    Review & Install Video

This is my review of the Barricade roof rack, fitting your four-door 2007 and up JK. JKs had notoriously small interiors and there isn't a lot of cargo space, so if you're somebody who wants to be able to haul more gear, a roof rack like this might be a nice option. This roof rack isn't going to be nearly expensive as some of the top roof racks on the market, however, it's also going to be a little less sleek-looking, and you won't be able to get quite as many accessories that bolt right onto it. If you're looking for one of those other racks, we do have Gobi and a few other brands on the site, but if you're looking for one of the less expensive racks that'll still get the job done, this is a good one to take a look at. This rack is built from 2-inch round tubing that is 0.12-inch wall thickness, so you're going to have enough strength to carry up to 350 pounds up on the rack. The whole thing is covered in a textured black powder coat finish, which will match a lot of other off-road accessories, and also your factory black plastic accents on your Jeep. The rack will mount to the windshield hinges in the front, and either to the frame or to the body in the rear, so there isn't any drilling necessary. If you have an aftermarket bumper, I would recommend using the frame mounts. If you have a factory bumper that you're not willing to chop up, you will have to use the body mounts, which do require some drilling into the body. Once you have the rack installed, you'll be able to raise and lower your soft top by just removing the crossbars of the rack. However, you will not be able to install and uninstall your hard top with the rack in place. Speaking of those removable crossbars, those are attached with large plastic thumbscrews, which make it very easy to remove and reinstall the crossbars, however, sometimes those thumbscrews like to strip out, so a lot of people have been replacing them with a stainless steel wingnut setup, which is going to be a lot stronger and hold up a lot better, but still not require the use of any tools to get the crossbars on and off. This roof rack installs onto your Jeep really easily. It's designed to be a bolt-on installation, unless you have a factory rear bumper that you're not wiling to cut up. In that case, you have to use the body mounts in the rear of the rack instead of the frame mounts, and they do require you to drill into the body. Those holes are going to be very visible if you were ever to remove the rack, so I definitely recommend using the frame mounts instead. If you have a factory rear bumper that you like, you can cut a hole in it or cut the ends off of it in order to use those frame mounts, and those of you with an aftermarket rear bumper won't have to worry about it. You'll be able to use those frame mounts and not drill the body without a problem. If you do end up using the body mounts, the installation becomes a little bit more difficult because of the drilling you have to do. To start this installation, you'll start at the front of the Jeep and remove the four bolts in the windshield hinge to allow you to mount these two plates up on the hinges. You'll start on one side, then put the crossbar across the front, which also has your light mount tabs on it, and finally move along to the other side of the windshield hinge. From there, you have the bars that move toward the back of the Jeep, and finally, the bars that attach to the back of the Jeep down to the mounts. At the same time that you're installing those, you'll install the crossbar across the back center of the Jeep, and finally the mounts, whether you're using the body mounts or the frame mounts. After you have everything installed, you can go through and tighten down all the bolts. As far as tools go for this installation, you won't need any specialty tools, however, you will need a good set of Torx bits, to remove the factory Torx bolts that are in your windshield hinge. As I mentioned before, this rack is toward the bottom of the price range as far as roof racks are concerned, and really, the only reason for that is, one, that this isn't as sleek and stylish-looking as some of the more expensive racks, but also, it doesn't have all of the bolt-on accessories available for some of the other more well-known racks on the market. For instance, the Gobi racks that we offer have everything from kayak and bike mounts to shovel and high-lift jack mounts. You could certainly get all of those accessories bolted onto this roof rack, however, they're going to require some modification and it's not going to be quite as simple. So, if you're looking for an inexpensive rack, you like the way that this one looks, and you don't need a lot of those bolt-on accessories, I would definitely recommend taking a look at this one. If you want a rack that's a little bit more sleek and stylish, and has a lot more easy-to-add accessory mounts, then we certainly have those options, as well, for a little bit more money. So, whether you have a two-door or four-door JK, and you're looking for a little bit of additional cargo space, a roof rack is a really nice option. Assuming you don't have any height restrictions, this rack will hold 350 pounds of additional cargo, and as long as you like the look, this rack will save you a lot of money over those top brands on the market. So, that's my review of the Barricade roof rack, fitting all 2007 and up JKs, that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.

