    Review & Installation Video

    Review & Install Video

Hey, guys, it's Sara from extremeterrain.com. And today, we have a review and install of the Barricade roof rack in textured black, fitting your '07 through '18 Ford or Jeep Wrangler JK, but is also available for the two-door options. This roof rack provides your Jeep with extra cargo space, and has a weight capacity of 350 pounds, plus it has removable cross bars for complete customization.Coming in at around $450, this roof rack is towards the lower end price-wise, but if you're just looking to add some extra storage to your Jeep without breaking the bank, this will get the job done. I'm giving this install a two out of three wrenches on the difficulty meter. It can be done in approximately two hours, and does feature a direct bolt up installation. However, there is quite a bit of adjustability to get all the bars lined up, so I would grab a friend for this one. The front and rear bars also have tabs for the addition of lighting, and are interchangeable to accommodate most lighting options. All right. With that said, let's jump right into our install. For this install, we used an impact gun, ratchet, 18, 16, and 13-millimeter sockets, a swivel, a small extension, razor knife, T40 Torx, 5-millimeter Allen key, the included Allen key, and a 13-millimeter wrench. So, the first step of our install, we're going to remove the four bolts holding the side of the windshield in using a T40 Torx. Repeat that process on the other side. So, before we can bolt up the pieces that go to our windshield, we do wanna put these foam strips on them so it doesn't damage the paint. Peel back on the adhesive and stick it to the back of the plate so it'll bolt against your Jeep. So, you will need to trim this down in order to fit and not stick out past this bracket. So, flip this over, grab a razor knife, and trim the edge here, as well as into both of the bolt holes so you can get the bolts through. Repeat that process with the rest of these brackets. This one you'll have to trim a little bit farther back this way as well, because it does only mount to the body on this small plane.Using a straight edge or another piece of metal, don't forget to cut out your bolt holes. Repeat that set for your other bar. Now, we can install these onto the Jeep using the factory hardware. Grab your T40 Torx socket and tighten these down. So, before we can install our passenger side windshield bar, we do need to install this cross bar. They recommend putting a towel in place just so you don't scratch your windshield or your paint while you're doing this. Now, we can install our passenger side windshield bar, first putting it on the cross bar. Now, you can reinstall the factory hardware. So, before we tighten down the hardware on our passenger side window bar, we do wanna make sure that our Allen key hardware goes through these holes holding on your cross member. You may need to turn the bar a little bit to line it up, but once you do, and saw your washer and lock nut, grab a 5-millimeter Allen key and a 13-millimeter wrench and tighten this down. Grab your Allen head hardware and install it on the other side. Grab your 5-millimeter Allen key and 13-millimeter wrench and tighten this down. With our cross bar bolted in place, we can now tighten down our passenger side windshield bar.All right. So, when it comes to the back of your Jeep, you do have two options. If you have an aftermarket bumper like we do, it's very simple, you just pick this larger bracket and it bolts right to the side of your frame. Now, if you'd like to keep your factory bumper, you have two options, you can choose this bracket, which mounts to your body, but it does require drilling into the side of your Jeep, or you can choose to use this mounting position to your frame, but it does require cutting into your factory bumper. But we have an aftermarket bumper on our Jeep, so we're gonna go ahead and get this mounted. Using your 18-millimeter socket, remove these two bolts holding on your bumper. All right. So, if you have an aftermarket bumper that is on the outside of the frame here, you will need to use a spacer, but it's nice that they include that. Ours is on the outside, so let's put the spacer in position and get your hardware installed. Install the provided hardware into the mount on the bumper. Once these bolts are in, grab an 18-millimeter socket and tighten them down. You may also want an extension or a swivel extension for here. Now, you can tighten down the front two bolts with a 16-millimeter socket. Repeat those steps on the other side.Grab your plate, line it up with your bolt holes, and then line up our bracket. Grab the included hardware and thread it into the holes for the bumper. Grab your 18-millimeter socket and tighten these down. Grab a 16-millimeter socket and tighten these down.At this point, we can set our Y-bar in place onto the brackets that we just mounted, and then get our cross bars installed. Grab your cross bar and install it into the front section. So, this long bar is quite a tight fit. If for some reason it doesn't slide in nicely with just the play on this Y-bar, you can loosen up the bolts at your frame and windshield just a little bit to give it that little extra play so it slides into place. But with that said, let's hop over to our passenger side and our rear bar. Finally, we can install the rear bar. Once it's in place, grab your hardware. Once your hardware is installed, grab a 5-millimeter Allen key and a 13-millimeter wrench and tighten it down. Repeat that process with the rest of the hardware for the rest of our roof rack. With all of our bolts installed in the body of the roof rack, we can now install these cross bars.Line them up to each hole on each side of the roof rack, grab the long Allen hardware and the knob, and tighten it down. Use the included Allen key to hold the bolt head down while you turn the knob up top. Repeat that process with the rest of the cross bars. Now, you can repeat that process with the other side of the bars. So, now if you'd like, you can add these rubber caps the top of your knob, and if you're not gonna add a light bar right away, you also may wanna cap off the front of this bar.But that is gonna do it for the review and install of this roof rack. Remember, for all things Jeep, keep it at extremeterrain.com.

Do you sell any roof racks that do NOT require drilling? I'm not real keen on drilling into the body of my new Jeep. I am correct that this one does require drilling, right?

