      Video Review & Installation

Hey guys. It's Joe from ExtremeTerrain and in this video, we're gonna be going over the Barricade Trail Force HD Rear Bumper with Tire Carrier, fitting all '07 to '18 JKs. Now, this is gonna be a great option for you if you're looking for a new rear bumper that's not only going to bring form but function as well. And it's gonna come with a brand new spare tire carrier capable of running bigger tires and all at the same time at a budget-friendly price tag.So, first thing's first, let's dive into what this setup is made out of. And as you guys probably could have guessed, it's gonna be heavy-duty steel, definitely an upgrade from the factory plastic. This is heavy-duty 3/16-inch and 2.12-inch steel tubing finished in that awesome black powder coat which is not just there to add to the looks, but it'll serve as a layer of protection against the elements as well. Now, one of the biggest draws to this setup is gonna be this guy right here, the adjustable spare tire carrier. When you go with bigger wheels and tires on your Jeep that puts a lot of weight on these hinges right here. Something like this can help avoid any damage to the tailgate by relocating that to this swing arm that's connected with this post right here on to the rear bumper. This can accommodate up to a 35-inch tire. You can see we have a really nice deep cutout here for that right in the center. This is completely adjustable up top as well not only up and down, but forward and back. So, you could really dial in that backspacing and get that spare nice and tight up to the rear glass of the Jeep, and you get three lug nuts on top of it to just to tie the whole thing together. Now, one thing that I do have to mention here, it's gonna be the third brake light. You can see this has no accommodation for that whatsoever. So, if you do need to run that in accordance with your state laws, that is gonna have to be a custom job or you can pick up a relocation kit for that third brake light. Now, this bumper does give you the addition of a new recovery point as well. You can see we have two brand new D-ring mounts on there. There's two 3/4-inch D-rings included in this kit. Definitely, a really nice touch. Now, the next thing I wanna talk about is gonna be the 2-inch receiver on the bottom. First thing's first, that is not tow rated, do not expect to use that as a recovery point. That is more for accessories, cooler rack, bike racks, something like that, that is gonna be perfect for.Next up, let's talk a little bit about price. Simply put, this is gonna be one of the most budget-friendly combo kits we have on the site that's gonna include the spare tire carrier and the rear bumper, only looking about 650 bucks for this whole setup here which is really, really cost-effective. You're getting a lot of functionality for your money here and in my opinion, if you're looking to carry a bigger spare tire without affecting your tailgate, this guy is definitely gonna be well worth the money.Install, not gonna be bad either. Definitely gonna get one out of three wrenches on our difficulty meter. There are no modifications required. At most this should take you an hour or two. So without any further ado, let me show you what tools you'll need and how it's done.Tools you'll need for this install will include an impact, wrenches ranging from 16 millimeters all the way up to 19 millimeters as well as a 3/8-inch wrench, a ratchet, sockets ranging from 19 millimeters all the way down to 13 millimeters and a trim panel removal tool. We're gonna start this install by getting our factory spare tire carrier out of the way. In order to do that, obviously, remove the spare first then you can grab the trim panel removal tool, we're gonna disconnect our third brake light and the plug is behind this little plastic panel right here on the tailgate. We're gonna pry that out of the way to get access to it.So, what you're gonna be looking for is a plug like this. It's got a release tab on the back, press that down and separate the two. Now once they're apart, you reach in here there's gonna be a little rubber grommet. We're gonna push that through to get this wire out the back of the tailgate. Now we're free to disconnect the spare tire carrier. There's eight bolts that hold it on. We're gonna remove them all with 13-millimeter socket. Now, that we have that out of the way, you can take this little rubber plug that comes in the kit and we're just gonna fill that hole for the third brake light wiring. So, now, we can get started on our rear bumper. Now, inside the rear wheel well, this is on the frame rail, you can see two 16-millimeter bolts. That's basically what holds this bracket to the frame rail. We're gonna get those out of the way. There's two on both sides, and then we can remove the bumper as well. So, now that we have all of our factory stuff removed, I figured now would be the perfect time to pull in our new Barricade stuff and draw some comparisons between these two kits, what are the pros and what are the cons of each. First thing's first, let's talk a little bit about build quality. You guys all know what the factory stuff looks like, we have plastic, we have body color in the middle here, at least on the Sahara, we have more plastic for the spare tire carrier. You know exactly what this is. Our new Barricade, however, is gonna take durability and looks to the next level. We're going over to 3/16-inch steel plate that is gonna be much more durable than that factory plastic. It's got that nice black powder coating on there as well, which is gonna be a huge upgrade in the looks department, gonna give you that stealth fighter sort of off-road aggressive look, which I personally am really fond of. I think Barricade knocked it out of the park with this one. It's got some extra functionality too. You can see we do have a 2-inch receiver built into the bumper, that's a nice touch, and we got some recovery points with the D-ring mounts there. Again, definitely a huge upgrade over the factory stuff.Moving on to our spare tire carrier a lot of the same things carry over. We're going from plastic to 3/16-inch steel with that black powder coating on there, huge