1976-1986 Jeep CJ7 Accessories & Parts
As the last and most advanced iteration of the CJ-series, the CJ7 Jeep debuted in 1976. Retaining much of the look of the CJ5 that came before it, the CJ7 offers the same open-air experience (removable doors and soft-top) but with a slightly more curvy bodylines. Both longer and wider than the CJ6, the CJ7 sits upon a stronger chassis consisting of two parallel c-channel rails which spread out at the rear to allow for the rear suspension components to be mounted further outboard. While not likely to be considered luxurious, the CJ7 did have a more comfortable interior with available leather bucket seats, tilting steering column and even a clock. Over the course of the generation, the CJ7 had a multitude of engine and transmission choices. The base engine was a 150 cubic inch (2.5L) 4-cylinder, initially produced by GM and then switching to AMC. The CJ7 used two AMC inline-six over the years and even a 5.0L V8 was available for a short period (between 1980 and 1981). In regards to off-road prowess, a part-time two-speed transfer case was standard equipment, with a Borg-Warner (changing to an NP219 in 1980) Quadra-Trac all-wheel drive system available as an option. Up until 1980, the CJ7 used a Dana 20 transfer case and was then upgraded to a Dana 300 for all models thereafter. In 1986, CJ7 Jeeps were upgraded to a Dana 44 rear axle but kept the lockable hub Dana 30 up front. Undoubtedly an icon, the CJ7 is a superb vehicle for restoration and modification.
