    Review & Install Video

This is my review of the Barricade roof rack, fitting your four-door 2007 and up JK. JKs had notoriously small interiors and there isn't a lot of cargo space, so if you're somebody who wants to be able to haul more gear, a roof rack like this might be a nice option. This roof rack isn't going to be nearly expensive as some of the top roof racks on the market, however, it's also going to be a little less sleek-looking, and you won't be able to get quite as many accessories that bolt right onto it. If you're looking for one of those other racks, we do have Gobi and a few other brands on the site, but if you're looking for one of the less expensive racks that'll still get the job done, this is a good one to take a look at. This rack is built from 2-inch round tubing that is 0.12-inch wall thickness, so you're going to have enough strength to carry up to 350 pounds up on the rack. The whole thing is covered in a textured black powder coat finish, which will match a lot of other off-road accessories, and also your factory black plastic accents on your Jeep. The rack will mount to the windshield hinges in the front, and either to the frame or to the body in the rear, so there isn't any drilling necessary. If you have an aftermarket bumper, I would recommend using the frame mounts. If you have a factory bumper that you're not willing to chop up, you will have to use the body mounts, which do require some drilling into the body. Once you have the rack installed, you'll be able to raise and lower your soft top by just removing the crossbars of the rack. However, you will not be able to install and uninstall your hard top with the rack in place. Speaking of those removable crossbars, those are attached with large plastic thumbscrews, which make it very easy to remove and reinstall the crossbars, however, sometimes those thumbscrews like to strip out, so a lot of people have been replacing them with a stainless steel wingnut setup, which is going to be a lot stronger and hold up a lot better, but still not require the use of any tools to get the crossbars on and off. This roof rack installs onto your Jeep really easily. It's designed to be a bolt-on installation, unless you have a factory rear bumper that you're not wiling to cut up. In that case, you have to use the body mounts in the rear of the rack instead of the frame mounts, and they do require you to drill into the body. Those holes are going to be very visible if you were ever to remove the rack, so I definitely recommend using the frame mounts instead. If you have a factory rear bumper that you like, you can cut a hole in it or cut the ends off of it in order to use those frame mounts, and those of you with an aftermarket rear bumper won't have to worry about it. You'll be able to use those frame mounts and not drill the body without a problem. If you do end up using the body mounts, the installation becomes a little bit more difficult because of the drilling you have to do. To start this installation, you'll start at the front of the Jeep and remove the four bolts in the windshield hinge to allow you to mount these two plates up on the hinges. You'll start on one side, then put the crossbar across the front, which also has your light mount tabs on it, and finally move along to the other side of the windshield hinge. From there, you have the bars that move toward the back of the Jeep, and finally, the bars that attach to the back of the Jeep down to the mounts. At the same time that you're installing those, you'll install the crossbar across the back center of the Jeep, and finally the mounts, whether you're using the body mounts or the frame mounts. After you have everything installed, you can go through and tighten down all the bolts. As far as tools go for this installation, you won't need any specialty tools, however, you will need a good set of Torx bits, to remove the factory Torx bolts that are in your windshield hinge. As I mentioned before, this rack is toward the bottom of the price range as far as roof racks are concerned, and really, the only reason for that is, one, that this isn't as sleek and stylish-looking as some of the more expensive racks, but also, it doesn't have all of the bolt-on accessories available for some of the other more well-known racks on the market. For instance, the Gobi racks that we offer have everything from kayak and bike mounts to shovel and high-lift jack mounts. You could certainly get all of those accessories bolted onto this roof rack, however, they're going to require some modification and it's not going to be quite as simple. So, if you're looking for an inexpensive rack, you like the way that this one looks, and you don't need a lot of those bolt-on accessories, I would definitely recommend taking a look at this one. If you want a rack that's a little bit more sleek and stylish, and has a lot more easy-to-add accessory mounts, then we certainly have those options, as well, for a little bit more money. So, whether you have a two-door or four-door JK, and you're looking for a little bit of additional cargo space, a roof rack is a really nice option. Assuming you don't have any height restrictions, this rack will hold 350 pounds of additional cargo, and as long as you like the look, this rack will save you a lot of money over those top brands on the market. So, that's my review of the Barricade roof rack, fitting all 2007 and up JKs, that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.

