      Hey, guys. Adam here with extremeterrain.com, and today we're taking a closer look at and installing the Barricade X-Series Fender Flares with the LED DRL, Marker Lights, and Red Inserts, available for the 2018 and newer Wrangler. Now, you should be checking this out for your own Wrangler if you're looking to upgrade your factory boring, very traditional, and weak fender flares in favor for a set here that uses a more angular shape or geometric shape that has a durable stainless steel, a black powder coating, and some unique features like lighting invents. Now, these particular fender flares from Barricade are more unique in the category. They are a flat top there with a more geometric shape, like I said, so there's got a lot of angles and hard cuts as opposed to some of the more traditional fender flares that are a lot more rounded and bubbled.Now, this one takes it a little bit further, has a nice textured black powder coating on them to give it a corrosion and rust-resistant layer to make sure it can withstand all the weather elements. But in addition to that, it's got these red insert vents at the top-end that are actually bolted to the fender flare themselves. Now, those events up at the top here are gonna be really cool to give it that aerodynamic look, but it's really there for a nice aesthetic appeal that differentiates it from some of the other ones in the category.Now, aside from that, the front-end here also adds in some lighting. Now, as you know, your factory fender flares come with some LEDs inserted in there for your turn signals and parking lights. This one's gonna take that a step further. The LED lights are switchbacks at the front-end. Now, your factory ones are not. Now, the switchback basically means that it uses an LED DRL or daytime running light that's a pure white light, right around 6000K color temperature. To operate in conjunction with your headlights and your parking lights, they'll be white. And when you throw your turn signals and your hazards on, they'll switch over to a really bright and very vibrant amber to work with those features and then switch back to white when you turn them off. Now, that's a really cool thing that most headlights in the aftermarket world will actually incorporate. Not really something you see too often, if at all, on fender flares.In addition to that, it's also gonna add an LED accent light to the side in the form of just a little circle. Now, that's what you see on the side here. You can't really see the front LEDs or the DRL from the side profile of the vehicle. So it adds this nice amber accent light that'll operate with your parking lights and your hazards, but they're not gonna flash in conjunction with your turn signals and hazard lights. So parking lights and headlights, it'll work with, turn signals and hazards, it won't. But the front-end LED or DRL is definitely gonna work with those.Now, aside from that, price-wise, it's gonna come in right around 450 bucks for the set of 4. Now, in my opinion, that's a pretty worthwhile price for a really big visual and functional change on your Jeep. So the lighting's gonna be a lot more attractive and add some functionality there and, of course, the durability of the fender flares over the factory ones is worthwhile as well in addition to some of the additional tire coverage you get here for any larger wheels and tires that you might be putting on your Jeep, which obviously, as you can see, is what we have here so you get additional coverage there to keep it street-legal. Anytime you add larger wheels and tires to your Jeep that stick out past the factory fender flares, in some areas, it no longer is street legal, so having that additional tire coverage can go a long way.Install-wise, I'm gonna give this three out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter not because it's the most difficult install, but because there are a lot of steps that some people may not be comfortable with, but I'm gonna walk you through every step of it. You are gonna have to drill out a couple of the factory holes that are there to begin with. You've just got to make them a little bit bigger. I'm also gonna recommend picking up a rivnut tool, which I'll show you guys later on as well, because we have to put these rivnuts into those holes once we enlarge them. That's gonna put a threaded piece inside of the holes, that way we can bolt our fender flares down to new mounting points.Another thing to keep in mind, guys, this is no longer gonna work with your factory fender liners. So as you can see, we have them removed here because you would need to modify it, cut, and re-install the fender flares in a custom way in order to get them to work. Most customers would upgrade their interior fender liners to an aftermarket one. I know DV8 offers a really nice metal or stainless steel fender inserts there that'll work with these, your factory fender flares will no longer work without customization. Now, when it comes to that install, it's gonna take you about three hours from start to finish and knock out all four corners. What you see on this side, you will replicate on the other side, of course. So let's get started.Tools used in the install include an impact gun, a drill, 25/64 drill bit, 8-millimeter, 10-millimeter, and 13-millimeter deep sockets, 4-millimeter hex socket or Allen key, small extension, 1/4-inch ratchet, 10-millimeter and 13-millimeter wrenches, panel removal tool, snips, and a rivnut tool. First step here, of course, we have to get our factory fender flare out of the way, and I'm gonna start on our passenger side rear. And, of course, everything I do for this side, you'll just repeat on the other side, it's just mirrored. Now, the first thing we wanna do is grab a panel removal tool. We're gonna remove all of the one-time use push pin clips around this edge here. We'll be able to disconnect the fender flare and then remove our inner liner.All right. Next up, now that that's disconnected from the actual inner fender liner, what we can do is pull the