    Review & Installation Video

This is my review of the Barricade roof rack, fitting your four-door 2007 and up JK. JKs had notoriously small interiors and there isn't a lot of cargo space, so if you're somebody who wants to be able to haul more gear, a roof rack like this might be a nice option. This roof rack isn't going to be nearly expensive as some of the top roof racks on the market, however, it's also going to be a little less sleek-looking, and you won't be able to get quite as many accessories that bolt right onto it. If you're looking for one of those other racks, we do have Gobi and a few other brands on the site, but if you're looking for one of the less expensive racks that'll still get the job done, this is a good one to take a look at. This rack is built from 2-inch round tubing that is 0.12-inch wall thickness, so you're going to have enough strength to carry up to 350 pounds up on the rack. The whole thing is covered in a textured black powder coat finish, which will match a lot of other off-road accessories, and also your factory black plastic accents on your Jeep. The rack will mount to the windshield hinges in the front, and either to the frame or to the body in the rear, so there isn't any drilling necessary. If you have an aftermarket bumper, I would recommend using the frame mounts. If you have a factory bumper that you're not willing to chop up, you will have to use the body mounts, which do require some drilling into the body. Once you have the rack installed, you'll be able to raise and lower your soft top by just removing the crossbars of the rack. However, you will not be able to install and uninstall your hard top with the rack in place. Speaking of those removable crossbars, those are attached with large plastic thumbscrews, which make it very easy to remove and reinstall the crossbars, however, sometimes those thumbscrews like to strip out, so a lot of people have been replacing them with a stainless steel wingnut setup, which is going to be a lot stronger and hold up a lot better, but still not require the use of any tools to get the crossbars on and off. This roof rack installs onto your Jeep really easily. It's designed to be a bolt-on installation, unless you have a factory rear bumper that you're not wiling to cut up. In that case, you have to use the body mounts in the rear of the rack instead of the frame mounts, and they do require you to drill into the body. Those holes are going to be very visible if you were ever to remove the rack, so I definitely recommend using the frame mounts instead. If you have a factory rear bumper that you like, you can cut a hole in it or cut the ends off of it in order to use those frame mounts, and those of you with an aftermarket rear bumper won't have to worry about it. You'll be able to use those frame mounts and not drill the body without a problem. If you do end up using the body mounts, the installation becomes a little bit more difficult because of the drilling you have to do. To start this installation, you'll start at the front of the Jeep and remove the four bolts in the windshield hinge to allow you to mount these two plates up on the hinges. You'll start on one side, then put the crossbar across the front, which also has your light mount tabs on it, and finally move along to the other side of the windshield hinge. From there, you have the bars that move toward the back of the Jeep, and finally, the bars that attach to the back of the Jeep down to the mounts. At the same time that you're installing those, you'll install the crossbar across the back center of the Jeep, and finally the mounts, whether you're using the body mounts or the frame mounts. After you have everything installed, you can go through and tighten down all the bolts. As far as tools go for this installation, you won't need any specialty tools, however, you will need a good set of Torx bits, to remove the factory Torx bolts that are in your windshield hinge. As I mentioned before, this rack is toward the bottom of the price range as far as roof racks are concerned, and really, the only reason for that is, one, that this isn't as sleek and stylish-looking as some of the more expensive racks, but also, it doesn't have all of the bolt-on accessories available for some of the other more well-known racks on the market. For instance, the Gobi racks that we offer have everything from kayak and bike mounts to shovel and high-lift jack mounts. You could certainly get all of those accessories bolted onto this roof rack, however, they're going to require some modification and it's not going to be quite as simple. So, if you're looking for an inexpensive rack, you like the way that this one looks, and you don't need a lot of those bolt-on accessories, I would definitely recommend taking a look at this one. If you want a rack that's a little bit more sleek and stylish, and has a lot more easy-to-add accessory mounts, then we certainly have those options, as well, for a little bit more money. So, whether you have a two-door or four-door JK, and you're looking for a little bit of additional cargo space, a roof rack is a really nice option. Assuming you don't have any height restrictions, this rack will hold 350 pounds of additional cargo, and as long as you like the look, this rack will save you a lot of money over those top brands on the market. So, that's my review of the Barricade roof rack, fitting all 2007 and up JKs, that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.

