    Review & Install Video

This is my review of the Barricade roof rack, fitting your four-door 2007 and up JK. JKs had notoriously small interiors and there isn't a lot of cargo space, so if you're somebody who wants to be able to haul more gear, a roof rack like this might be a nice option. This roof rack isn't going to be nearly expensive as some of the top roof racks on the market, however, it's also going to be a little less sleek-looking, and you won't be able to get quite as many accessories that bolt right onto it. If you're looking for one of those other racks, we do have Gobi and a few other brands on the site, but if you're looking for one of the less expensive racks that'll still get the job done, this is a good one to take a look at. This rack is built from 2-inch round tubing that is 0.12-inch wall thickness, so you're going to have enough strength to carry up to 350 pounds up on the rack. The whole thing is covered in a textured black powder coat finish, which will match a lot of other off-road accessories, and also your factory black plastic accents on your Jeep. The rack will mount to the windshield hinges in the front, and either to the frame or to the body in the rear, so there isn't any drilling necessary. If you have an aftermarket bumper, I would recommend using the frame mounts. If you have a factory bumper that you're not willing to chop up, you will have to use the body mounts, which do require some drilling into the body. Once you have the rack installed, you'll be able to raise and lower your soft top by just removing the crossbars of the rack. However, you will not be able to install and uninstall your hard top with the rack in place. Speaking of those removable crossbars, those are attached with large plastic thumbscrews, which make it very easy to remove and reinstall the crossbars, however, sometimes those thumbscrews like to strip out, so a lot of people have been replacing them with a stainless steel wingnut setup, which is going to be a lot stronger and hold up a lot better, but still not require the use of any tools to get the crossbars on and off. This roof rack installs onto your Jeep really easily. It's designed to be a bolt-on installation, unless you have a factory rear bumper that you're not wiling to cut up. In that case, you have to use the body mounts in the rear of the rack instead of the frame mounts, and they do require you to drill into the body. Those holes are going to be very visible if you were ever to remove the rack, so I definitely recommend using the frame mounts instead. If you have a factory rear bumper that you like, you can cut a hole in it or cut the ends off of it in order to use those frame mounts, and those of you with an aftermarket rear bumper won't have to worry about it. You'll be able to use those frame mounts and not drill the body without a problem. If you do end up using the body mounts, the installation becomes a little bit more difficult because of the drilling you have to do. To start this installation, you'll start at the front of the Jeep and remove the four bolts in the windshield hinge to allow you to mount these two plates up on the hinges. You'll start on one side, then put the crossbar across the front, which also has your light mount tabs on it, and finally move along to the other side of the windshield hinge. From there, you have the bars that move toward the back of the Jeep, and finally, the bars that attach to the back of the Jeep down to the mounts. At the same time that you're installing those, you'll install the crossbar across the back center of the Jeep, and finally the mounts, whether you're using the body mounts or the frame mounts. After you have everything installed, you can go through and tighten down all the bolts. As far as tools go for this installation, you won't need any specialty tools, however, you will need a good set of Torx bits, to remove the factory Torx bolts that are in your windshield hinge. As I mentioned before, this rack is toward the bottom of the price range as far as roof racks are concerned, and really, the only reason for that is, one, that this isn't as sleek and stylish-looking as some of the more expensive racks, but also, it doesn't have all of the bolt-on accessories available for some of the other more well-known racks on the market. For instance, the Gobi racks that we offer have everything from kayak and bike mounts to shovel and high-lift jack mounts. You could certainly get all of those accessories bolted onto this roof rack, however, they're going to require some modification and it's not going to be quite as simple. So, if you're looking for an inexpensive rack, you like the way that this one looks, and you don't need a lot of those bolt-on accessories, I would definitely recommend taking a look at this one. If you want a rack that's a little bit more sleek and stylish, and has a lot more easy-to-add accessory mounts, then we certainly have those options, as well, for a little bit more money. So, whether you have a two-door or four-door JK, and you're looking for a little bit of additional cargo space, a roof rack is a really nice option. Assuming you don't have any height restrictions, this rack will hold 350 pounds of additional cargo, and as long as you like the look, this rack will save you a lot of money over those top brands on the market. So, that's my review of the Barricade roof rack, fitting all 2007 and up JKs, that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.

Removable Cross Bars. Barricade Off-Road designed their roof rack with removable cross bars to allow for different size cargo loads and easy removal of either a soft or hard top without the need to disassemble the entire rack.

Application. The Barricade Off-Road Roof Rack System is specifically designed to fit the 2007-2018 4-Door Jeep Wrangler JKs only, does not fit 2-Door JK models. Weight capacity 350 lb.Please note that this Barricade Off-Road Roof Rack is

not designed for rollover protection. Bolt on application works in conjunction with aftermarket rear bumper.

What rear bumpers does Extreme Terrain sell that will allow this Barricade 07-17 Wrangler JK 2-Door Roof Rack to be mounted to the frame (no drill) *and* also allow a towing hitch to be mounted? Please provide some links.

    • Thank you for your question! The Barricade Roof Rack's bolt on application will work with any rear bumper that does not wrap around the sides of the Jeep. Like the: Body Armor 4x4 Rear Bumper (07-17 Wrangler JK) found here: http://www.extremeterrain.com/body-armor-rear-bumper-jk-jk2394.html. The Body Armor rear bumper allows the reuse of a factory style hitch.

I have a 2016 2 door rubicon, and the page says in one place that it "excludes rubicons" and in the "will it fit my vehicle" section it says it will. So why the contradiction, and what is different in body style of a rubicon vs a sport, as I have never heard of such a thing before.