tabs off of each corner just by going straight back. All right. So all those little clips are coming off there and then it looks like there are two more plastic clips holding it on each corner. So let's just pop those guys off. All right. So we're just going back with our panel tool into this corner. Pop this guy off. All right. Same thing on the opposite side. All right. So now we can just pull this guy off and set it aside. Next, we have to take our liner off. There are two clips up at the top and the rest are inside that we can get by hand, but let's get this guy off here with our panel tool. There's one. There's two. Now, on the inside, I'm just gonna grab and pull straight back. One, two, three, four, set this aside.So we got our factory passenger side to rear flare off and it's on the ground here next to our Barricade flare. And I wanna take you through some similarities and differences. And obviously, the first thing I wanna start with is construction. Your factory flares are the ABS plastic. They're matte or almost satin black with a textured finish, very OEM, very traditional Jeep flares, but the Barricade options here beef up the aggression and they offer capabilities. Now, these guys are made from a durable stainless steel with a black powder-coated finish on top, and that's stainless steel there is gonna be able to take a beating that your factory flares otherwise would not be able to. Anything that gets kicked up at these guys is definitely not gonna be able to take it in terms of the factory ones, but the stainless steel goes a long way.It also adds a few additional functionalities that the factory flares didn't offer. Now, at the top-end, there's some vents. So the vents there allow liquids to go through, it allows airflow to go through, and that just looks a lot cooler as well, especially because it's got a red powder-coated finish to it. It's sort of in-between an orange and a red. It's not really a deep, deep-red, or a blood-red. It's a little bit more lightened than that. It actually looks really good, especially against our orange Jeep here. Now, if you wanted to paint them, you can, because those events are removable. You can pull those mesh events out, take them to your local paint shop, have them custom-painted, and throw it right back in. Now, that's really something that's great for additional customization, but out of the box, they're red and they're already bolted to the flares themselves.Now, the back flares that we're working on here first don't have any additional lighting involved but the fronts do. The fronts not only replace your factory incandescent bulb with an LED, so it's gonna be a lot brighter, more vibrant, more attractive, but you also get an additional LED light that'll work in conjunction with your LED running lights or your parking lights that I'll show you guys later on in the video. But starting off here, what we're gonna do is toss our factory flare aside. We're gonna start by drilling out these additional holes here, adding our rivnuts, and then going forward from there.All right. So next up, we actually have to drill out a couple of our holes that our factory flare was clipped into. Now, I cleaned up the area a little bit just to make it look a little bit more presentable. Yours might be a little dirty. Cleaning it is optional. What you're gonna do next is basically take a 25/64 drill bit and we're just gonna open up a couple of these holes, eight to be exact. Now, I've already marked which eight you wanna drill out. You guys can take a look at what I'll be doing and mimic that on your own vehicle. Mimic the exact same holes so you don't have to drill out any more than eight. Eight is exactly what you'll be needing. So start here in the corner, we have one in the very corner here, one at the very corner over there, and then we are gonna skip one, one here, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight. And that's gonna be all eight of your guys. So 25/64 drill bit. Let's open these guys up. Now, a few of these holes are just completely hollow in the back, but a few of them actually go into the body of the vehicle. You don't wanna drill too deep to go into the vehicle. You just wanna drill just this surface out. We're only expanding this surface here, so you don't wanna go too far. All right. One. Two. Three. All right. So we're skipping the three at the top center and moving on to the other side here and just continue with the rest.Next up, I'm gonna use a rivnut tool to insert our rivnuts into the holes that we just drilled out. Now, you don't need a rivnut tool. There actually is a tool included in the kit that does the same job. It's just a little bit harder to use. This guy is a lot easier. You basically just thread the rivnut onto the end here and clamp it in and it'll stay into that hole, making it a riveted hole with the threading inside. Now, of course, you can use the tool included in the kit if you don't feel like picking this up, but again, it makes life easier, so I'm gonna use this guy. So we've got the rivnut inserted over the end there. I'm gonna go into this corner and then basically clamp it down just like that, open it back up, and unthread the tool from the rivnut. All right. And the rivnut stays in there. So that's exactly how this will work. If you're using the tool included in the kit, it's a similar process, but you'll probably need a ratchet or an open-end wrench or a box wrench or something like that to get that done. Again, this is easier. So I'm just gonna use this all the way around for each one of the ones that we drilled out.Now, this next part is specific to the rears. The rears are gonna come in contact with the body of the vehicle around this edge here. So what we're gonna use is this rubber, almost weatherstripping that's gonna prevent the metal on metal contact so it doesn't damage the body of your Jeep. So what you're gonna do is take this weatherstripping, I'm gonna start here at this corner. The bottom corner there doesn't really come in contact with the vehicle. So