Review & Install Video
I'm Ryan from extremeterrain.com, and this is my review of the Olympic 4x4 Quick N Easy rack, fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs. There's a version of this available for both the two-door and the four-door JK. I recommend this rack system for those of you who want to be able to carry larger items on top of your JK only when the top is down, and don't want a more permanent larger roof rack solution.
I think that these are good if you want to be able to put accessories on them, because if you don't want to be able to put accessories on them all you need to do is take the top-down off of your Jeep, protect the top of your windshield frame, and you can lay items directly on top of the Jeep without bars like this. However, if you're looking to add some accessories, or you like the option of having bars like this to put things onto, instead of just putting them on the roll bar and the windshield frame, then this is a really fairly priced option.
This rack is made of inch-and-a-half thick-wall tubing that's covered in a textured black powder coat, and it comes with all of the mounting brackets and everything else that you need to get it installed on a Jeep. The bars are about 55 inches long, and you can carry a fairly large load, although Olympic doesn't give us an exact weight capacity for this rack. Now it's very important to note that you can't have this installed with a soft-top or a hard-top, and if you're somebody who has a soft-top on your Jeep and normally leaves the door surrounds in place, you'll also have to remove those door surrounds in order to get this rack on the Jeep.
Now the nice thing about this system is that it's designed to clamp on your sport cage so you don't have to drill anything, or make any permanent modifications, and it'll install and uninstall pretty easily. So to get this installed on the Jeep, all you need to do is remove your top, whether it's a hard-top or a soft-top, and if you have a soft-top also remove those door surrounds, and then you can install these brackets onto the sport cage.
There is a second half of this bracket that you'll bolt loosely onto this top-half, then sandwich it over the sport cage where there is a break in the sport cage padding. Add the second bolt, and then move onto the next one. Once all four of these brackets are in place, you can then feed the cross bars through them and use a set screw to hold them in place. Once the bars are positioned you can tighten down the hardware that hold the brackets themselves in place, and add the plastic end-caps onto the bars.
The whole installation process shouldn't take you more than an hour the first time. The second time should go quicker, because you'll already have half of these brackets put together. You won't need any specialty tools to get this job done, but there are some Allen key set screws, so you'll need a set of Allen keys and a socket set. I do think that this set-up is fairly priced for what it is. It seems well-engineered, it's well put-together, and it definitely gets the job done, all at a price that, again, I think is pretty fair.
However, if I'm somebody who is only every once in a while storing something large, or carrying something large, up on top of the Jeep, and only when the top is down, I personally would just add some protection to the top of the windshield frame and lay it right across the sport cage and the windshield frame. If I'm getting something like a bike rack or some other accessory that will attach to these bars, then this a really good option.
So, if you want to be able to carry larger items on the top of the Jeep only when the top is down and you don't like the idea of laying things directly on the windshield frame and the sport cage, this is a nice option for you. It's a really easy installation that comes on and off pretty quickly, but you can only run it when you don't have a top installed. So that's my review of the Olympic 4x4 Quick N Easy rack fitting all 2007 to 2016 JKs, that you can find right here at extremeterrain.com.