    • I apologize for the confusion! This Barricade Roof Rack will not fit the 4-door Rubicon models due to being too short. However it will fit all 2-door JK models, including your 2016 2-door Rubicon!

Do you sell any roof racks that do NOT require drilling? I'm not real keen on drilling into the body of my new Jeep. I am correct that this one does require drilling, right?

    • This will indeed require drilling into the rubber bumper as described in greater detail and demonstrated here in the install guide: https://www.extremeterrain.com/barricade-roof-rack-black-jk-j100173-cust-install.html

Can you please clarify the modification needed to install the frame mount with a factory bumper. Can one cut, say, a 2 1/2" hole with a holesaw through the bumper and feed the pipe through it from inside out or must one cut off the rear corners of the bumper (there is no obvious place to do that). Do you have any photos of a frame mount with factory bumper? If I go to the optional side mount, is it secured to some internal frame member or just the sheet metal? Thank you.

    • Use of the Barricade Roof Rack with a stock bumper and the frame mount by cutting a hole in the bumper on each side, though this will need to be larger than the tube to allow you to feed the tube through the hole with its bends. The body mount will secure to a reinforced section of the body but does still attach to sheet metal.

would this roof rack fit with having a Smittybilt SRC Gen2 Rear Bumper rear?

    • Hello, although we haven't test fitted the Roof Rack with that bumper, from our experience, it seems that there will be enough room between the tube and the body to be able to run the support bar through there for the Rack.

Review from Barricade Roof Rack - Textured Black (07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK 2 Door)

      Almost really good

I bought the rack to carry my kayak. I am very happy with it exept that I had to loose my bumper to attach it like I wanted to. I now have to buy a new bumper, so the rack purchase has now turned into a domino affect. So far, that's the only downside.

      Two man job

The instructions were useless but I am happy with the install. I had to use ratchet straps to close the last part of the rails as once installed, it’s near impossible to move the rails.

So far it works well. Hauled a large canoe on it down the Interstate just last week. One caveat though, if you have oversize tires and thus a frame mounted spare tire carrier, you'll need to make a few minor adjustments to the mount on the rear passenger side. No big deal though. I did the install by myself, including adjustments, in 2 hours. With two persons you'll have it done in an hour.

      Did the trick!

The installation started off tricky as the vertical (body) install plates were not included in the packaging. (I contacted customer service and they asked for a picture to prove that I didn't have the pieces shipped to me. Huh?) I had to remove my bumper and purchase an after-market bumper. Keep in mind that the back section shares the same hardware and holes as your bumper. This makes it a bit of a puzzle once you get to the back of the Jeep. Overall, it did a great job! I am able to flip my soft top back as long as I move or remove the cross bars. I didn't have trouble with the knobs breaking, as other did. I bought wing nuts but didn't like the look so I used the knobs. I also used a piece of swimming foam tube to cushion between this rack and the cage I added, to help with noise. I installed this by myself (girl power), but could have easily hurt myself or my jeep had anything fallen while I was carefully puzzling the pieces together from front to back. Call a friend! Most friends will help for a couple of chilled beers.

      works great

Strong and sturdy, holds an impressive amount of weight. Down fall is the setup, it bolts to frame, so if you have a rear bumper that uses the frames outside bolt pattern you will have alignment issues.

Review from Barricade Roof Rack - Textured Black (07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK 2 Door)

      It’s...ok

Installation was kind of a nightmare due to the fact that the instructions are pretty terrible. It’s prettt crucial to ensure all parts are lined up properly otherwise you’ll be pulling pieces off and reassembling in a different order. If you have a stock bumper and aren’t comfortable drilling into the body, you will have to cut off a fair chunk of the rear bumper in order to install this into the frame of the jeep. If you can tolerate wind noise and it clanging against the jeep, this is a decent roof rack. I like it, I’ve just been fine tuning and tweaking for awhile now to get satisfied enough to be content driving with it on.

      Great Rack

High level of quality versus price. Very pleased. Impressed with extra hardware that was included - allowed me to keep using third party mirror relocation brackets. Would have given 5 stars, however directions are horrible. Had to start over at least three times and redo steps because the directions weren't clear. There were even parts that the instructions don't cover and things that you discover by common sense, after the fact. Very frustrating.

      good

There are no directions. If you have any mechanical inclination you'll be fine. Do not over tighten. I started to warp the metal by tightening down too much. if you live in the Midwest and your jeep is 3 years old. get a breaker bar for the jay-hook in the back, it got to the point I just grinded the bolts off.

      Love this rack!

I got this based on the many good reviews. It came quickly and all the parts were there. I did not want to cut or replace my bumper so I had a peg made at my work, cut the frame mounting tubes, and bolted it to the bumper. It's very solid and I don't hear any extra road noise. Live it!

Easier install than the Smittybilt version

Installed on our new 2-door. Instructions were missing a few steps, which we only realized because we recently installed the SB version on our unlimited. However, the install approach the Barricade was much smarter and much easier than the SB. Rack is very solid, with minimal wind noise (we don’t use the crossbars). Very happy with the purchase!

      Nice Rack

The install was fairly simple until time to put the last piece in. That took some time but finally got it in by taking out some of the windshield bolts. I mounted the rack to the frame and it is very sturdy. You can use it to grab and step up on the rear tire or bumper to have better access to whatever you are carrying. Doesn’t move at all. There is a good bit of wind noise with the soft top but I am getting used to it.