What rear bumpers does Extreme Terrain sell that will allow this Barricade 07-17 Wrangler JK 2-Door Roof Rack to be mounted to the frame (no drill) *and* also allow a towing hitch to be mounted? Please provide some links.

    • Thank you for your question! The Barricade Roof Rack's bolt on application will work with any rear bumper that does not wrap around the sides of the Jeep. Like the: Body Armor 4x4 Rear Bumper (07-17 Wrangler JK) found here: http://www.extremeterrain.com/body-armor-rear-bumper-jk-jk2394.html. The Body Armor rear bumper allows the reuse of a factory style hitch.

Do you sell any roof racks that do NOT require drilling? I'm not real keen on drilling into the body of my new Jeep. I am correct that this one does require drilling, right?

    • This will indeed require drilling into the rubber bumper as described in greater detail and demonstrated here in the install guide: https://www.extremeterrain.com/barricade-roof-rack-black-jk-j100173-cust-install.html

I have a 2016 2 door rubicon, and the page says in one place that it "excludes rubicons" and in the "will it fit my vehicle" section it says it will. So why the contradiction, and what is different in body style of a rubicon vs a sport, as I have never heard of such a thing before.

    • I apologize for the confusion! This Barricade Roof Rack will not fit the 4-door Rubicon models due to being too short. However it will fit all 2-door JK models, including your 2016 2-door Rubicon!

would this roof rack fit with having a Smittybilt SRC Gen2 Rear Bumper rear?

    • Hello, although we haven't test fitted the Roof Rack with that bumper, from our experience, it seems that there will be enough room between the tube and the body to be able to run the support bar through there for the Rack.

Can you please clarify the modification needed to install the frame mount with a factory bumper. I am planning on using this rack for a roof top tent (approx. 50-75lbs) the weight rating of this roof rack says 300lbs, my question is that rating for "driving with weight" or "loaded weight", asking due to the fact it will have the tent and two adults sleeping in the tent so the combined weight will be approx.. 350-400lbs which is greater that the listed capacity. most Roof rack are rated around the 300lbs limit which would not allow for a tent AND occupants sleeping in the tent (2 persons) 1 answer

      Good product for the money.

Very functional roof rack that doesn't require a second mortgage. Solid, sturdy and strong with good finish. Squeaked at each joint so I found a friend who spot welded all joints and it is now quiet going down the road. You get at least what you paid for.

      Perfect

This beast of a rack is super nice for the money, but... To start off this is the second/third barricade rack I’ve owned and couldn’t be happier. It’s a great item for the money. I have one on my 97TJ, had one on my 15JKU and just put one on my 17JKUR. The only down side with this rack is the wind noise. That is the only complaint that I have. The hard top makes the noise more bearable most definitely but with the soft top it’s quite loud. Other than that I can’t think of any other reason why you shouldn’t save the extra cash and get this rack

      Coolest Rack on the Road

This installation is a mall project, so allow an afternoon. The rear bumper, not the lame stock bumper, prevents me from mounting to the frame. I have to use the body mount on my Rubi. I had this rack on my Sahara 2-door and loved it. I will install on the Rubi shortly.

      Great rack for the price

End result, I really like the rack and think it is great for the price. Understand that the installation instructions are poorly but installation is simple. Also, I have an aftermarket bumper, XRC Atlas and it had to be cut/modified to mount the rack to the frame. Luckily, I'm a welder and a grinder made quick work of the bumper with very little loss to aesthetics. All in all I recommend it for all us Jeepers who want to have money for other stuff for your Jeep!