Do you sell any roof racks that do NOT require drilling? I'm not real keen on drilling into the body of my new Jeep. I am correct that this one does require drilling, right?

    • This will indeed require drilling into the rubber bumper as described in greater detail and demonstrated here in the install guide: https://www.extremeterrain.com/barricade-roof-rack-black-jk-j100173-cust-install.html

Can you please clarify the modification needed to install the frame mount with a factory bumper. Can one cut, say, a 2 1/2" hole with a holesaw through the bumper and feed the pipe through it from inside out or must one cut off the rear corners of the bumper (there is no obvious place to do that). Do you have any photos of a frame mount with factory bumper? If I go to the optional side mount, is it secured to some internal frame member or just the sheet metal? Thank you.

    • Use of the Barricade Roof Rack with a stock bumper and the frame mount by cutting a hole in the bumper on each side, though this will need to be larger than the tube to allow you to feed the tube through the hole with its bends. The body mount will secure to a reinforced section of the body but does still attach to sheet metal.

I have a 2016 2 door rubicon, and the page says in one place that it "excludes rubicons" and in the "will it fit my vehicle" section it says it will. So why the contradiction, and what is different in body style of a rubicon vs a sport, as I have never heard of such a thing before.

    • I apologize for the confusion! This Barricade Roof Rack will not fit the 4-door Rubicon models due to being too short. However it will fit all 2-door JK models, including your 2016 2-door Rubicon!

What rear bumpers does Extreme Terrain sell that will allow this Barricade 07-17 Wrangler JK 2-Door Roof Rack to be mounted to the frame (no drill) *and* also allow a towing hitch to be mounted? Please provide some links.

    • Thank you for your question! The Barricade Roof Rack's bolt on application will work with any rear bumper that does not wrap around the sides of the Jeep. Like the: Body Armor 4x4 Rear Bumper (07-17 Wrangler JK) found here: http://www.extremeterrain.com/body-armor-rear-bumper-jk-jk2394.html. The Body Armor rear bumper allows the reuse of a factory style hitch.

would this roof rack fit with having a Smittybilt SRC Gen2 Rear Bumper rear?

    • Hello, although we haven't test fitted the Roof Rack with that bumper, from our experience, it seems that there will be enough room between the tube and the body to be able to run the support bar through there for the Rack.

Review from Barricade Roof Rack - Textured Black (07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK 2 Door)

      Good rack--difficult install

The rack is solid--does just as advertised; however, the install was pretty difficult on my '18 JK. It is NOT possible to install this with a stock bumper--EVEN IF YOU'RE WILLING TO CUT THE BUMPER. The mounts themselves are incompatible. Also, if there is any wraparound on your after-market bumper (as with my OR-Fab rear bumper), you will need to modify/cut that, as well.

      Noisey but it works

Pretty noisey going over 25 mph. Got so bad I took off the front most crossbar, a bit less noise, but now lacking a cross bar. Creaks alot while driving too, construction is pretty basic, but so is the price. Might be wise to experiment with some sort of faring on the front, or use a hard top only to cut down on the amount of wind noise and whistling.

      Barracade Roof Rack

Easy to install. Looks great, I get a lot of compliments. Biggest drawback is the very loud sound from the wind going between the soft top and the front bar of the roof rack, it’s so loud when driving over 30 mph that you can’t hear the radio or someone talking next to you. Trying to figure out a way to cut down the noise!

      Awesome Rack!

Fit easily, lots of extra parts (can be daunting). Modified some of them to make rear attachment stronger. Put front rain on backwards to reduce wind noise and have wiring holes protected (facing back). Makes fore a smoother installation of lights as well.

      Simple to do.

It was easy to install, there was a couple of thing that caused some work and thought. one of the cross bars did not fit very good, It seemed to long, but after checking all of the cross bars. They were all the same length. I am guessing it was a slight difference in the bolt up to the Jeep. I would recommend this rack system to any one.

Roof rack is solid. Some wind noise on the highway, but not excessive. Installation instructions are very poor. Items could be marked so they go on the right side. Overall I would order another one for my next jeep. Now to buy the kayaks.

It was quite simple to assemble. I jus need the help of one friend for a portion of the process. If you already have a wrangler you should not have a problem at all in assembling this even though the instructions are scarse. It cam well packaged.

