something that fits directly into the factory unit without really heavily modifying it.All right, operating this is super easy. You're gonna pop your seats up, and you can access the longer one, or you can pop open both to access both. You can pop up the smaller seat just to access the smaller one. That one we have unlocked here. If you wanted to access that, you can. Or you can grab your key, unlock it, pop it open, access your bottle jack, all the storage items, throw it back down. Obviously, you can lock that, pull your key out, and then you can shut your seats. Now, this does require you to drill out a couple of the holes. The factory push pin clips that are holding the plastic unit are already there. Those holes are already there. You're just going to drill them out to be a little bit bigger on the backside. So five of the nine holes you have to make bigger. With that said, it beefs up the difficulty to two out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter. It's gonna take you about an hour from start to finish. It is super simple. I'll walk you through the install process. So let's get started.Tools used in the install include an impact gun, a drill, panel removal tool, 29/64" drill bit, 8-millimeter deep socket, and a 5/32 hex socket. Our first step here, we're gonna pop our backseats up going this way. Same thing on both sides. Now, we have the factory under seat storage here, and what you're gonna do is pop this guy open on both sides. And we're gonna remove the nine plastic push pin clips all around so we can pop the whole thing out and set that aside. So grab a panel removal tool and start prying. All right, next up, we can take our entire under seat storage out here. You're just gonna lift straight up. All right. There is one retainer strap underneath here, so I'm just gonna pop that guy out just like that. We can set this aside.Next up, we have to take our 29/64" drill bit and drill out the 5 holes on the rear wall. Now, that's this side here facing the truck bed. On this side, we had four holes. On this side, we have five. We're only drilling out these five. I've already taken care of the one closest to me, so we're just gonna knock out the other four. All right, next up, we're gonna be putting our jack nuts into those holes. Now, these little tools are basically an alternative to rivnuts without requiring any rivnut-specific tool. Basically, what we're gonna be using is this jack nut wrench and the Allen key bolts here. Then we're gonna put the jack nut in the hole we just drilled out. It's a little snug. I have to rotate it to give that guy a seat. Just like that. Next, we're gonna put our bolt through the jack nut wrench, and we're gonna tighten this down by hand. Take your 5/32 hex socket, and we're gonna tighten down the bolt. And that's gonna basically crush the nut up into this little hole here. So we're gonna tighten this down, and then we're gonna loosen it back up. So now, that jack nut is crushed up into the hole, and the threads are visible there, so we can tighten something down to it. So we're gonna repeat that for each one of these holes. All right, continue on with the rest of them. All right, repeat that for the next two.All right, next up, we're gonna drop our lockbox in place, and now we actually have to remove the lids in order to bolt down the actual base of it. So you wanna open this up, and if it's locked, grab the keys and unlock it. There are two eight-millimeters on the long one, on each end, and then the same thing for the smaller one. So grab your 8 socket and get those off. It's okay if these bolts fall inside. You just wanna make sure you have an eye on them. All right, now, we can remove the lid, just like this. I'm just gonna set it up here. And then we can have access to this and bolt it down. All right, next up, do the same thing with the other lid.All right, let's pull this guy out one more time and set up the other end or the front end here. So let's pull this out.Next up, we're gonna be putting these U-nut clips right on the four open holes toward the front side. We're going this way here. And that's gonna put a threaded insert into those holes. All right, now, we can drop this thing in here for good.Take all of the bolts included in the kit and tighten them down to each one of the holes before putting your lid back on. All right, now, we can take those hex bolts, put them through, and tighten them down.Next, we can throw our lids back on.All right, grab your 8 socket and tighten down the nuts once they're on.All right, shut it, make sure that fits properly. Repeat that on the other lid.All right, you can shut this guy, and you're good to go.That's gonna wrap up my review and install for the Alterum locking under seat storage unit for the '05 and newer double cab Tacoma.
