    Video Review & Installation

The Rugged Ridge XHD Front Bumper Kit with Stinger Bar and Standard Bumper Ends is for those of you with a 1987 to 2006 YJ or TJ that's looking for a front bumper that's not only going to change up the look of your Jeep, but also add a lot of functionality. This is going to be a pretty easy bumper to install. It is completely bolt on. We're gonna still go one out of three wrenches on it, but because this is a modular bumper kit, there are gonna be a few additional steps over some of the other bumpers on the market. But don't worry, we are gonna show you how to get that done in just a second. So the Rugged Ridge XHD bumper kit is going to be a modular bumper. So what you're going to get is this center section that can be used as a bumper all by itself, and then a separate box that's going to have your standard bumper ends and your Stinger bar in it. Now, you can get other bars for the top, you can get other ends, you can mix and match. You can change up your Jeep as your build progresses as the way you use your Jeep changes, or you can just really get the exact custom bumper that you want instead of buying something off the shelf. Now, for the flexibility of having a modular bumper, you are going to generally pay a little bit more money. So if you were to just find a bumper that has a winch mount, a Stinger bar, a couple of D-ring mounts and is full-width, you could probably find something off the shelf for a little bit less money than this kit here, which is essentially going to give you the same thing. But again, if you're gonna take advantage of the fact that you can change this as your build grows, and that you can really get something custom, then it's probably worth a little bit of additional cost.So when we have this bumper side by side with our factory bumper, we'll go through some of the differences and similarities, but what this is going to add is the winch mount in the center, the D-ring mounts here, this Stinger bar up here, which, in this case is more of an aesthetic mod than anything else, and you're also going to get a full-width front bumper, so you're going to have good protection from the bumper. So it is really an all-inclusive piece. This is going to come in at right around $400 for the whole kit, which, like I said, is gonna be a little bit more than an off-the-shelf bumper, but if you're gonna take advantage of the fact that this is modular and change things up down the line, you're going to save in the long run by only having to buy one bumper and then maybe new ends a little bit later instead of having to buy a bumper now and a bumper later. So like we said, still getting a one out of three wrenches on this, even though there are a couple more steps to the install. Let's show you how to get it done. For this installation, we used a 10-millimeter, 13-millimeter, 15-millimeter, 18-millimeter and 19-millimeter socket, along with a 6-inch 3/8 extension, and our 3/8 electric impact. However, if you have factory hardware on your factory bumper, you'll also need some Torx sockets. So like I said, this is gonna be a very simple one out of three wrench installation. Of course, the first step is going to be removing our factory bumper. Now, we have hardware in all of the factory holes, but we don't have factory hardware on our TJ. This thing has been through a lot, had a lot of bumpers put on and taken back off again. But the process is going to be pretty much the same for you. You're just going to have some Torx head bolts here where I have hex head bolts. So there are gonna be two bolts that go through the bumper into the top of the frame rail, and one that goes into the bottom of the frame rail, and that's on either side, for a total of six bolts. Once those six bolts are removed, you can simply grab the bumper and pull it off the Jeep. All those bolts are removed, so we'll set the bumper aside. Once we're gonna remove these two small bolts from the sway bar cover on both sides and get this cover removed from the Jeep. Now we can take off that sway bar cover. Now it's time to get the winch plate installed on the Jeep. Now, we're not going to be installing a winch on our winch bumper at this point, but if you were, this would be the time you want to bolt that winch onto the winch plate. Otherwise, you're not gonna be able to get to the mounting hardware very easily because of the crossmember that's on the Jeep. So we're just going to hoist our winch plate on there and use a combination of the factory bumper bolts and our sway bar bolts to get it bolted in right from the top. Once we have all of our hardware started, we'll tighten it down. Now we can get our bumper set over top of our winch plate, and we're gonna use our two factory bumper bolts to hold it in from the bottom side. That way, we can get our Stinger installed and get the rest of the bolts installed after that. Now it's time to install the Stinger onto the bumper, and it's going to attach with four bolts on the top on either side, and four bolts on the front on either side. Now, these front bolts, they're gonna be much larger because they don't just hold the Stinger in place, they also hold your D-ring mounts, and they bolt directly through to your winch mount, so there's a lot of strength there. These top ones, they're a little bit lighter weight. So, we're gonna get everything hoisted into place, get all of the bolts started by hand, and then go back and tighten them down.So we have your factory bumper side by side with the new Rugged Ridge bumper. You can see there are not a lot of similarities. This bumper, especially having these high clearance ends on them, is going to pretty much give you full coverage, but where the factory bumper has plastic ends on it, these are going to be steel, so a little bit more protection there. The factory bumper, very plain, very simple all the way across, not a lot going on there, where this bumper is going to have a built-in winch mount in the center. It's also going to have the Stinger up front here, and also a couple of D-ring mounts. So the D-ring mounts are gonna give you a great spot for those tow strap or snatch strap recoveries, the winch is going to, of course, give you a lot of options for recoveries as well. And the Stinger, while in this case is probably more of a visual thing than anything else, is going to give you a little bit more protection by pushing some brush away from the front of the vehicle, and it has this bar up here, which gives you a spot to store your winch hook when you're not using it. So, pretty drastic difference in look and in function between your new bumper and that factory one.So if you're looking for a modular front bumper that's going to give you exactly what you want now and the ability to change up the bumper later, I would recommend taking a look at this option from Rugged Ridge, and you can find it right here at