I have a 2016 2 door rubicon, and the page says in one place that it "excludes rubicons" and in the "will it fit my vehicle" section it says it will. So why the contradiction, and what is different in body style of a rubicon vs a sport, as I have never heard of such a thing before.

    shane

    • I apologize for the confusion! This Barricade Roof Rack will not fit the 4-door Rubicon models due to being too short. However it will fit all 2-door JK models, including your 2016 2-door Rubicon!

Can you please clarify the modification needed to install the frame mount with a factory bumper. Can one cut, say, a 2 1/2" hole with a holesaw through the bumper and feed the pipe through it from inside out or must one cut off the rear corners of the bumper (there is no obvious place to do that). Do you have any photos of a frame mount with factory bumper? If I go to the optional side mount, is it secured to some internal frame member or just the sheet metal? Thank you.

    BruceB

    • Use of the Barricade Roof Rack with a stock bumper and the frame mount by cutting a hole in the bumper on each side, though this will need to be larger than the tube to allow you to feed the tube through the hole with its bends. The body mount will secure to a reinforced section of the body but does still attach to sheet metal.

would this roof rack fit with having a Smittybilt SRC Gen2 Rear Bumper rear?

    Ray

    • Hello, although we haven't test fitted the Roof Rack with that bumper, from our experience, it seems that there will be enough room between the tube and the body to be able to run the support bar through there for the Rack.

What rear bumpers does Extreme Terrain sell that will allow this Barricade 07-17 Wrangler JK 2-Door Roof Rack to be mounted to the frame (no drill) *and* also allow a towing hitch to be mounted? Please provide some links.

    LouisG

    • Thank you for your question! The Barricade Roof Rack's bolt on application will work with any rear bumper that does not wrap around the sides of the Jeep. Like the: Body Armor 4x4 Rear Bumper (07-17 Wrangler JK) found here: http://www.extremeterrain.com/body-armor-rear-bumper-jk-jk2394.html. The Body Armor rear bumper allows the reuse of a factory style hitch.

Review from Barricade Roof Rack - Textured Black (07-18 Wrangler JK 2 Door)

      Great product - with suggestions

I assembled this rack by myself in about 2 hours. It looks great is definitely a quality product. I did have some trouble. First, the manufacturer forgot to include instructions. Fortunately, I was able to download the manual from the extreme terrain website. The screws came in two bags and nothing was identified by size. This slows the assembly a lot. The tubes were individually wrapped in protective plastic and they arrived without a scratch. The box was beat up too. Barricades provides hardware and tubes to attach the rack to the frame and back outsides of the jeep body. Note well, the rack can not be attached to the rear frame with the 2012 Jeep original bumper. Frame assembly can only occur with an after market bumper. I attached my rack to the body of the jeep, this requires drilling 4 holes. The holes are easy to drill, but there is a slight trick to make sure your holes are in the right place. Once you have assembled the rear tubular frame make sure you use the external bottom part of the frame as your template. I placed masking tape on the outside of the jeep so it was easier to identify the center of my holes. After marking the centers, drill a starter hole and then follow with the larger hole. Before I forget, try to push the tubes to the side so you do not have to remove the bottom rack support. This guarantees your holes will remain aligned. The other tricky part of the assembly is removing your rear lights to gain access to the inside behind the lights. This is where you attach a supplied reinforcement plate to keep the rack solidly attached to the body. It is tight work space , but it works perfectly. Suggestions, 1. add installation directions with the box. 2. There are gaskets to keep the frame from scratching the body of your jeep. I recommend adding a small amount of silicone around the holes on the jeep body. This will prevent water from leaking in there. 3. Lastly, the cross frame members come with plastic knobs to keep them attached to the outer frame. These plastic knobs feel cheap and I will use lock washers to keep my cross members attached. If a knob breaks I can't imagine what will happen to any cargo up there. I highly recommend the product on a scale of 0 to 100, I give it a 90. If the instructions were included I would raise the score to 95. If the plastic knobs were replaced with something more solid the score would be 100.

      Love it!

Love the roof rack, it's solid. However there was no directions or instructions to know which screw goes where and etc. thought it would have something that explains stuff with the amount it cost. Also when I bought it they said it would fit my jeep wrangler 2010 rubicon edition, it does except I had to take off my bumper.. :( now I'm driving bumper less till I have more money! Oh well overall it is a good product!