upgrade when it comes to durability and looks. One thing I do wanna mention, we are missing our third brake light, you could pick up a relocation kit for that, I spoke about that a little bit earlier, you guys know exactly how that's done. If you do wanna keep that third brake light feature, we have a ton of videos about that if you wanna check that out. Also, that spare tire carrier is gonna be on a swing arm which makes it a little bit easier to use. And it's completely adjustable, fits up to a 37-inch tire and a huge upgrade over the factory spare tire carrier if you ask me. So, without any further ado, we're gonna reach a new our hardware box here. We're gonna pull out the mounting brackets, get those sorted out onto our frame rails here, and then we can start to build this bumper and spare tire carrier on the Jeep. All right. So, these are the mounting brackets you're gonna look for in the kit. You can see that the threaded holes are sort of biased off to the top a little bit. So, you wanna have that inserted the right way to line up with these two holes right here. So, and now the threaded portions are right here. Once we have our bumper up there, it'll be really easy to get hardware in there. We're gonna do the same thing on the other side and then put the bumper up.Now, these are the two bolts you're gonna need to line up and get into the bracket on the other side, the threaded portion that we installed in the frame rail. This portion right here, this part of the bumper and our hardware on the end, 18 millimeters. We're going to align our bumper and then tighten those down. So, we do have some bolts to reinforce our receiver as well. They're these really, really long ones. We're gonna put a flat line on the end of the bulkhead, and then we're gonna slip that over the muffler and then that's gonna poke through this frame rail sort of crossmember bracket here and then come out above the receiver, at which point we can go ahead and throw at another flat washer, lock washer and nut on those and tighten down with an 18-millimeter socket. All right. So, now, we're gonna work on our swing arm. On the bumper you have this post right here, before you do anything with this I would hit this with a healthy dose of grease, make sure that nothing is gonna rust on you, then you can throw that plastic washer around at the bottom. What we're gonna do next is follow up with the arm itself. Then on top, what we're gonna do, another plastic washer, flat washer, throw the cap on there. Then we're gonna use the button head bolt, another flat washer and a lock washer to tighten that down. Then we're gonna use this 5-millimeter Allen key, comes in the kit with the bumper to tighten it down. Now to keep that post nice and greased, you get these little tiny baby Zerk fitting that threads in right at the top here and tightens down with a 3/8-inch wrench. Now, we can move to the other side. The next thing we're gonna work on is our handle. This is what you're gonna get, it's just gonna slide into the arm like that. And we can take these bolts right here, 16-millimeter on the bulkhead. They're thin ones, they're M10s, and on the back, we're gonna follow that up with a flat washer and a 17-millimeter nylock nut, it's gonna get the same hardware in the bottom position as well. So, now, we can actually work on what that handle is going to attach to. You have this bracket right here, pretty simple, going attach to these three holes right here. However, you do get some shims. Reason being is when you have a spare on the carrier arm, it can tend to flex down a little bit. If you have something really heavy, you might not need to use any of these at all. I can tell you ours with no weight on it whatsoever it looks like it's gonna line up at five. So, I'm gonna go ahead and drop five of them down, drop our bracket down, and we're gonna use the shorter M10 hardware to attach it. And just like the handle hardware, 60-millimeter socket. And underneath the bumper, I have a 17-millimeter wrench around the nut. Looking good right here, we're just gonna test it out, make sure it lines up correctly, these holes are slotted, you're probably gonna need to loosen them up again and make an adjustment. And of course, if you do have some weight, you'll probably end up removing some of those spacers but that should come in like so. And latch just like that. That looks perfect. So we're going to call that done and move on to the next thing.Next thing we're gonna do is our spare tire mounting bracket, sort of for the carrier. This is the female side, this is gonna go on first. One thing you do wanna make a quick note of, this welded on nut here, this is gonna face down and also you have plenty of adjustment on here. We're gonna go two down from the top, that's pretty much the factory position. So that is gonna go on right like so. Then what we're gonna use is the shorter M12 hardware to attach the bracket to the swing arm. And on the inside here, just following up with a flat washer and then a nylock nut. And we're gonna use 19-millimeter socket and wrench to tighten that down. Now, we're gonna use the last bit of hardware to secure the male portion of the spare tire mounting bracket to the other portion of the spare mounting bracket. We're gonna use the longer bolts for that, they can go in like so. Obviously, this is slotted. If you wanna measure the backspacing of your wheels and lock these in perfectly first go, you absolutely could, otherwise tighten down with 19-millimeter socket and wrench. Now, this guy right here is really the last piece of hardware in the kit. And what this is intended to do, go up through that welded on nut and basically correct any sag when you have the spare on here. Again, it's a little bit of extra weight. So running this up like that, and tightening it however much you need to could basically correct any droop from here. And then finally, the kit throws in some new lug nuts as well. That's gonna do it for me. It's also gonna do it for the Barricade Trail Force HD Rear Bumper with Tire Carrier, fitting all '07 to '18 JKs. As always, guys, thank you so much for watching. Keep it right here at ExtremeTerrain for all things Jeep.