      Pleased overall

We needed something to add extra storage for a long trip we were taking with our dog (we would have less interior storage with her in the back), so decided on a roof rack. Didn't end up using it for storage, but I assume it would hold anything well as it's very sturdy. It looks awesome on our Jeep, especially with our other aftermarket accessories. Took a bit of extra time to take off the front panels of the roof as we have to remove the luggage bar(s), but it wasn't a hassle or anything (not sure if it's possible to take the full roof off, haven't tried but I kind of assume no). The wind noise is pretty loud, but after spending a lot of time on highways, we got used to it - just turn up your speakers and eventually you won't even notice anymore. It's pretty squeaky and find we have to tighten the luggage bars often, but I just saw someone say they take out the luggage bars when not in use and that reduced the noise, so maybe that'll make a difference for us too. We had someone install it as we were on a time crunch and didn't have the space (and are in the middle of winter in Canada so didn't want to do it outside), so can't say how that went - though, it didn't take them very long and we didn't hear any complaints or issues. We also purchased an aftermarket bumper to avoid cutting into our original or the body, in case we sell in the future. All in all, pretty pleased with it and very happy with how good it looks.

Works well and I haven't seen any accessory that doesn't fit. Fells like it can hold more then 350lbs. Wind noise is not at all noticeable.

      DO NOT PURCHASE THIS RACK

After receiving my rack and correctly installing it, I the top crossbars seemed to be off a little bit. I later found out that the 3 crossbars are supposed to be 3 different lengths! All 3 were the same length shipped to me. I provided Extreme Terrain proof of this and was told that it was "too late" to do anything about it. The provided knobs to secure the crossbars are also easily stripped. If you want a quality rack that is backed by a quality company, look elsewhere.

      Great Overall Roof Rack

This was just what i was looking for! The rack is more then I could ask for the price. It will haul my kayaks and camping gear no problem, and make the jeep look very nice at the same time. Only complaint I have is there is no wind deflector made for this rack. I did eliminate 75 of the wind noise by wrapping a 3/8" rope around the front and second bars, evenly spaced about 4-6" apart. It looked so nice that I did it also to the back for that occasion that you jest need some rope.

Review from Barricade Roof Rack - Textured Black (07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK 2 Door)

      Worth the price, but.

Assembly went pretty smooth, despite the poor instructions (obviously was able to fill in the gaps, but should not have to) Product looks good and came with all required components. Did not know going in that it is a body mount if you do not have an aftermarket rear bumper (may one day get). A body mount was not an option I wanted to use, so I took the time to modify my factory bumper so the rear vertical supports go through the factory bumper. Now I have a nice clean look with frame mounted rack. I expected an increase in wind noise, but was still surprised at the level of noise that I heard (and felt) at just 50 kpm (30mph). I removed the luggage support bars (when not in use) and the noise was very substantialy reduced. I will put some effort into designing a luggage support system that has less noise. As a person with fabrication skills, I could not build my own rack for less then I payed for this product (especially labor). Worth the price.

      Perfect

This beast of a rack is super nice for the money, but... To start off this is the second/third barricade rack I’ve owned and couldn’t be happier. It’s a great item for the money. I have one on my 97TJ, had one on my 15JKU and just put one on my 17JKUR. The only down side with this rack is the wind noise. That is the only complaint that I have. The hard top makes the noise more bearable most definitely but with the soft top it’s quite loud. Other than that I can’t think of any other reason why you shouldn’t save the extra cash and get this rack

      Coolest Rack on the Road

This installation is a mall project, so allow an afternoon. The rear bumper, not the lame stock bumper, prevents me from mounting to the frame. I have to use the body mount on my Rubi. I had this rack on my Sahara 2-door and loved it. I will install on the Rubi shortly.

      Great rack for the price

End result, I really like the rack and think it is great for the price. Understand that the installation instructions are poorly but installation is simple. Also, I have an aftermarket bumper, XRC Atlas and it had to be cut/modified to mount the rack to the frame. Luckily, I'm a welder and a grinder made quick work of the bumper with very little loss to aesthetics. All in all I recommend it for all us Jeepers who want to have money for other stuff for your Jeep!
