Jake: Jake here for ExtremeTerrain. And today I'm taking a look at the Bilstein B8 5100 Series Steering Damper, fitting 2007 to 2018 Jeep Wrangler JKs. If you're hitting the trails, fitting larger wheels and tires, or just find your steering wheel to be a bit lax in its movements, an upgraded steering stabilizer is going to make a world of difference for you. This one from Bilstein brings their signature suspension technology to the table along with an affordable price to make a big difference in how your JK handles rough terrain or even just out on the street.Steering dampers, like other components in your front end, can wear over time. If you're adding larger wheels and tires, a lift, or even just going out and hitting the trails regularly, your stock stabilizer is soon going to prove inadequate if it's not already. Enter the Bilstein B8 5100. Like the popular shock absorbers of the same model name, this is going to bring you improved damping and much more control over your steering versus stock. Now, this looks like a typical shock absorber, and it functions like one, too. And as such, a lot of the same principles of damping and rebound apply here. Now, inside, this features Bilstein's patented digressive valving technology. Now, it allows it to react almost immediately to impacts and sharp movements, so that strong jerk you might feel hitting a larger obstacle out on the trail isn't going to yank the wheel the same way as it would with the stock damper installed. It's going to provide you with much more stable behavior out on the trail or on the street. Now, the damping and rebound here is much more controlled, making for predictable steering behavior and better feedback. It's also going to dampen minute movements and vibrations much better than your factory unit. And the gas-charged monotube design, along with that digressive valve technology, is going to be great at resisting cavitation or bubbling of the fluid, meaning that it's going to be a much smoother experience overall, especially if you're working it hard. Now, smoother action means more comfort and control for you behind the wheel, too, which, whether you're on the street or the trail, is a huge benefit. Bilstein also tunes each damper for specific applications, so you can rest assured that this is designed from the get-go to work with your JK steering properly.Construction, as is the usual for Bilstein's offerings, is also excellent. The body of the damper is 36 millimeters in diameter, and it's zinc-coated for durability and good looks. In fact, it's almost a shame that you won't see it very much once it's on the truck. And inside, you get a chromed and hardened piston rod with that self-adjusting disc valve we were talking about earlier. You also get new vulcanized neoprene rubber bushings at both ends to further dampen any unwanted vibration or harshness. And it's a bolt-on replacement for your stock unit as well, so as it comes out of the box, it's pretty much ready to go on. Bilstein also backs all their products up with a lifetime warranty against defects, and I can tell you from experience, they're really good about honoring that. Just make sure you save your receipt.Pricing comes in at about $150, making this one of the more affordable options in the category. Now while it doesn't have the adjustment or remote reservoirs of some of the more expensive options, it is going to be a great upgrade for a JK that sees mixed street and off-road use, or one that has some other mods done to it already. And for the difference that it can make in the driving experience, it is well worth the cost of entry, even if you're just using it out on the street.Installation is gonna get a 2 out of 3 on our difficulty meter, but it should only take you about 30 minutes to complete. Now, again, this is a totally bolt-on setup. You don't need to do any modifications, and it's gonna directly replace your stock stabilizer. Not much more we can say about it here. So with that, let's head out to the shop, and we'll walk you through the process step-by-step.Male: For this install you will need an impact, a ratchet, 18-millimeter socket, and an 18-millimeter wrench. What's up, guys? Today we're going to be installing a new steering damper on our Jeep, so let's get started. So we're going to start by removing the 18-millimeter bolt holding it onto the differential side, and then the 18-millimeter nut holding it onto our tie rod mount. So we'll grab our 18-millimeter socket on our ratchet, and go ahead and pop this side off first. And this has a flag nut on the back side so you won't need a wrench for that. Go ahead. Crack that loose. Once that's loose, should just be able to run that out by hand. I'm gonna tighten a few spots here. Now if you do need some extra leverage, once you have it a certain way out, you won't be able to get really a ratchet in here behind your tie rod, so you'll have to switch out to an 18-millimeter wrench. We'll go ahead and get that going again.Take our flag nut out of the backside. Go ahead and pop our bolt out. So you may need to go ahead and rotate your tie rod up just a bit like this, and then that will allow your bolt to come out, then we can go ahead and disconnect the other side. Now, if this one seems a bit stubborn, you can go ahead and switch out to an 18-millimeter socket on your impact. Go ahead and pop this off. Then slide your damper right off. Now we're gonna go ahead and get our new one mounted, and that's gonna go right onto our factory mounting stud here. We'll go ahead and loosely reinstall our 18-millimeter nut here. So then we'll go ahead and grab our other end, and what we're going to do is get it kind of lined up with our mounting point, and then we're going to go ahead and compress it, enough to get our mounting bolt in. Go ahead and get that through. Then we'll go ahead and reattach our flag nut. Grab our 18-millimeter socket on our ratchet again, go ahead and tighten this back down. Now, we'll go ahead and tighten down our mounting nut on our factory bracket here.Jake: That's gonna wrap it up here for our review and install of the Bilstein B8 5100 Series Steering Damper, fitting 2007 to 2018 Jeep Wrangler JKs. Thanks so much for watching. And as always, for all things Jeep, be sure to keep it right here at extremeterrain.com.