      Rugged but noisy

Great quality and looks great! Will definitely do the job. Only issue is the noise with the soft top...wind tunnel loud. No whistling, more of a vibration. Took off cross bars until needed which helped some. If anyone has a fix...deflector, etc please let me know.

      substantial worthwhile investment

Very solid and not flimsy. Well crafted and the removable bars allows me to fold the top back to enjoy the fresh air. The 350Lbs is light for construction materials, but you just have to make more trips. Worthwhile and easy to install - however, you have to have an AFTERMARKET REAR BUMPER for correct body attachment. Cost went up accordingly.

heavy duty, good fit, looks great

Rack is easy to install. Did it by myself. Kit comes with only one rear plate for attachment of upright to frame. Should have two. Plastic knobs for top bars are junk. Don't even bother using them. The nuts inside break loose of knob without much torque. I replaced a lot of the bolts and nuts with stainless. Looks and fits just like the Body Armor rack but with more horizontal bars and less money. finish is great and heavy wall round tubes are sturdy. Grab it and move it, the whole jeep rocks. You have to remove the top bars to get the T-tops off. I used stainless wing nuts for them. Called Extreme and they sent more hardware immediately to get the extra plate.

Looks great, great function, ok fit

Some of the holes on the front don't line up perfect on my 2014 2 door, also a little disappointed you can't use the factory rear tow hook with all 3 bolts in place or the factory bumper without modification. Other then that it is great! Sturdy construction, great tough textured paint, has mounting tabs for lighting, quick detach spin knobs for the middle support rods so you can fold down the top.

      Barricade Roof Rack

The install was a bit of a pain to do by yourself or with out an extra arm growing out of your belly button. The directions I just wadded up and tossed in the circular file and down loaded the on line version. The knobs on the rails are pretty much useless since they won't stay tight and have a tendency to disappear. I like the rack and felt it was worth the money spent. The noise factor is another issue which I remedied some what by taking the front two cross rails off.

Funny thing is the night I bought it for $175 on this site next day I check price again and it was adjusted back up to $330 or so haha. Got lucky but still amazing rack!

      Barricade roof rack

This product came better packed than most of the aircraft parts shipped. As an aircraft mechanic I have some observations. the tubular parts are great, the attach mechanisms are terrible. the holes are drilled way oversized and when you put them together with the supplied alan head bolts you cant torque them enough to stop the joints from moving. when you shake it or drive it makes such a racket that if this was not fixable I would return it. What I did was to over drill the rear (attach to body tube) bolt holes to 1/2 inch and used a lock nut with two wide area washers. Next I replaced all the alan head bolts with hex head and torqued them down so the joints didn't move at all ( also using lock nuts and two washers) I am installing a rear cargo rack and replaced the cross bar bolts also. With the proper parts this item would warrant a "5" star rating. Also the long side tubes need to be marked right and left and indicate front. If the holes were drilled same size it would make it much easier to stop from rattling. Otherwise, great product.

      Well built Roof Rack

Pro-This rack is heavy duty and with it mounted to the frame it gives excellent protection, looks good too. I was able to install this by myself but it would be nice to have help. The rack is heavy and you will notice your Jeep handles different. I had no rattles or squeaks with rack and it rode well. Cons - As with all racks there is wind noise and much worse with cross rails installed. It makes the soft top bounce like a drum. I am planning a trip from Fl. to Moab UT and the wind noise would spoil the trip. For the time being I have removed the rack.

Review from Barricade Roof Rack - Textured Black (07-18 Wrangler JK 2 Door)

Sturdy, solid and good looking with a purpose

Just like the title says. I purchased this rack with main intend of use with a roof top tent. Im 6'2" 240lbs and when this rack is installed I can do pull ups on it, that's how solid it is, I mounted mine via the body which requires drilling. Zero instructions in the box so I downloaded and printed my online. Like some others that have mentioned, my rack also does create some hum wind buffering noise at 40mph It's a bit anoying but its a Jeep so oh-well. The knobs that hold the cross bars that so many people had issues with stripping, I didn't have that isdue. Perhaps Barricade upgraded the hardware or perhaps it's just because I didn't hulk down on them as tight as others when tightening them. I'm not mechanically inclined nor do I own very many shop tools so it took me and my buddy about 4 hours at a slow pace to install. Looking forward to putting a rooftop tent on it.

Easy bolt on, the plastic knobs for the cross bars are a joke. The front bar sets up a noisy wind harmonic that causes the soft top to viabrate.