Review from Barricade Roof Rack - Textured Black (07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK 2 Door)

Worst Install due to after market bumper

I Rate this product 1 star for a couple of reasons. When installing the rack, make sure to separate the rack by drivers side and passenger side. This May seem simple but the top horizontal bar that connects everything definitely makes a difference. There was no labels that allowed me to differentiate anything. Second, when installing the plate that connected to the rear bumper, we noticed that the plates that were given did not match up. It took us 2 hours to figure out a solution so that we could install it properly. Third, there were multiple scratches and dings on the every part. I am extremely disappointed in this product especially for the price. Better directions are needed, better labeling system should be provided and better shipping methods and wrapping should be instilled. Overall I would not buy this again and will be contacting the company. Looks great but not worth the poor directions and installation time. 1 hour became 4 hours. Horrible product

      Problems

Product looks good sitting on ground. The problems is that the first shipment had no nuts, bolts or instructions. They said to just repack and ship it back. It took me two hrs to rebox and had to buy tape used to pack the rack properly. The boxes weight over 80 lbs each. All because they couldn’t send me the nuts and bolt kit. When I good the send rack I had the same problem, no nuts , bolts or instruction. This time they are trying to send me the nuts and bolts. Still waiting. Should be zero stars since I cannot use the rack without the nuts and bolts.

      Very nice!

I was extremely impressed with the design and strength of this rack. Easy to assemble, I put it together on the floor first to verify which bolts went where. Total time (including assembling on the floor, taking apart, reassembling on the Jeep) was about 2 hrs 10 min by myself. Holds my rooftop tent very well. Material was thick enough, I was able to drill and tap for my limb risers to attach at the highest point.

Insanely Good Rack for price (and soft top access)

I’ve been searching for months for a roof rack that allows soft top functionality. I first went with Kargo Master brand at twice the price. That rack was horrible - it came with no packaging protection whatsoever - just bars in a box. Powder coat was chipped and it didn’t fit my A-pillars well. Scratched the heck out of my paint and came with no paint protection. Luckily ET took it as a return with no issue - awesome. Next week this rack came, it was beautifully packaged with tons of protection for each piece. Extra bolts as well for plenty of options to mount. There’s no powder coat chips and it’s very sturdy. Super easy install - I just cut the ends of my factory bumper off. If installing with factory bumper, remove it first, cut the ends, and reinstall with just the 2 bolts under your spare tire carrier. Basically you have to turn your factory bumper into a stubby bumper. Also, pack grease or silicone on every piece before fitting. I put the 4 tab light bar in the rear and 2 up front and faced them both rear. Hardly any wind buffeting! I have not felt the need to find a wind deflector yet. Excellent purchase I’m very impressed.

Good Quality and fit, but noisy

It was easy to install, and the quality seems good. I like how it looks and it seems sturdy. The only complaints would be the amount of added wind resistance / noise that it produces and that the manufacturer does not offer wind fairing options.

Review from Barricade Roof Rack - Textured Black (07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK 2 Door)

      Nice Rack

The rack arrived quickly and undamaged, the bars are individually wrapped up to prevent anything from happening to them so I reccomend organizing everything before installing. The rack is sturdy and feels like quality. It's just a shame that the instructions are useless. Same with the plastic screws for the crossbars. I'm not using those. There is some wind noise above 40mph. I have a hardtop and I don't really mind it. The rack has a nice paint job and it won't scratch off easily. I ran into a few problems: First, I have a mirror relocation kit on my jeep, it moves the mirrors to the windshield frame and I had to cut the mirror mount which was easy. Then I went to the hardware store to buy some longer bolts to fit through the now 2 plates going onto the winshield frame. If you have mirror kits you'll need new bolts as the ones in the jeep aren't long enough to get all the way through. Second, the rear bumper mount bolts included with the rack are junk, and the stock bolts are too big to fit through the mounting holes that the rack comes with. Going down to the hardware store, nothing that will fit in the holes will fit through the mount for the rack. I almost decided to drill in the body for this issue. I still do not have a fix for this. I just reccomend going to the hardware store and buying some grade 8 stuff for this rack. I don't trust the included bolts enough.