we wanna start there and then work our way straight across making sure it hugs that edge pretty tightly so then when we install it, this will rub up against the paint and not the metal. All right. Once you get down to the end, you can cut off the excess.All right. This next step is a little bit easier with a helping hand, but you're basically gonna get this guy up in a position on the vehicle and take the nuts included in the kit and tighten them down. All right. So we have one side held on. This side I'm holding on by hand. We have to drill out a new hole in this bottom corner. So I'm using a center punch now that we have everything else lined up to mark my hole in the bottom-left or the bottom-rear all the way toward the rear of the vehicle. All right. So you to have that marked, we can basically take the fender flare back off, drill that hole, rivnut it, and then we can finally install. All right. So now we can put our fender flare up and start bolting it down. All right. Once you have a couple holding it in, I recommend one in the middle, one on each end, you could fill everything else in and then tighten everything down. For the ones in the top center, you'll need to grab one of the nuts included in the kit, tighten down from the back. Once you like how this is aligned, go back and tighten all these down. All right. For this, I'm using a 4-millimeter hex socket.Moving onto the front. So the fronts are a little bit different. We have a couple of bolts we need to take out for the inner wheel well liner. It's 8 millimeters here, grab your 8-socket, and remove those too. Next up, we have a couple of 10 millimeters, so switch over your 10-socket and get those off. All right. We have one more back this way. All right. Next up, we're gonna pull out push pin clip on the inside here and pulling on that liner, pop that off. All right. Now we can disconnect it from the actual fender flare. Next step, we're gonna take my panel removal tool and we're gonna take off these one-time-use plastic rivets all along the inside here connecting the fender flare to the inner liner. All right. In the inner corner here, we have a couple of push clips we have to take off as well. So a little bit of a tighter space though. All right. Now we can pull the inner liner out. All right. Next up, we're just gonna disconnect this liner from the inside of the factory fender. All right. Set that guy aside.All right. Next, we have two 10-millimeter bolts holding on the factory flare right here and just a little bit up from there. All right. Doing the same thing we did before, just pulling this guy straight back. All right. All the clips come off. We have a couple that stayed on there, but we basically just now need to disconnect the harness here. So I'm gonna grab a flathead to pry open that locking tab. All right. Next, I'm gonna take my flathead and I'm just gonna push out on that red locking tab, pinch, and disconnect that harness. Here you go. Set your factory flare aside. All right. Now, for the front, we only have to drill out these two holes toward the back of the vehicle right where next to where that Jeep badge is. So we're gonna drill out these two to the 25/64 drill bit and then put the rivnuts in there. Remember, you're only drilling off the surface here, not going too deep in there.All right. Now we can pop the fender flare into place. All right. Next, we can just pick up that fender flare and drop it into place on those brackets and it should hold itself on. Now I'm gonna start by putting the bolts through the brackets here and then we'll go around the hardware through the open holes. Next up, you wanna take this bracket, set it on top of the bracket there. Take one of your 13-millimeter bolts, put that guy through, and tighten it down to the bracket you just installed. All right. Now, I'm gonna only tighten this stuff in by hand, and then we'll come back once all the hardware is in place. Do the same thing on the one to the left.All right. We have one more going in this corner here. I'm gonna drop the bolt in from the top this time and then put a nut on the bottom along with a couple of washers. All right. Let's go back and put the rest of the hardware in place and then we'll start tightening things down. All right. In the opposite corner, we can start putting our hardware through. The next couple of ones are a little bit more difficult. You might wanna grab your wrench, put the nut in that end of the wrench, feed that guy up through, and tighten it down to the nut from the outside. All right. Next, I'm gonna grab my 4-millimeter hex socket and my 10 wrench and tighten all this hardware down. Switch over to your 13 and tighten down the brackets. All right. For the one in the corner, you're gonna need a 13 wrench as well.Next up, we could just plug in our harness. So you wanna take these two small connectors, one has a yellow wire and one with a black, head up to the LED light in the front of the fender flare here and we're gonna plug in the yellow to the yellow wire and the black to the black. That's gonna be your power and your ground. All right. From there you can take this connector here and the other two really only fit to one connector. So the large one's gonna go all the way to the back here where the factory one was plugged in. All right. And then you wanna push that red locking tab down to lock it in place. All right. Now we can zip tie back all of these wires so that they're out of the way and it's not gonna pose a danger or a threat to the wheel turning. So we can go above the brackets, bring it back here, and zip tie it back. And additional zip ties are included in the kit if you wanted to get a fancier and zip tie anything else back but from here, you should be able to snip this excess off and you're good to go. And, of course, just repeat everything you did on this side on the opposite end.That's gonna wrap up my review and install for the Barricade X-Series Fender Flares with the LED DRL, Red Inserts, and Marker Lights, available for the '18 and newer Wrangler.