        • This will indeed require drilling into the rubber bumper as described in greater detail and demonstrated here in the install guide: https://www.extremeterrain.com/barricade-roof-rack-black-jk-j100173-cust-install.html

Can you please clarify the modification needed to install the frame mount with a factory bumper. Can one cut, say, a 2 1/2" hole with a holesaw through the bumper and feed the pipe through it from inside out or must one cut off the rear corners of the bumper (there is no obvious place to do that). Do you have any photos of a frame mount with factory bumper? If I go to the optional side mount, is it secured to some internal frame member or just the sheet metal? Thank you.

        • Use of the Barricade Roof Rack with a stock bumper and the frame mount by cutting a hole in the bumper on each side, though this will need to be larger than the tube to allow you to feed the tube through the hole with its bends. The body mount will secure to a reinforced section of the body but does still attach to sheet metal.

would this roof rack fit with having a Smittybilt SRC Gen2 Rear Bumper rear?

        • Hello, although we haven't test fitted the Roof Rack with that bumper, from our experience, it seems that there will be enough room between the tube and the body to be able to run the support bar through there for the Rack.

What rear bumpers does Extreme Terrain sell that will allow this Barricade 07-17 Wrangler JK 2-Door Roof Rack to be mounted to the frame (no drill) *and* also allow a towing hitch to be mounted? Please provide some links.

        • Thank you for your question! The Barricade Roof Rack's bolt on application will work with any rear bumper that does not wrap around the sides of the Jeep. Like the: Body Armor 4x4 Rear Bumper (07-17 Wrangler JK) found here: http://www.extremeterrain.com/body-armor-rear-bumper-jk-jk2394.html. The Body Armor rear bumper allows the reuse of a factory style hitch.

I have a 2016 2 door rubicon, and the page says in one place that it "excludes rubicons" and in the "will it fit my vehicle" section it says it will. So why the contradiction, and what is different in body style of a rubicon vs a sport, as I have never heard of such a thing before.

        • I apologize for the confusion! This Barricade Roof Rack will not fit the 4-door Rubicon models due to being too short. However it will fit all 2-door JK models, including your 2016 2-door Rubicon!

            Excellent Roof Rack

The fit was excellent. Although I had to ream out one of the two mounting holes on the back because I have an after market bumper and the mounting bolts were 2 different sizes for some reason.

Review from Barricade Roof Rack - Textured Black (07-18 Jeep Wrangler JK 2 Door)

            Very Functional

Great product for the price. Seems to be very stable and sturdy. Tends to creak and rattle a bit on the trail but I spot welded all the joints and all is quiet now. Have a RTT on it now and it holds it well, no complaints. When you install don't tighten up anything until all is assembled. That will help all the holes to line up easier for you. I was able to install without any assistance from anyone else.

            Decent product but affordable

I have full barricade products, front bumper, rear, winch, and side step armor. However, I think this product have way to many parts. I tired for little over 2 hours to make it perfect fit (flush). No luck, some holes Just do not sit right together. I give 3 stars, little disappointed honestly. I had no issue from barricade product so far and this product gets my lowest rating.

Roof rack 5 stars, directions negative 100000

Okay so the roof rack looks great. It look about 3 hours of install solely because the directions were TERRIBLE, or lack of directions I should say. The mini version they send you is awful, and the video is worse. So, if you have some time on your hands and you feel like figuring out how to mount this rack with the goodie bag of screws they give you, this rack is for you.

            paint chips.

sturdy, easy install...does what it's supposed to do. the ugly: paint chips off easy...just by looking at it, kidding aside horrible paint job, paint flakes off and rust sets in within a few weeks of use. Recommendation: I used TRUCK BEDLINER SPRAY in a can to give it a few coats to resist chipping and rust...this was time consuming. You get what you paid for.

            Perfect Starter Rack

Overall I’m happy with the outcome of the rack. It’s seems like it’s going to be pretty tough, the finish is really nice, and everything was wrapped and protected inside the boxes to prevent chipping etc. my rear factory steel bumper (75th anniversary edition) had to be trimmed which I expected, but I’m really happy with the look of my Jeep with the rack. My only complaint is that some of poles had too little or too finish on some of end pieces which cause some issues with inserting some of the male ends into the female ends, and there are spot from that which are shiny black metal showing instead of being textured.

Perfect two door wrangler roof rack!

I looked at many other roof racks online before making my choice on this one. I really love this rack. It is very sturdy. After I installed it with basket, I climbed atop and stood firmly to see it is strong. It has thick tubular construction and the only bad about it is the added weight. This kit includes two was to mount the rear side. I mounted directly to the frame of my Jeep which didn’t require any drilling. The rear posts allow for body lift kits if you have one or plan for one. I wanted an overhead roof rack that wouldn’t require any drilling, mounted directly to frame and would be sturdy. This product meets all of those qualities!

            Great Starter Roof Rack

For someone who’s never owned a roof rack, this is a fantastic starter at a great price. Additionally, it works really well for those with soft tops as the cross braces come out with ease. Only thing to mention is that the plastic screw handles are kind of junk. The nuts come out quite easily. Still, just a minor flaw on an otherwise amazing piece of equipment! Easily installed light bars on the front portion as well. Extremely happy with the purchase!

            Great upgrade, but....

Loved this purchase and how it looks. However, the instructions need a lot of work. This job took twice as long as it should have because I struggled so much deciphering how to put it together. To make matters worse, the instructions that came included with the product differed from what I found online.

Looks good. Feels strong and sturdy. I'm gonna like using it for hauling my kayak around now instead of strapping it to the roll cage. I highly recommend this rack for Wrangler owners, but....be sure and print the install instructions from the pdf on this site, the ones in the box may not be completely worthless, but they're in the same zip code.
